- Description
- By the mid 1990s, most western states, responding to the challenge of women's movements, had developed 'state feminism': institutions and policy measures to achieve gender equality. These developments have since been challenged by major political changes over the last decade, such as the increasing importance of the European Union and the United Nations, regionalization and decentralization, reforms of the welfare state and government and the introduction of gender mainstreaming. Women's policy institutions were also confronted with increasing diversity amongst women and amongst women's movements. This book analyses how these institutions in twelve western democracies have responded to the changes: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United States. Were they able to maintain or enhance their roles or were they downsized? What was their relationship with women's movements groups? And why did some fare well and others lose out over the last decade?

- Offering a perspective on the constitutional text and record of multiple jurisdictions, from long-established to newly emerging democracies this book portrays a profound shift in our understanding of what constitutions stand for and what they do. Its central insight is that democratic constitutions must serve the needs and aspirations of all the people, and constitutional legitimacy requires opportunities for participation in both the fashioning and functioning of a country's constitution.

- This book contests the idea that Europe developed within clear-cut geographical boundaries. It examines how experiences of colonialism and imperialism continue to be constitutive of the European space and of the very idea of Europe. By approaching Europe as a complex political space, the chapters investigate topical concerns around its politics of inclusion and exclusion towards migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, as well as its take on internal conflicts, transitions and cosmopolitan imaginaries.

- This collection provides a theoretical approach to the study of how global norms influence social processes. It analyses the institutional and political processes whereby actors – be they local, national, regional or trans-national – engage with global norms of gender equality. Authors look at how context and history effect norm engagement and how particular groups and actors tend to be marginalised from discussions of global norms.

- Gender has traditionally proven to be a 'blind spot' for new institutionalists. This book emphasizes gender as a critical aspect of institutions and opens up new avenues to interrogate the dynamics of power and change. Focussing on the EU, where institutional efforts to realize gender equality are quite pronounced, the book interrogates attempts to bring about more 'gender just' states - supranationally, nationally, and more locally. The book takes a 'best case' scenario in order to illuminate how institutions and their gendering, help and hinder institutional change.

- Research on the diffusion of gender equality norms in and between the EU, South America and Southern Africa, especially the trajectories of norms on gender-based violence and gender mainstreaming of aid and trade. The authors explore the constant renegotiation of gender equality norms in the dynamics between transnational, national and (inter)regional actor constellations. They describe differences in the strengths of gender equality norms and differences between four regional institutions: the EU, Mercosur, Organization of American States (OAS) and Southern African Development Community (SADC).

- What international family law is ‘necessary for the proper functioning of the internal market’? An analysis of international family law within the European Union from a multidisciplinary approach was needed to tackle this central theme. Articles 61c and 65 of the EC Treaty expressly place civil judicial cooperation in the perspective of the proper functioning of the internal market and thus appear to grant it a distinct ‘economic’ flavour. Still, the link between civil cooperation and family law on the one hand and economic integration on the other hand, is not self-evident. A key question today is to what extent and according to what framework the European legislator can and should act in the field of international family law.

- Although European policy initiatives to advance the position of women in Academia have proliferated, both at national and EU levels, serious inequities of many kinds remain. This situation is exposed and investigated in this book, which presents reports and discussions from a conference held at the Law Faculty of Lund University in December 2004. The participants law professors and social scientists present detailed reports on domestic experiences and regulations in eight European countries Among the many issues raised are the following: positive action in theory and practice: the progress of the EU Commission s strategy to integrate equal opportunity into all Community policies and activities: the motives for promoting women in Academia: the extensive group of part-timers and fixed-term employees at the margin of the traditional academic career: the importance of creating a situation in Academia where woman excellence shows: and the development of marketable research disciplines embodied in private research institutes.

- Description
- This book looks at the experiences of women across Europe from 1945 to the present day. Europe at the end of World War II was a sorry testimony to the human condition: awash in corpses, the infrastructure devastated, food and fuel in such short supply. The vast majority of citizens on whom survival depended, in the postwar years, were women. This book charts the involvement of women in postwar reconstruction through the Cold War and post Cold-War years with chapters on the economic, social, and political dynamism that characterized Europe from the 1950s onwards. The case studies show difference and diversity across Europe whilst also setting the experience of women in a particular country within the broader historical issues and trends, in such topics as work, professionalization, sexuality, consumerism, migration, and activism. The introduction and conclusion provide an overview that integrates the chapters into the more general history of this important period.

- Providing interdisciplinary and empirically grounded insights into the issues surrounding gender and migration into and within Europe, this work presents a comprehensive and critical overview of the historical, legal, policy and cultural framework underpinning different types of European migration. Analysing the impact of migration on women's careers, the impact of migration on family life and gender perspectives on forced migration, the authors also examine the consequences of EU enlargement for women's migration opportunities and practices, as well as the impact of new regulatory mechanisms at EU level in addressing issues of forced migration and cross-national family breakdown. The book also offers new insight into the issue of skilled migration and the gendering of previously male-dominated sectors of the labour market.

- In Scandinavia, women's law was established as a distinct legal discipline in university teaching and legal scholarship in the mid 1970s. Scandinavian women's law has been mainstreamed into the general development of European law on gender equality and discrimination. Scandinavian women's law - as developed through the last 40 years - and EU gender equality law are thus contemporaries. Because of the direct effect and supremacy of EU law over national law, the interplay between elements of law stemming from the EU-level and from the national level has been particularly important in the Nordic EU-Member States - Denmark, Sweden and Finland (Norway is not a Member).

