- Daniels investigates the white supremacist imagination, and argues that the ideology of white supremacist groups is much closer to core American values than most of us would like to believe. The book explores white supremacist ideology through an analysis of over 300 publications from a variety of white supremacist organizations. It examines the discourse of these publications and the ways in which 'whites,' 'blacks,' and 'Jews' are constructed within that discourse.

- Description
- This book is based on over 100 oral histories gathered from women from a variety of racial, ethnic, and geographical backgrounds. Buss analyzes this body of work, identifying common themes in women's lives and resistance that unite the oral histories she has gathered. From the beginning, her work has shed light on the inseparable, compounding effects of gender, race, ethnicity, and class on women's lives, what is now commonly called intersectionality. The book is structured thematically, with each chapter analyzing a concept that runs through the oral histories, e.g., agency, activism, religion.

- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- The essays in this book address the relationships between gender and the built environment, specifically architecture, in early modern Europe. In recent years scholars have begun to investigate the ways in which architecture plays a part in the construction of gendered identities. So far the debates have focused on the built environment of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the neglect of the early modern period. This book focuses on early modern Europe, a period decisive for our understanding of gender and sexuality. .Much excellent scholarship has enhanced our understanding of gender division in early modern Europe, but often this scholarship considers gender in isolation from other vital factors, especially social class. Central to the concerns of this book, therefore, is a consideration of the intersections of gender with social rank.

- Description
- Themes of embodiment and agency have long been central to feminist philosophical thought and have increasingly led feminists to extend their theorizing to encompass a range of identities shaped by processes of gender, race, class, disability, and sexuality. The intersection of these themes, however, has often been limited to analyzing how specific modes of socialized embodiment can be impediments to agency or autonomy. .This book brings together a range of theoretical perspectives and resources to the project in ways that stress possibilities as well as constraints. Contributors utilize phenomenology, psychoanalysis, care ethics, analytic philosophy, Hegelian critique, and postcolonial theory to examine embodiment and agency in contexts ranging from a child's struggle to find her own identity to global politics. Part I of this book explores how we become individually and collectively identified subjects through the possibilities for agency that arise from specific modes of embodiment. Part II continues the theme of embodied agency in contemporary sociopolitical contexts. It reconceptualizes the links between embodiment and moral agency in ways adequate to political realities, personal relationships, and collective responsibilities.

- The contributors to this book examine women and the construction of gender thematically, dealing with the areas of politics, law, religion, sexuality, literature and economics, and in a variety of social categories, from Christians and Moriscas, queens and merchants, peasants and visionaries, heretics and madwomen. The essays cover different regions in the Spanish monarchy, including Andalusia, Aragon, Castile, Catalonia, Valencia and Spanish America, from the fifteenth century through to the eighteenth century. The book focuses on two central themes: gender relations in the shaping of family and community life, and women's authority in spheres of power. The representation of women in a variety of texts such as poetry, court cases, or even account books illustrate the multifaceted world in which women lived, constantly choosing and negotiating their identities.

- Description
- The women who launched the radical second wave of the feminist movement believed in universal sisterhood and color-blind democracy. Their hopes, however, were soon dashed. To this day, the failure to create an .integrated movement remains a sensitive and contested issue. In this book Winifred Breines explores why a racially integrated women's liberation movement did not develop in the United States. .Drawing on flyers, letters, newspapers, journals, institutional records, and oral histories, Breines dissects how white and black women's participation in the movements of the 1960s led to the development of separate feminisms. Herself a participant in these events, Breines attempts to reconcile the explicit professions of anti-racism by white feminists with the accusations of mistreatment, ignorance, and neglect by African American feminists. Many radical white women, unable to see beyond their own experiences and idealism, often behaved in unconsciously or abstractly racist ways, despite their passionately anti-racist stance and hard work to develop an interracial movement. As Breines argues, however, white feminists' racism is not the only reason for the absence of an interracial feminist movement. Segregation, black women's interest in the Black Power movement, class differences, and the development of identity politics with an emphasis on 'difference' were all powerful factors that divided white and black women. By the late 1970s and early 1980s white feminists began to understand black feminism's call to include race and class in gender analyses, and black feminists began to give white feminists some credit for their political work. Despite early setbacks, white and black radical feminists eventually developed cross-racial feminist political projects.

- Why are women such prominent workers in the global marketplace? Why do so many perform jobs that involve carework? What political forces have made these women key participants in globalization? What are the consequences for the women themselves, for their families, and for societies and international relations in general? .This book offers an examination of globalization, examining the lives of the women at the center of these new global dynamics. Arguing that society is facing multiple crises of care, the authors develop a new framework for understanding the interplay of globalization, gender, and carework. In four original essays, they examine gender, race, and class inequality: migration, citizenship, and the politics of social control: the evolving meanings of motherhood: and new social definitions of carework and the personal transformation of careworkers. Excerpts from the classic works in the field as well as recent cutting-edge research studies support the examination of each of these growing global crises.

- How are the ways that race organizes our lives related to the ways gender and class organize our lives? How might these organizing mechanisms conflict or work together? In this book the author likens race, class, and gender to foods – foods that are produced in fields, mixed together in bowls, and digested in our social and institutional bodies. In the field, one food may contaminate another through cross-pollination. In the mixing bowl, each food’s original molecular structure changes in the presence of others. And within a meal, the presence of one food may impede or facilitate the digestion of another. At each of these sites, the “foods” of race, class, and gender are involved in dynamic relationships with each other that have implications for the shape – or the taste – of our social order.

