- Description
- Popular and academic representations of the free mulatta concubine depict women of mixed black African and white racial descent as defined by their sexual attachment to white men, and thus they offer evidence of the means to and dimensions of their freedom within Atlantic slave societies. In this book the author contends that the uniformity of these representations conceals the figure’s centrality to the practices and production of diaspora. She argues that the concubine figure’s manifestation as both historical subject and African diasporic goddess indicates her centrality to understanding how free and enslaved black subjects performed gender, theorized race and freedom, and produced their own diasporic identities. The book traces the free mulatta concubine across the physical and imaginative landscapes of three Atlantic sites: Gorée Island, New Orleans, and Saint Domingue (Haiti).

- Looking forward to the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of essays looks back at the decades since women won the right to vote to analyze the changes, developments, and even continuities in women's roles in the broad political sphere. Ultimately, the book asks two questions about the last 100 years of women's suffrage: How did the Nineteenth Amendment alter the American political system? and How has women's engagement in politics changed over the last 100 years?

- Description
- This book describes the experience of the white woman in colonial India in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It examines missionary and memsahibs' colonial writings probing their construction of Indian women of different classes and regions. Also examined are delineations of European female health issues in male authored colonial medical handbooks, which underline the misogyny undergirding this discourse. Giving voice to the Indian woman, this book also scrutinises the fiction of the first generation of western-educated Indian women who wrote in English, exploring their construction of white women and their negotiations with colonial modernities.

- Description
- In Ethnic Pride, American Patriotism the author presents a history of inter-war America from the perspective of new Slovak and Eastern European immigrant communities. .Like the groups that preceded them, Slovak immigrants came to define being American as adhering to its political principles: they saw no contradiction between being patriotic Americans and maintaining pride in their ancestry. To counter the negative effects of the 1924 immigration law, Slovaks mobilized a variety of political and cultural activities to insure group survival and promote ethnic pride. In numerous localities 'Slovak days' brought first and second generation immigrants together to celebrate their dual identity. .Alexander's study adds complexity and nuance to entrenched notions of conflicts between tradition-bound immigrants and their American-born children. Showing that ethnicity mattered to both generations, Alexander challenges generalizations derived from 'whiteness' studies

- Description
- This book asserts that the history of segregation within American women’s associations created a legacy of racial exclusivity and privilege. While acknowledging the progressive potential of women’s associations and the extent to which they created a legitimate outlet for American women’s public activism, it explores why such organizations failed to aid in issues of integration. This book demonstrates that white exclusivity and privilege was crucial to the authority and influence of these associations. The book examines the translation of what seemed on the surface to be relatively simple demands for racial integration into a far more significant confrontation with the frequently hidden structures and practices of white privilege.

- Description
- The pursuit of beauty in the South was linked to the tumultuous racial divides of the region, where the Jim Crow-era cosmetics industry came of age selling the idea of makeup that emphasized whiteness, and where, in the 1950s and 1960s, black-owned beauty shops served as crucial sites of resistance for civil rights activists. In these times of strained relations in the South, beauty became a signifier of power and affluence while it reinforced racial strife. Roberts examines a range of beauty products, practices, and rituals--cosmetics, hairdressing, clothing, and beauty contests--in settings that range from tobacco farms of the Great Depression to 1950s and 1960s college campuses. In so doing, she uncovers the role of female beauty in the economic and cultural modernization of the South.

Tongson interweaves the story of her namesake’s rise to fame in the 1960's and '70s with the trans-Pacific journey of herself and her musicians family between her native Philippines - where imitations of American pop styles flourished - and Carpenter's Southern California, and between notions of romance and queer desires.

- White settlers in the United States, who saw themselves as pioneers, were inspired by the state experiments of Australia and New Zealand that helped shape their commitment to an active state, women’s and workers’ rights. Both settler societies defined themselves as New World, against Old World feudal and aristocratic societies and Indigenous peoples deemed backward and primitive. In conversations, conferences and collaboration, transpacific networks were animated by a sense of racial kinship and investment in social justice. While “Asiatics” and “Blacks” would be excluded, Indians and Aborigines would be assimilated or absorbed. The political mobilizations of Indigenous progressives?in the Society of American Indians and the Australian Aborigines’ Progressive Association?testified to the power of Progressive thought but also to its repressive underpinnings.

