- Description
- In this anniversary edition to celebrate the 35th jubilee of LOVA the focus is on etnographies of gender and the body. Irma Beusink presented a paper at he LOVA conference in Amsterdam, July 2014, using metaphors to analyze differences within feminisms and their translations into the governmental policies and political statements of indigenous women's organizations in Bolivia. Breast cancer is the second most frequent cancer in the world and a mastectomy is the main method of treatment. Mastectomized women must reconstruct the way that they express their femininity and the symbols that identify them. In El Salvador significant changes in social life have occurred due to the levels of violence that the maras, or transnational street gangs, have generated. How adolescent women living in mara-controlled territories associate themselves with the maras and how their associations impact their sexuality and life strategy choices are discussed by Edith Yesenia Pena Sánches en Mónica Paola Zúniga Escobar. Authors describe the corporeality of an ethnographic view of morbid obesity, technoscience and identity by analyzing the story of a woman with morbid obesity in Mexico City. Anorexia nervosa as a health problem shows a prevalence of 0.5 to 5% in Mexico and it is mainly shown in adolescent and young adult women. In his paper Matthew W Maycock shows certain forms of competition and the denial of pain, both of which are integral to being rickshaw drivers, in light of their implications for masculine bodies and performances. The last 10 years has seen an increase in traditional bride abduction (ukuthwala) cases in South Africa. Recent cases share the common element of sexual violence of under-aged girls by much older men, or even groups of men. Diana Dubrovska takes a look at female sex tourism in the Caribbean and Latin America. In her paper Heather Tucker considers the contemporary Euro-American and European interests and outrage over the 'barbarity' of anti-homosexuality legislation in countries in Africa. Ourania Tsiakalou pays attention to the massive detentions of trans women that took place in Greece as well as some other instances of transphobia, as it was presented in the media and in the public sphere.

It examines the discourse of these publications and the ways in which 'whites,' 'blacks,' and 'Jews' are constructed within that discourse.

This collection brings together more than fifty of the articles she has written over the past fifteen years. Included alongside many of her best-known pieces are previously unpublished essays as well as interviews conducted with Wallace about her work. Dark Designs and Visual Culture charts the development of a singular, pathbreaking black feminist consciousness.

- This book focuses on data available about actual trends in girls’ uses of violence, the scholars here find that by virtually any measure, incidents of girls’ violence are going down, not up. Additionally, rather than attributing girls’ violence to personality or to girls becoming “more like boys,” the contributors examine the contexts that produce violence in girls, demonstrating how addressing the unique problems that confront girls in dating relationships, families, school hallways and classrooms, and in distressed urban neighborhoods can help reduce girls’ use of violence.

- This book is based on over 100 oral histories gathered from women from a variety of racial, ethnic, and geographical backgrounds. Buss analyzes this body of work, identifying common themes in women's lives and resistance that unite the oral histories she has gathered. From the beginning, her work has shed light on the inseparable, compounding effects of gender, race, ethnicity, and class on women's lives, what is now commonly called intersectionality. The book is structured thematically, with each chapter analyzing a concept that runs through the oral histories, e.g., agency, activism, religion.

The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

While the focus of the report is on the status of Black women, comparisons between Black women and other racial and ethnic groups of women (and men) are presented to contextualize the data. Basic demographic data for each state are also provided. The report concludes with recommendations to improve the status of Black women in the United States.

- In 1977, Marcia Muller invaded the all-male domain of detective literature and within a decade was established as the mother of the female hardboiled private eye. She is now the author of four detective series, including the critically acclaimed Sharon McCone series of more than two dozen novels. This collection critically assesses Marcia Muller's writing and reevaluates current critical views on women's detective fiction in general. In the first two of the book's three sections, essays explore Muller's engagement with modern and postmodern feminism, ethnicity, and the socially underprivileged. The third section focuses on one of Muller's major themes, the trauma of history. Drawing from the feminist, historicist, mythic, psychoanalytic, and cultural approaches found in all three sections, the conclusion offers a panoramic perspective on Muller's accomplishments.

It also addresses a number of compelling topics, including the effects of globalization on notions of masculinity, the difficulties faced by Muslim women living in post-9/11 America, and the perceptions of 'blackness' worldwide.

