- Description
- According to India's 2011 Census, the country's population has increased by 17.6% since 2001. The Census shows that 51.6% of the population is male, while 48.4% is female. Unfortunately, the 2011 Census data also shows that the gender ratio for children below six years has dropped. This decline is unabated since the 1961 Census. This gender bias draws attention to a lingering societal flaw which economic growth has not been able to correct. Gender equality is a constituent of development, as well as an instrument of development. No country can be deemed developed if half of its population is severely disadvantaged in terms of basic needs, livelihood options, access to knowledge, and political voice. India's Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-2012) recognized women, for the first time, not just as equal citizens, but as agents of economic and social growth. It is important to ensure that women are economically, socially, and politically empowered. This book provides an account of the problems faced by Indian women, particularly those belonging to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. It explains the various policies, programs, and schemes initiated by the government of India, in co-operation with other agencies for the welfare, development, and empowerment of women.

- Description
- Murphy describes the twentieth-century rise of infrastructures of calculation and experiment aimed at governing population for the sake of national economy, pinpointing the spread of a potent biopolitical logic: some must not be born so that others might live more prosperously. Resituating the history of postcolonial neoliberal technique in expert circuits between the United States and Bangladesh, Murphy traces the methods and imaginaries through which family planning calculated lives not worth living, lives not worth saving, and lives not worth being born. The resulting archive of data transmuted into financialized “Invest in a Girl” campaigns that reframed survival as a question of human capital.

- Description
- Over the last two decades there have been many new commitments and increasing political rhetoric on gender equality and the realisation of rights for women and girls, but limited real progress in achieving either. This report concludes that this is, in part, because the underlying causes of gender equality have not been addressed and there was insufficient political will to make the changes needed on the ground. Detailed recommendations for concrete action to turn rhetoric into change are outlined throughout the report.

- Description
- 'Twenty years after the adoption of Beijing, this version of the Political Declaration is not what women need. There has been tremendous progress toward gender equality and the realization of the human rights of women and girls. However, many of the gains that women and girls have made are under threat and women and girls worldwide face extraordinary and unprecedented challenges, including economic inequality, climate change and ocean acidification, and rising, violent fundamentalisms. At a time when urgent action is needed to fully realize gender equality, the human rights and empowerment of women and girls, we need renewed commitment, a heightened level of ambition, real resources, and accountability. This Political Declaration, instead, represents a bland reaffirmation of existing commitments that fails to match the level of ambition in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and in fact threatens a major step backward. Includes a list of participants.'
