- Description
- This book reconsiders a reliance on the criminal justice system for solving women’s struggles with domestic violence: acknowledge how militarism subjects women to extreme levels of violence perpetrated from within, and without, their communities: recognize how the medical establishment inflicts violence—such as involuntary sterilization and inadequate health care—on women of color: devise new strategies for cross-cultural dialogue, theorizing and alliance building. .INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence was born in 2000, when more than two thousand activists from diverse communities came together to end the war being waged on women of color in the US and around the world. Now the largest multiracial, grassroots, feminist organization in the United States, INCITE! boasts chapters in more than 20 cities.

- Description
- The essays in this book reveal the diverse ways black women experience and represent sexuality. The contributors highlight the range of tactics that black women use to express their sexual desires and identities. .The authors take not only an interdisciplinary approach, but also an intergenerational one, in conversation with the foremothers of black feminist studies. In addition, the book explores a diverse archive of representations, covering everything from blues to hip-hop, from Crash to Precious, from Sister Souljah to Edwidge Danticat. Revealing that black female sexuality is anything but a black-and-white issue, this collection demonstrates how to appreciate a whole spectrum of subjectivities, experiences, and desires.

- Phyllis Chesler was a pioneer of Second Wave Feminism. Chesler and the women who came out between 1972-1975 brought class action lawsuits on behalf of economic discrimination, opened rape crisis lines and shelters for battered women, held marches and sit-ins for abortion and equal rights. They began the first-ever national and international public conversations about birth control and abortion, sexual harassment, violence against women, female orgasm, and a woman’s right to kill in self-defense. The feminist movement has changed over the years, but Chesler knew some of its first pioneers, including Gloria Steinem, Kate Millett and Andrea Dworkin. Some had been viewed as whores, witches, and madwomen, but were changing the world and becoming major players in history.

- Brownridge investigates groups of women who are particularly vulnerable to violent victimization from an intimate male partner. In the past, there has been a reluctance to address this issue to avoid stereotyping vulnerable groups of women. However, developments in the field, particularly intersectionality theory, which recognizes women’s diversity in experiences of violence, suggest that the time has come to make the study of violence in vulnerable populations a new sub-field in the area. The author identifies where violence on vulnerable populations fits within the field, develops a method for studying vulnerable populations, and brings new knowledge to the field through the analysis original data on eight populations of women who are particularly vulnerable to violence.

- Garfield argues that presentation of African American women as victims of exclusively male violence is not sufficient to explain the violence and its consequences. She explores how women experience racialized or class-based violence and how these forms of violence are related to gendered violence. She presents life-history interviews with nine women and shows how women can maintain, sustain, and in some instances regain their sense of human worth as a result of their experiences of violation.

- Aptheker was an activist participant in some of the major events of the '60s and '70s—the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley, the antiwar movement and the Angela Davis trial. As the daughter of U.S. Communist Party leader Herbert Aptheker, she was virtually a red-diaper princess, only to 'fall from grace' with the party in her late 20s. Her highly politicized New York City upbringing was one of middle class comfort, although sorely affected by McCarthyist persecution—as well as sexual abuse by her father, deeply repressed memories of which she uncovered in adulthood. The author, who taught her first women's studies course in 1977, describes herself as a latecomer to the women's movement (the Communist Party considered it 'petit bourgeois '). A personal transformation paralleled the political, as her repressed lesbianism also surfaced and gradually culminated in a fulfilling long-term relationship.

- Description
- This book explores the ways that 1960s political movements shaped local, grassroots feminism in Washington, D.C. Rejecting notions of a universal sisterhood, Valk argues that activists periodically worked to bridge differences for the sake of improving women's plight, even while maintaining distinct political bases. Washington, D.C. is a critical site for studying the dynamics of the feminist movement, not only for its strategic location vis-a-vis the federal government but because in 1970 over seventy percent of the city's population was African American. Valk shows feminists of various backgrounds both coming together to promote a notion of 'sisterhood' and being deeply divided along the lines of class, race, and sexuality. In exploring women's unity (or lack thereof) in the liberation movement, Valk shows how African American women activists, who were primarily focused on racial and economic justice, influenced and provided important opposition to the organizational activities of white women.

Placing stories of individual women - such as Sandra Bland, Rekia Boyd, Dajerria Becton, Monica Jones, and Mya Hall - in the broader context of police violence and mass incarceration, it documents the evolution of movements centering women’s experiences of policing and demands a radical rethinking of our visions of safety - and the means we devote to achieving it.

- Description
- In this collection voices in feminist and queer theory are brought together to create an interdisciplinary dialogue that will define the terms of the debates between and within feminist and queer a theoretical framework. These debates revolve around the multiple interrelated issues - such as gender, identity, intimacy, privacy, and sex harassment - that all extend from the emphasis given to gender on the one hand and sex and sexuality on the other. These two theories have much in common but also much that distinguishes them from one another, and that causes tension. The authors in this volume explore the legal, political, social and cultural implications of their distinct theoretical approaches to gender and sexuality.