She pictured herself pen in hand while the baby napped, but instead found herself traumatised by a difficult birth and shell-shocked by the start of motherhood. Living abroad provided her with access to affordable domestic labour, and, hiring a nanny gave her back the ability to work. At first she thought she had little in common with the women she hired. They were important to her because they made her free. When Pooja, an Indian nanny who had been absorbed into the family, disappeared one night with no explanation, Megan was forced to confront the truth: these women were not replaceable, and her life had become inextricably intertwined with theirs.

This second edition gives a summary of the theories surrounding the role and function of fashion in modern society. Entwistle examines how fashion plays a crucial role in the formation of modern identity through its articulation of the body, gender and sexuality. The book offers a synthesis between the literature on fashion and dress and the sociology of the body. The book shows how an understanding of fashion and dress requires an understanding of the meanings acquired by the body in culture since it is the body that fashion speaks to and which is dressed in almost all social situations and encounters.

- Beginning in the 1990s large numbers of women from China and Southeast Asia married men in Taiwan. They now number over 400,000. Traditional ideas of marriage, such as the belief that a woman 'marries out' of her natal family to be dependent upon her husband and his family, and the idea that a man should 'marry down' to a woman of a lesser social and economic status, have not kept pace with changes in women's educational and career opportunities. How these relationships are formed, how they impact gendered understandings of women and men, how families are constituted and relationships developed, and how they affect the children of these families and their education, are the issues explored in this book.

These writers share a commitment to combining extreme content with formally radical techniques in order to enact varieties of gender, sex, race, class and nation-based experience that, they suggest, may only be “represented” accurately through the experimental unmaking of dominant structures of rationality.

- Rottenberg maintains that because neoliberalism reduces everything to market calculations it needs feminism in order to 'solve' issues related to reproduction and care. She shows how women of color and poor and immigrant women most often serve as the unacknowledged care-workers who enable professional women to strive toward balance, arguing that neoliberal feminism legitimates the exploitation of the majority of women while disarticulating any kind of structural critique.

Introductory essays at the beginning of each section bring the readings together, provide historical and intellectual context, and point to critical additional readings. Five core theoretical concepts: gender, difference, women’s experiences, the personal is political, and intersectionality, anchor the anthology’s organizational framework. New to this edition, text boxes in the introductory essays add excerpts from the writings of foundational theorists that help define important theoretical concepts.

- Description
- This book describes the experience of the white woman in colonial India in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It examines missionary and memsahibs' colonial writings probing their construction of Indian women of different classes and regions. Also examined are delineations of European female health issues in male authored colonial medical handbooks, which underline the misogyny undergirding this discourse. Giving voice to the Indian woman, this book also scrutinises the fiction of the first generation of western-educated Indian women who wrote in English, exploring their construction of white women and their negotiations with colonial modernities.

- Description
- Davis takes readers behind the scenes of two hundred years’ worth of conflicts over the existence, separation, and equity of gendered public restrooms, documenting at each step how bathrooms have been entangled with bigger cultural matters: the importance of the public good, the reach of institutional inclusion, the nature of gender difference, and the myriad privileges of social status. Chronicling the debut of nineteenth-century “comfort stations,” twentieth-century mandates requiring equal-but-separate men’s and women’s rooms, and twenty-first-century uproar over laws like North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” Davis reveals how public restrooms are far from marginal or unimportant social spaces.

- The authors demonstrate how women were able to co-opt the public face of friendship throughout the years. Chronicling shifting attitudes toward friendship from the Bible and the Romans to the Enlightenment to the women’s rights movements of the ‘60s up to Sex and the City and Bridesmaids, they reveal how the concept of female friendship has been linked to social and cultural movements that have defined human history.

- Description
- From the days of the penny press to the contemporary world of social media, journalistic accounts of teen girls in trouble have been a mainstay of the U.S. news media. Often the stories represent these girls as either victims or whores, using news-gathering practices that question girls' ability to perform femininity properly, especially as they act in public recreational space. This book takes a look at working-class girls in dance halls of the early 1900s: girls' track and field teams in the 1920s to 1940s: Elvis Presley fans in the mid-1950s: punk rockers in the late 1970s and early 1980s: and girls using the Internet in the early twenty-first century. In each case, issues of gender, socioeconomic status, and race are explored within their historical context. The book argues that by marginalizing and stereotyping teen girls over the past century, mass media have perpetuated a pattern of gendered crisis that ultimately limits the cultural and political power of the young women it covers.

- Description
- In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.

- As demands on them intensified, the women working to provide American troops with clothing, medical supplies, and support services became increasingly aware of their key role in the war effort. Middle-class African Americans worked to desegregate voluntary associations such as the Red Cross and the USO, and institute a policy of respectability that would undercut pernicious racial stereotypes. Working-class black women began to use their indispensability in industry to leverage demands for equal employment, welfare and citizenship benefits, fair treatment on factory floors, good working conditions, and other considerations previously denied them.

- 'No more separate spheres!' explores the limitations of thinking about nineteenth-century American culture within the narrow rubric of 'male public' and 'female private' spheres. This collection examines the ways that the separate spheres binary has malingered unexamined in feminist criticism, American literary studies, and debates on the public sphere. Using American literary studies as a way to talk about changing categories of analysis, these essays discuss the work of major authors as Catharine Sedgwick, Herman Melville, Pauline E. Hopkins, Frederick Douglass, Catherine Beecher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, W.E.B. Du Bois, Sarah Orne Jewett, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and María Ampara Ruiz de Burton.