- Markens takes on one of the most important issues on the fertility front--surrogate motherhood--in a book that illuminates the culture wars that have erupted over new reproductive technologies in the United States. In an analysis of legislative responses to surrogacy in the states of New York and California, Markens explores how discourses about gender, family, race, genetics, rights, and choice have shaped policies aimed at this issue. She examines the views of key players, including legislators, women's organizations, religious groups, the media, and others. In a study that finds ideological agreement among those with opposing views of surrogate motherhood, Markens challenges common assumptions about our responses to reproductive technologies and at the same time offers a fascinating picture of how reproductive politics shape social policy.

- Using examples from dozens of films and TV programs, Brode demonstrates that Disney entertainment has consistently portrayed Native Americans, African Americans, women, gays, individual acceptance of one's sexual orientation, and alternatives to Judeo-Christian religious values in a highly positive light. Assuming a contrarian stance, Brode refutes the overwhelming body of 'serious' criticism that dismisses Disney entertainment as racist and sexist. Instead, he reveals through close textual analysis how Disney introduced audiences to such politically correct principles as mainstream feminism. In so doing, Brode challenges the popular perception of Disney fare as a bland diet of programming that people around the world either uncritically deem acceptable for their children or angrily revile as reactionary pabulum for the masses. Providing a long overdue and thoroughly detailed alternative, Brode makes a highly convincing argument that with an unwavering commitment to racial diversity and sexual difference, coupled with a vast global popularity, Disney entertainment enabled those successive generations of impressionable youth who experienced it to create today's aura of multiculturalism and our politically correct value system.

- The Family Flamboyant is a graceful and lucid account of the many routes to family formation. Weaving together personal experience and political analysis in an examination of how race, gender, sexuality, class, and other hierarchies function in family politics, Marla Brettschneider draws on her own experience in a Jewish, multiracial, adoptive, queer family in order to theorize about the layered realities that characterize families in the United States today. Brettschneider uses critical race politics, feminist insight, class-based analysis, and queer theory to offer a distinct and distinctly Jewish contribution to both the family debates and the larger project of justice politics. .'The Family Flamboyant is a spirited testimony to the richness and multiplicity of family life, and a model of how reflections on one's own experience and scholarship can illuminate one another to mutual advantage.

- Description
- This book advances our understanding of minority rights by focusing on conflicts that arise within minority groups and by examining the different sorts of responses that the liberal state might have to these conflicts. Groups around the world are increasingly successful in maintaining or winning autonomy. In light of this trend, a crucial question emerges: what happens to individuals within groups who find that their group discriminates against them?

- These essays provide an accessible presentation of contemporary feminism and study of religion and reveal how feminism has affected religious institutions, theology and individual religious/spiritual practice. They describe the connections between the feminist movement from the early 1970s and religious studies as they have developed in the U.S. since then. Readings range from academic analyses to accounts of personal decision-making and struggle. It includes first-person and imaginative literature along with historical and analytical pieces from such authors as Jacquelyn Grant, Kwok Pui-Lan, Carol Christ, and Judith Plaskow. Multi-cultural and multi-generational representation from established voices and Third-Wave feminists. It includes three pieces by Muslim writers, four by African Americans, four by Jewish feminists, three by Latinas, and two by Asian Americans. These readings illustrate how women from different backgrounds have struggled to reconcile loyalties to their ethnic and religious communities with criticism of the status and treatment of women with those communities' religious traditions

- Cecily Devereux reconsiders the extent to which McClung's enduring legacy of crusading for women's rights is founded on the ideas of British eugenicists such as Francis Galton and Caleb Saleeby and implicated in the passage of eugenical legislation in Canada. In a critical study of Painted Fires, the Pearlie Watson books, and several short stories, Devereux attempts to understand McClung's fiction in terms of its engagement with a politics of 'race' and nation and constructions of specifically 'racial' impurities that many women saw themselves as uniquely able to 'cure.'

- In this landmark interdisciplinary volume, Alexander points to a number of critical imperatives made all the more urgent by contemporary manifestations of neoimperialism and neocolonialism. Among these are the need for North American feminism and queer studies to take up transnational frameworks that foreground questions of colonialism, political economy, and racial formation: for a thorough re-conceptualization of modernity to account for the heteronormative regulatory practices of modern state formations: and for feminists to wrestle with the spiritual dimensions of experience and the meaning of sacred subjectivity.
