- Description
- This book traces the historical development of the realist singer through the café-concert and music hall and untangles her symbolic complexities in 1930s French cinema. In the figure of the realist singer the author shows the representation of femininity, class, and the urban milieu. It also provides a genealogy of female realist performance through analysis of the careers and film roles of Mistinguett, Josephine Baker, Fréhel, and Damia. Included is a select filmography.

- Description
- While living in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century, expatriate American writers Edith Warton (1862-1937) and Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) never crossed paths. They did rub shoulders in print, in autobiographical essays published by the Atlantic Monthly in 1933. Out of these essays grew the book-length autobiographies, 'A backward glance' (Wharton 1934) and 'The autobiography of Alice B. Toklas' (Stein 1933). By analyzing the personal and cultural contexts in wich these works were produced, as well as subjects common to both authors, Sloboda reveals the connections.

- Description
- In 1941 Marie-Madeleine Fourcade became the leader of a vast intelligence organization—the only woman to serve as a chef de résistance during the war. Her group’s name was Alliance, but the Gestapo dubbed it Noah’s Ark because its agents used the names of animals as their aliases. The name Marie-Madeleine chose for herself was Hedgehog. .No other French spy network lasted as long or supplied as much crucial intelligence as Alliance. The Gestapo pursued them relentlessly, capturing, torturing, and executing hundreds of its three thousand agents, including Fourcade’s own lover and many of her key spies. Although Fourcade, the mother of two young children, moved her headquarters every few weeks, constantly changing her hair color, clothing, and identity, she was captured twice by the Nazis. Both times she managed to escape and continued to hold her network together even as it repeatedly threatened to crumble around her.

- Description
- On an August evening in 1933, in a quiet, working-class neighborhood in Paris, eighteen-year-old Violette Nozière gave her mother and father glasses of barbiturate-laced 'medication,' which she told them had been prescribed by the family doctor: one of her parents died, the other barely survived. Almost immediately Violette's act of 'double parricide' became the most sensational private crime of the French interwar era--discussed and debated so passionately that it was compared to the Dreyfus Affair. Why would the beloved only child of respectable parents do such a thing? To understand the motives behind this crime and the reasons for its extraordinary impact, Sarah Maza delves into the abundant case records, re-creating the daily existence of Parisians whose lives were touched by the affair.

- Description
- Surrealist Masculinities offers an exploration of how surrealist visual production was shaped by constructions of gender and sexuality, particularly masculinity, in the 1920s and early 1930s. Amy Lyford builds on feminist critical approaches to surrealism, which have viewed the female body in surrealism as symptomatic of male misogyny: yet she also departs from such work by arguing that representations of an anxious, ambivalent, or perverse masculinity were integral to the movement's critique of France's 'return to order' in the years following World War I. This book analyzes surrealist work in relation to the history of surrealism and investigates how surrealist artists and writers appropriated contemporary medical science, advertising, and sexology in their quest to undermine the status quo.

- Description
- Laura Levine Frader’s synthesis of labor history and gender history brings to the fore failures in realizing the French social model of equality for all citizens. Challenging previous scholarship, she argues that the male breadwinner ideal was stronger in France in the interwar years than scholars have typically recognized, and that it had negative consequences for women’s claims to the full benefits of citizenship. She describes how ideas about masculinity, femininity, family, and work affected post–World War I reconstruction, policies designed to address France’s postwar population deficit, and efforts to redefine citizenship in the 1920s and 1930s. She demonstrates that gender divisions and the male breadwinner ideal were reaffirmed through the policies and practices of labor, management, and government. The social model that France implemented in the 1920s and 1930s incorporated fundamental social inequalities.

- Description
- In this publication the authors adopt a sociocultural approach to films made in France before, during, and after World War II, paying particular attention to the occupation years (1940–1944). Citing more than 300 films, they argue that films made in France between 1930 and 1956 created a national imaginary that equated masculinity with French identity. (Oorspr. titel: 'Drôle de guerre des sexes du cinema français, 1930-1956.)
