- Description
- Will gender balance in elected assemblies soon be reached? Around 100 years after women's suffrage was gained most countries are still at some distance from this goal. In 2013, the average representation of women in the world's parliaments was around 20 per cent. This book analyses the longitudinal development of women's political representation in eight old democracies, where women were enfranchised before and around World War I: Denmark, Iceland, Germany, The Netherlands, New Jersey (USA), New South Wales (Australia), Sweden, and the United Kingdom. These countries/states have all followed an incremental track model of change in women's position in political life, but have followed different trajectories. This slow development stands in contrast to recent examples of fast track development in many countries from the Global South, not least as a result of the adoption of gender quotas. Furthermore, the book discusses in four separate chapters the common historical development in old democracies, the different trajectories and sequences, the framing of women politicians, and the impact of party and party system change. In this book a new model of male dominance is developed and defined in terms of both degree and scope. Four stages are identified: male monopoly, small minority, large minority, and gender balance.

- Description
- Although European policy initiatives to advance the position of women in Academia have proliferated, both at national and EU levels, serious inequities of many kinds remain. This situation is exposed and investigated in this book, which presents reports and discussions from a conference held at the Law Faculty of Lund University in December 2004. The participants law professors and social scientists present detailed reports on domestic experiences and regulations in eight European countries Among the many issues raised are the following: positive action in theory and practice: the progress of the EU Commission s strategy to integrate equal opportunity into all Community policies and activities: the motives for promoting women in Academia: the extensive group of part-timers and fixed-term employees at the margin of the traditional academic career: the importance of creating a situation in Academia where woman excellence shows: and the development of marketable research disciplines embodied in private research institutes.

- Description
- In this collection of essays the experiences of women who migrate to the West and work there as prostitutes are thoroughly described. It becomes clear that their lives and aspirations are much more complicated than is usually assumed, and that easy generalizations about trafficking and forced labour do not always hold up.

- Description
- This book assesses the effects of globalization on the life courses of women in thirteen countries across Europe and America in the second half of the 20th century. It represents a longitudinal analysis of micro-level data from these OECD countries focusing exclusively on women’s relationship to the labor market in a globalizing world. The contributors examine women’s employment entries, exits and job mobility and present evidence of women’s increased labor market attachment and reduced employment quality in most of the countries studied. They also consider the life course changes influenced by larger transformations in society and, in doing so, explicitly link the phenomena of globalization to individual women’s lives in Europe and North America.

- Description
- This book explores whether the forces of globalization affect the erosion of standard career patterns of mid-career men in twelve OECD countries. Overwhelming evidence against the ‘individualization of inequality’ thesis is provided – it is argued that equality remains largely stratified by factors such as occupational class and educational level, and in some countries has even grown over time. .The contributors illustrate that globalization appears to have influenced the rise of ‘patchwork’ careers in countries where workers have been increasingly less protected by institutional configurations. These countries include Denmark, Mexico, The Netherlands, the UK and the US, as well as post-socialistic countries such as Hungary, Estonia and the Czech Republic. Interestingly, there is no evidence that men’s careers have become more erratic in Italy, Spain, Sweden or Germany. Nation-specific institutions, such as welfare regimes, education and training systems and employment relations remain key factors impacting on job mobility patterns.
