- Description
- 'In this report, authors present an overview of the information provided to workers in the project countries .and the extent to which they make use of it. The first way in which women can get answers to their questions is by visiting the information that is provided on the websites, as over 6 million people from these 12 countries did in the last year. Authors firstly describe the information that is provided for free through the WageIndicator websites. Then authors analyse the relative frequency at which the different topics are being consulted by web visitors, by studying the 11 million page views that the websites got between May 2014 and May 2015. .The second way that workers can address the Labour Rights for Women project for answers is through direct contact with the local teams. In the second part of this report, authors relate the experiences of local team members, who answer questions sent via email or posed in meetings and work place visits. Together, these two analyses provide a picture of the issues that women workers in the twelve countries deal with and the problems they attempt to solve.'

- 'This paper presents an overview of the E ROTICS (Exploratory Research on Sexuality and the Internet) research project and draws out some of the emerging issues that are threaded between the five country papers from Brazil, India, Lebanon, South Africa and the United States, with an aim to stimulate further research and discussion. The first section summarises the overall goal, approach and methodological issues of the research. The second and third sections look at the current landscape of sexual and internet rights, and the value of the internet in the exercise of rights by people of diverse sexualities that were surfaced in the country research. The fourth section outlines the different forms of challenges, threats and restrictions to the free flow of information and engagement online that emerged, and the key actors involved. The final section raises aspects that are missing from the debates, with recommendations for further research and ways forward.

- Description
- ‘Good governance’ became the mantra in international development debates in the 1990s with state reform and ‘improving’ public administration epitomising key approaches to achieving good governance. But were these approaches sufficient to make governance participatory, accountable and responsive to citizens and respectful of their rights? .In contrast to dominant views of governance as a series of technical interventions to improve state functioning, this book looks at governance as political process. It investigates how women among marginalised groups can stake their claim to participation in governance, and create accountability of governance institutions to their interests and rights. .The book is based on action research undertaken in eight country contexts across two regions, Southern Africa and South Asia, by sixteen civil society organisations. It provides insights into the changing role of civil society organisations representing women’s interests in facilitating ‘voice’ of the most marginalised women, and in developing strategies, methods and tools to bring poor women’s voices to governance institutions in order to ensure responsiveness in policy formulation and implementation.

- A close analysis of current policy and practice shows that organizations providing improved water supplies to poor communities typically neglect the gendered nature of access to and control over water resources. The resulting gender bias causes inefficiencies and injustices in water provision and reduces the effectiveness of well-meant efforts. This book shows how in different environmental, historical and cultural contexts gender has been an important element in water provision. It draws on a wide range of material, analyzed from different disciplinary perspectives. Case studies include analysis of the role of water in inhibiting the fight against HIV/AIDS in southern Africa and the challenges of taking gender into account in large water projects in India and Nepal.

- Description
- The Nordic countries have long been seen as pioneers in promoting gender equality. The book brings together scholars from the global South and post-socialist economies to reflect on Nordic approaches to gender equality. The contributors to the book seek to explore from a comparative perspective the vision, values, policies, mechanisms, coalitions of interests and political processes that help to explain Nordic achievements on gender equality. While some contributors explore the Nordic experience through the prism of their own realities, others explore their own realities through the Nordic prism.

- This paper focuses on the following three key questions: • To what extent, and under what conditions, have women in highly unequal societies managed to overcome differences of race, class and geographic location to create effective constituencies for pushing through welfare measures and other gender-sensitive policies that meet the needs of low-income women? • What constellation of political actors (political parties, states, civil society and social/women’s movements) and forces have been most effective in representing and aggregating women’s diverse interests and bringing them into the policy arena? • What are the different constraints across contexts impeding cross-class/race coalitions of women and the translation of their common gender interests into policies? Examined in some detail are India and South Africa. Paper Political Studies, University of the Witwatersrand.

Focusing on the Andean region, Virginia Vargas-Valente looks at the scope for improving women’s participation in municipal budget processes. She discusses the potential of local budgets to bring about .greater transparency and accountability in local government and some of the obstacles to achieving this, such as lack of timely and relevant information, especially sex-disaggregated statistics: and lopsided decentralization processes, which decentralize administration of services, but not power and resources. - Description
- By analyzing the relationship between lesbian and gay movements and the state, this book addresses two interconnected issues: to what extent is the lesbian and gay movement influenced by the state and, to a lesser extent, whether the lesbian and gay movement has somehow influenced the state, for instance by altering forms of sexual regulation. Given the diversity in national trajectories, this book covers fifteen countries. This enables the volume to shed light on different kinds of relationships between these groups and the state, as well as on the way they have evolved in recent decades.

- Description
- Collection of twelve essays from feminist historians from around the world to look at how women have always found ways to challenge or fight inequalities and hierarchies as individuals, in international women’s organizations, as political leaders, and in global forums such as the United Nations. The chapters in part two focus on the variety of women’s activism and explore women’s activism in different national and political contexts. And part three explores the changing relationships and inequalities among women. - Description
- Gender and development theory and analysis is replete with implicit assumptions that women's entry into the world of paid work will positively affect their status both in the household and in the public sphere. Until recently the debate on global factories and export production has remained focused on women's individual experience of export employment- and the extent to which this represents a positive opportunity or gross exploitation. In spite of the extended discussion of rights and citizenship in the global economy, little attention has hitherto been paid to the implications for women's entitlements arising out of their pivotal role in export sectors. Whilst many assume that women's visible and crucial presence in key economic sectors will be reflected in the ways in which social policies are formulated, there has been up to now little empirical and analytical engagement with this question. This volume, bringing together detailed commissioned studies from six developing countries, aims to fill this gap.
