- Description
- In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, the mantle of feminist elect has descended on Hillary Clinton and most mainstream feminist leaders and organizations endorse her. In this atmosphere, dissent seems tantamount to political betrayal. In this book feminists contest this simplistic reading of the candidate. A look at Hillary Clinton’s track record on welfare, Wall Street, criminal justice, education, and war reveals that she has advanced laws and policies that have done real harm to the lives of women and children across the country and the globe.

- Description
- The mainstream reproductive rights movement, largely dominated by white women and consumed with protecting the right to abortion, has failed to respond adequately to the policing, criminalization, and incarceration of large numbers of poor people and people of color. This book places issues of race, class, and gender at the center of its reproductive rights and social justice agenda by focusing on a key concern among women of color and poor communities today: the difficulty of maintaining families and sustaining community in the face of increasing criminalization. .Women of color have articulated a broad reproductive rights agenda embedded in issues of equality and social justice. They have challenged coercive population policies, demanded access to safe and accessible birth control and asserted their right to economic and political resources to maintain healthy children. .This book discusses the policing of bodies by examining the experiences of women prisoners, women with AIDS in correctional facilities, women in systems of prostitution, immigrant women and women of color.

- Description
- The United States has a lot of organizations that offer crucial representation for groups that are marginalized in national politics, from women to racial minorities to the poor. In this study of these organizations Strolovitch explores the challenges and opportunities they face in the new millennium, as waning legal discrimination coincides with increasing political and economic inequalities within the populations they represent. Drawing on new data from a survey of 286 organizations and interviews with forty officials, Strolovitch finds that groups too often prioritize the interests of their most advantaged members: male rather than female racial minorities, for example, or affluent rather than poor women. But Strolovitch also finds that many organizations try to remedy this inequity, and she concludes by distilling their best practices into a set of principles that she calls affirmative advocacy—a form of representation that aims to overcome the entrenched but often subtle biases against people at the intersection of more than one marginalized group.

- Description
- This book is about the harms and crimes to which women are subjected as a result of global social processes and their efforts to take control of their own futures. The chapters explore the criminogenic and damaging consequences of the policies of the global financial institutions as well as the effects of growing economic polarisation both in pockets of the developed world and most markedly in the global south. Another theme addresses human rights from the standpoint of indigenous women, minority women and those seeking refuge. Women in the poorest countries are sceptical as to the efficacy of rights claims in the face of the depredations of international and global capital, and the social dislocation produced thereby. In the end there is no solution without politics, and in both the opening and the closing sections of this book there are chapters which address this. What continues to be special about women's political practice is the connection between the groundedness of small groups and the fluidity and flexibility of regional and international networks: the effective politics of the global age.

- Description
- This reader examines the ways in which work influences our roles in both the public and private spheres. Goodman has selected a key set of essays that examine influential arguments on such themes as the origins of the gendered division of labor: historical trends and economic transformations that affect and are affected by women's position in market and non-market work: the effects of occupational and job segregation by sex on status, pay, and promotion: the ways in which formal and informal organizational culture shape and in turn are shaped by gender in professional and managerial positions: class consciousness among wage-earning men and women: the different forms of gender discrimination that women and men face in the workplace: the problems working parents face and the ways in which different societies, subcultures and genders cope: and alternative approaches to improving the lives of working women and their families in the global economy.

- Description
- This book explores the ways that 1960s political movements shaped local, grassroots feminism in Washington, D.C. Rejecting notions of a universal sisterhood, Valk argues that activists periodically worked to bridge differences for the sake of improving women's plight, even while maintaining distinct political bases. Washington, D.C. is a critical site for studying the dynamics of the feminist movement, not only for its strategic location vis-a-vis the federal government but because in 1970 over seventy percent of the city's population was African American. Valk shows feminists of various backgrounds both coming together to promote a notion of 'sisterhood' and being deeply divided along the lines of class, race, and sexuality. In exploring women's unity (or lack thereof) in the liberation movement, Valk shows how African American women activists, who were primarily focused on racial and economic justice, influenced and provided important opposition to the organizational activities of white women.

- Collection of essays on the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement. The author argues that mainstream feminists rarely discuss basic needs as a feminist issue and as a result fail to address the needs of all women. Drawing on her own experiences with hunger, violence, and hypersexualization, along with commentary on politics, pop culture and the stigma of mental health, she writes a call to all would-be feminists to live out the true mandate of the movement in thought as well as in deed.

- What is poverty, how to measure it and how to tackle it, are the three questions to which this document responds, on the basis of the theoretical framework of gender studies. Poverty is considered as the result of power relations that first of all affect men and women in a different way, but then also indigenous and Afro-descendent women, older adults and the inhabitants of certain areas. The multidimensional nature of this phenomenon is shown, as well as the virtues and limitations of traditional forms of measuring poverty, drawing attention to specific aspects which explain the disadvantages suffered by women: the invisibility of unpaid domestic labour, the time poverty associated with such labour: the labour and wage discrimination against women: the importance of studies of the family from a gender perspective and the challenges for public policy.

- In this collective biography, Rhonda Y. Williams takes us behind, and beyond, politically expedient labels to provide an incisive and intimate portrait of poor black women in urban America. Williams challenges the notion that low-income housing was a resounding failure that doomed three consecutive generations of post-war Americans to entrenched poverty. Instead, she recovers a history of grass-roots activism, of political awakening, and of class mobility, all facilitated by the creation of affordable public housing.