- Description
- This book examines the life and work of women who have reached positions of political power after the end of communism in Europe. It explores the roles they have adopted, the relationships they have cultivated, and the agendas they have pursued. This volume treats the issues comparatively, in six countries -- the Czech Republic, Germany (with a focus on the former GDR), Slovenia, Bulgaria, Poland, and Russia. It also includes interviews with and written statements by the very 'women in power' discussed in the first half of the book, giving voice to their common and divergent experiences as political actors within an environment of stormy economies and new foreign engagements, particularly with the European Union.

- The authors in this book look at differences in fe/male life courses. Why are they different? What is good, bad, or best for women under these or probable future circumstances? This explores the difficulties women face in working life and retirement - and asks what can be done to achieve more gender equality for women and men alike. Pension experts from across Europe analyse the basic challenges through single and comparative country studies. The editors provide facts and figures on women's lives, work and pensions and draw theoretical lessons and practical policy conclusions from the studies and gendered statistical indicators.

- The book addresses the challenges faced by women on the two shores of the Mediterranean. While in the European Union’s Mediterranean countries inequality is mostly linked to the social sphere and in particular refers to labour market dynamics, in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) area the social and private spheres are blended and cultural and religious factors have a great impact on women autonomy and opportunities beyond the family perimeter. The chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue of the Journal of the Balkans and Near Eastern Studies.

- This book explores the discursive constructions of gender equality and the implications of these understandings in a broad range of policy fields. Using gender equality as a prime example the authors offer a new vocabulary to identify and study processes of the reduction, amplification, shifting or freezing of meaning. The main aim of the book is to understand the dynamics and to reflect on the consequences of such discursive politics in recent policy making on gender equality. It explores both the potential opportunities that are opened up for the promotion of equality through discursive politics, and the limitations they impose. Different chapters cover a range of case studies in Europe, the USA, and the Asia region, tackling contemporary political debates on equality .

- Description
- This book is a comparative study of family change, parental employment and social policy in the five Nordic countries, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom. In all these countries family forms have been profoundly affected by lower fertility rates, lower marriage rates, increased cohabitation, higher risks of relationship breakdown and episodes of lone parenthood. These changes have also been linked to an increase in the proportion of mothers participating in the labor market. .The contributors to this book trace these social trends over the last twenty years and analyze how social policy has developed and evolved in response. They argue that while the Nordic countries pioneered efforts to recognize new family forms and reconcile work and family life, there is still considerable variation between them as well as some evidence that the non-Nordic countries are catching up.

- In promising women equal citizenship rights and promoting gender equality, Turkey's recent welfare reforms appear to address fundamental problems-the patriarchal system limits women's lives to their roles as wives and mothers, and their labor to informal and unskilled sectors. Yet these policies, guided by the process of accession to the European Union, have conflicting outcomes for women. The reforms sweep away historic support structures and deem women 'equal citizens' without adequate interventions in legal and social frameworks, thus increasing their vulnerability. The AKP's neo-liberal policies and rising Islamic movements further weaken the reform process.

- This volume assesses the current state of knowledge about sexualities outside the framings of 'The West', by focusing on gender and sexuality within the context of Central and Eastern Europe. Providing case studies drawn from a range of 'post-communist' countries, this volume brings together the latest research on the formation of sexualities in Central and Eastern Europe, alongside analyses of the sexual and national identity politics of the region. Engaged with current debates within queer studies surrounding temporality and knowledge production, and inspired by post-colonial critique, the book problematises the western hegemony that often characterises sexuality studies, and presents local theoretical insights better attuned to their geo-temporal realities.

- Description
- The empowerment of women is a broadly endorsed strategy for solving a host of difficult problems, from child poverty to gender violence to international development. This multi-disciplinary volume offers critiques of the notion of empowerment based on studies in twenty countries in all regions of the world. The introduction places concepts of empowerment in the context of models of the market and of community, showing how contradictions in these models as they are enacted on the ground provide both spaces and constraints for women. The chapters consider opportunities for women in the context of globalization, resurgent nationalism and politicized religion, cultures of masculinity, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. They show how initiatives at national or global levels are transformed by local cultures and power structures, and demonstrate the fruitfulness of tensions between universal values of human rights and contextualized understandings.

- Based on research and collaboration across Europe this book provides cutting edge debate on issues in the practice and policy of trafficking in women. Practitioners, academics and policy-makers contribute their up-to-date and comprehensive analysis. The authors look at how globalization and gender discrimination fuel the increasing numbers of women trafficked in Europe. To what extent is trafficking a result of decreasing opportunities to migrate legally into the European Union? Would an economic analysis of trafficking support measures to combat the practice? Who are the traffickers and who are the victims? They look at legislative models that can be used to combat trafficking across Europe. How can victims of trafficking be better protected and the human rights approach can add something.

- Description
- The book is focused on intersectionality between gender, race and disability and the question of whether this intersection can be adequately addressed in (EU) law. The discussion rests on two basic assumptions. First, the multiplication of 'discrimination grounds' in EU law and other legal regimes should not result in a dilution of the demands of equality law. Accordingly, the book focuses on the three key grounds - race, gender and disability.. Second, any multi-ground non-discrimination law framework needs to engage with the question of discrimination on several grounds.

They begin by looking at the evolution of the Council of Europe apparatus to combat discrimination and the anti-discrimination standards prescribed by its institutions. Then they examine the legislative measures recently adopted by the European Union, and conclude with a comparative perspective of all measures adopted at the European level to combat racial and ethnic discrimination. .Part 1.