- The essays in this book represent a cross-section of current research in the field of women's history with an intersectional approach. This collection employs approaches to study both the causes that have united American women and the conflicts that have divided them. Some essays uncover little-known aspects of women’s history, while others offer a fresh take on familiar events and figures, from Rosa Parks to Take Back the Night marches. Spanning the antebellum era to the present day, these essays convey the long histories and ongoing relevance of topics ranging from women’s immigration to incarceration, from acts of cross-dressing to the activism of feminist mothers.

- The author reads four writers - Lloyd Brown, Frank London Brown, Alice Childress, and Gwendolyn Brooks - and surveys the work of the visual artist Charles White. Her study recounts the targeting of African American as well as white writers during the McCarthy era, reconstructs the events of the 1959 Black Writers' Conference in New York, and argues for the ongoing influence of the Black Popular Front decades after it folded.

- Description
- This account recalls firsthand the upheaval surrounding court-ordered busing in the early 1970s to achieve school integration. Like many students at the vanguard of this great social experiment, sixth-grader Clara Silverstein was spit on, tripped, and shoved by her new schoolmates. At other times she was shunned altogether. In the conventional imagery of the civil rights era, someone in Silverstein's situation would be black. She was white, however—one of the few white students in her entire school. Her story, woven with historical details, confronts us with powerful questions about race and the use of our schools to engineer social change.

- Description
- 'Making girls into women' offers an account of the historical emergence of 'the lesbian' by looking at late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century women's writing. Kent proposes that modern lesbian identity in the United States has its roots not just, or even primarily, in sexology and medical literature, but in white, middle-class women's culture. Kent demonstrates how, as white women's culture shifted more and more from the home to the school, workplace, and boardinghouse, the boundaries between the public and private spheres began to dissolve. She not only analyses how texts present queer erotics, but also theorizes how texts might produce them in readers. She describes the ways postbellum sentimental literature such as that written by H. Beecher Stowe, L.M. Alcott and E.D. Kelley eroticises, reacts against, and even, in its own efforts to shape girls' selves, contributes to the production of queer female identifications and identities. Further on she considers works by Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein, Marianne Moore, and Elizabeth Bishop, as well as the queer subject-forming effects of another modern invention, the Girl Scouts.

- Description
- This book gives voice to women mathematicians from the late eighteenth century through to the present day. It documents the complex nature of the conditions women around the world have faced--and continue to face--while pursuing their careers in mathematics. The earlier parts of the book provide historical context and perspective, beginning with excursions into the lives of fifteen women born before 1920. Included are histories of collective efforts to improve women's opportunities in research mathematics. In addition, a photo essay puts a human face on the subject as it illustrates women's contributions in professional associations.. .More than eighty women from academe, government, and the private sector provide a rich mélange of insights and strategies for creating workable career paths while maintaining rewarding personal lives. The book discusses related social and cultural issues, and includes a summary of recent comparative data relating to women and men in mathematics and women from other sciences. First-person accounts provide explicit how-tos: many narratives demonstrate great determination and perseverance. Talented women vividly portray their pleasure in discovering new mathematics. The senior among them speak out candidly, interweaving their mathematics with autobiographical detail. At the beginning of a new century, women at all stages of their careers share their outlooks and experiences.

Among the subjects covered are black women's suffrage: female kin and female slaves in planters' wills: the northern myth of the rebel girl: second wave feminism in the South: and southern lesbians. Bringing to light the lives of Cherokee women, Appalachian 'coal daughters', and Jewish women in the South, the essays ensure that monolithic representations of southern womanhood are a thing of the past.

- Description
- Between 1879 and 1934, the United States government made a concerted effort to dissolve tribes by dividing communally-held lands and forcing American Indians to adopt Euro-American practices. Three progressive women seized a wave of national fascination with American Indians to fashion themselves as public storytellers and challenge the national drive to assimilate indigenous peoples. This book focuses on these women: white writer and activist Helen Hunt Jackson, the Paiute lecturer, educator, and political activist Sarah Winnemucca, whose Life Among the Piutes is believed to be the first Native American woman's autobiography: and Victoria Howard. Senier analyzes the texts of these three women closely. She convincingly argues that these complex texts have been misinterpreted as supporting the policy of assimilation, when they actually opposed the male, authoritarian voice.
