- Description
- This book takes a look at women whose voices have only recently begun to be heard in Japanese society: politicians, practitioners of traditional arts, writers, radicals, wives, mothers, bar hostesses, department store and blue-collar workers. This collection of essays gives a interdisciplinary view of contemporary Japanese women while challenging readers to see the development of Japanese women's lives against the backdrop of domestic and global change. These essays provide a 'second generation' analysis of roles, issues and social change.

- Description
- Based on the lives and crimes of twenty real women, dokufu (poison women) narratives emerged as a powerful presence in Japan during the 1870s. During this time, as the nation moved from feudalism to oligarchic government, such accounts articulated the politics and position of underclass women, sexual morality, and female suffrage. Over the next century, the figure of the oversexed female criminal, usually guilty of robbery or murder, became ubiquitous in modern Japanese culture. In Poison Woman, Marran investigates this powerful icon, its shifting meanings, and its influence on defining women’s sexuality and place in Japan. She begins by considering Meiji gesaku literature, in which female criminality was often medically defined and marginalized as abnormal. She describes the small newspapers (koshinbun) that originally reported on poison women, establishing journalistic and legal conventions for future fiction about them. She examines zange, or confessional narratives, of female and male ex-convicts from the turn of the century, then reveals how medical and psychoanalytical literature of the 1920s and 1930s offered contradictory explanations of the female criminal as an everywoman or a historical victim of social circumstances and the press. She concludes by exploring postwar pulp fiction (kasutori), film and underground theater of the 1970s, and the feminist writer Tomioka Taeko’s take on the transgressive woman.

- Description
- During the Asia-Pacific War, the Japanese military forced hundreds of thousands of women across Asia into 'comfort stations' where they were repeatedly raped and tortured. Japanese imperial forces claimed they recruited women to join these stations in order to prevent the mass rape of local women and the spread of venereal disease among soldiers. In reality, these women were kidnapped and coerced into sexual slavery. This book features the personal narratives of twelve women forced into sexual slavery when the Japanese military occupied their hometowns. Beginning with their prewar lives and continuing through their enslavement to their postwar struggles for justice, the interviews reveal that the prolonged suffering of the survivors was not contained to wartime atrocities but was a lifelong condition resulting from various social, political, and cultural factors.

- Description
- In this book, the author explores the Western portrayal of Japanese women, and geishas in particular, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. She argues that in the West, Japanese women have come to embody certain ideas about feminine sexuality, and she analyzes how these ideas have been expressed in diverse art forms, ranging from fiction and opera to the visual arts and music videos. Among the many works Kawaguchi discusses are the art criticism of Baudelaire and Huysmans, the opera Madama Butterfly, the sculptures of Rodin, the Broadway play Teahouse of the August Moon, and the international best seller Memoirs of a Geisha. Butterfly’s Sisters also examines the impact on early twentieth-century theatre, drama, and dance theory of the performance styles of the actresses Madame Hanako and Sadayakko, both formerly geishas.

- Description
- This book analyzes the establishment, suppression, forgetting and illegibility of the Japanese military "comfort system" (1932–1945). Although the "comfort women" are considered exemplary of both the past violation and the contemporary empowerment of Asian women, the author argues that it destabilized the conceptual demarcation of the category. The author traces how "Asian women" were distinguished and wiped out as subjects of the traffic in women, sexual slavery and violence against women. She also explores how specific modes of recovery and justice were determined by geopolitical and economic changes, ranging from U.S.-guided movements of capital across Asia at the end of the Cold War to the emergence of new media technologies that facilitated the global circulation of "comfort women" stories.

- Description
- This book examines the relationship between femininity and women’s self-directed violence in contemporary Japanese culture. The book develops the concept of ‘contradictive femininity’ and shows how in Japanese culture, women’s paradoxical roles are thematised through three character construction. It then demonstrates how eating disorders and self-harm are included in normative femininity and suggests that such self-directed violence can be interpreted as coping strategies. Looking at novels, artwork, manga, anime, TV dramas and news stories, the book analyses both well known Japanese culture such as Murakami Haruki’s literary works and Miyazaki Hayao’s animation, as well as culture unavailable to non-Japanese readers

- Description
- This publication offers an overview of the diversity of feminist thought and practice in Japan from the early twentieth century to the present. Drawing on methodologies and approaches from anthropology, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, history, literature, media studies, and sociology, each chapter presents the results of research based on some combination of original archival research, textual analysis, ethnographic interviews, and participant observation. The volume is organized into sections focused on activism and activists, employment and education, literature and the arts, and boundary crossing. Some chapters shed light on ideas and practices that resonate with feminist thought but find expression through the work of writers, artists, activists, and laborers who have not typically been considered feminist; others revisit specific moments in the history of Japanese feminisms in order to complicate or challenge the dominant scholarly and popular understandings of specific activists, practices, and beliefs.

- Between the 1870s and 1945, dress was a signifier of Japan's transition from an 'Oriental' country - subordinate to the West - to a bearer of 'universal' modernity in East Asia. By the early 20th century, when Japan had largely achieved diplomatic equality with the West and colonial dominion over parts of Asia, Western dress had come to be taken for granted by 'modern' Japanese men and used as a symbol of equal rights by some Japanese women.

- States in general have been slower to incorporate the international diffusion of women’s human rights norms domestically than other human rights norms. Why has the diffusion of these norms varied so greatly between states? Why are some states more responsive and exert more effort than others to comply with these norms? Engendering the State explains these key issues and argues that the gender biased identity of many states represents the most significant barrier to diffusion. It also explores how particular norms have diffused into certain states at specific points in time, as a consequence of international and domestic pressure.

- Focus on representations of male-male sexuality in literature from the Meiji period (1868-1912), the era when Japan embarked on a modernization campaign. The author argues that a heterosexualization of literature emerged in this era as a key component of the production of Japanese literary and cultural modernity. At the same time, male-male sexuality also surfaced as an important cultural symbol for segments of society opposed to the push to modernize, according to the author. He describes how these conflicting attitudes toward male-male sexuality manifested themselves in Meiji literary history.

- prostitutie, troostmeisjes, economie, Japan, 1950-1999, 20e eeuw
- Description
- This book provides an overview of the Japanese sex industry in the postwar era. It argues that gender inequality in contemporary Japan is a consequence of the policies this period, when a 'sexual contract' was introduced. This contract provided underpaid salesmen with easy access to female prostitutes through trips to resorts, hostess bars and prostitution tourism to South Korea. It contends that Japan’s economic growth came at the price of environmental and labour degradation as well as gender inequality.
