- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- Description
- In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.

- Description
- This book examines design history from a feminist perspective. It exposes the socially constructed nature of design history, and the assumptions of male designers and architects about women's tastes, women's place and the way women live. And it illuminates women's relationship to design both as designers and those designed for. Women have gained a footholf in pottery and textile design, and predominate in the field of domestic design. Why are they still a minority in the areas of architecture and industrial design? What part does design education play in this exclusion? Contains: Part One: Images of difference : Objectifying gender: the stiletto heel : Representations of women and race in the Lancashire cotton trade : Tarting up men: menswear and gender dynamics : From Alcatraz to the OK Corral: images of class and gender : Part Two: Women as designers : Women textile designers in the 1920s and 1930s: Marion Dorn, a case study : Pottery women: a comparitive study of Susan Vera Cooper and Millicent Jane Taplin : Women architects : Part three: Women in design production : 'If you have no sons' : furniture-making in Britain : Powerful women: electricity in the home, 1919-40, Sexual division of labour in the Arts and Crafts Movement : The Arts and Crafts alternative : The inter-war handicrafts revival : Part four: A place of their own : A view from the interior : The designer housewife in the 1950s : Inside Pram Town: a case study of Harlow House Interiors, 1951-61 : Appendix: Women at the Archive of Art and Design.

- Description
- For South Asians, food regularly plays a role in how issues of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and national identity are imagined. This book provides food for thought as it considers the metaphors literature, film, and TV shows use to describe Indians abroad. When an immigrant mother in Jhumpa Lahiri's 'The Namesake', combines Rice Krispies, Planters peanuts, onions, salt, lemon juice, and green chili peppers to create a dish similar to one found on Calcutta sidewalks, it not only evokes the character's Americanization, but also her nostalgia for India. Food, Anita Mannur writes, is a central part of the cultural imagination of diasporic populations. Mannur examines the cultural production from the Anglo-American reaches of the South Asian diaspora. Using texts from novels - Chitra Divakaruni's 'Mistress of Spices', and Shani Mootoo's 'Cereus Blooms at Night' - to cookbooks such as Madhur Jaffrey's 'Invitation to Indian Cooking' and Padma Lakshmi's 'Easy Exotic', she illustrates how national identities are consolidated in culinary terms.

- This book explores the lives and struggles of two generations of British Asian women to present a political account of their experiences: personal and public, individual and collective, their struggles take on power structures within the family, the community and, on occasion, the British state. From schoolgirls to matriarchs, single mothers to extended families, and businesswomen to factory workers, their life is polarised by class and religion. Combining their personal testimony within a theoretical framework, Amrit Wilson locates their experiences in the wider context of global and regional politics. She examines what impact the feminist movement has had on their lives, and explores issues such as domestic violence, Asian marriages, representations of Asian women, mental disturbance and suicide.

- Girls’ comics were a major genre from the 1950s onwards in Britain. The most popular titles sold between 800,000 and a million copies a week. This genre was slowly replaced by magazines which now dominate publishing for girls. This book explores the genre, looking at how and why this rich history has been forgotten. The research is based around both analysis of what the titles contained and interviews with women about their childhood comic reading. In addition, it also looks at the other comic books that British girls engaged with, including humour comics and superhero titles. In doing so it looks at intersections of class, girlhood, and genre, and puts comic reading into historical, cultural, and educational context.

- By combing over the everyday practices of working-class girls in 1920s and 30s England, including a focus on Bermondsey south-east London and oral testimony from women who grew up in the period, the author demonstrates the persistence and ingenuity with which these teenagers gained access to the commercial leisure culture of the day, from hairstyles and fashionable dress to films, music, and dances. She shows how this access had a startling ripple effect, transforming the way young women rehearsed and contested their identities so that play, rather than work, became the primary mechanism for defining subjectivity and constructing femininity.

Using diverse textual, visual and material culture sources, it shows that masculinities were produced and disseminated through men's bodies - often working-class ones - and the emotions and material culture associated with them. The book analyses idealised men who stimulated desire and admiration, including virile boxers, soldiers, sailors and blacksmiths, brave firemen and noble industrial workers. It also investigates unmanly men, such as drunkards, wife-beaters and masturbators, who elicited disgust and aversion.

- Rebecca Pelan analyzes religion, region, class, and national and ethnic identity as crucial contexts in shaping feminist consciousness in the two Irelands, and compares the divergence of feminist perspectives to be found North and South of the border. The very different histories of the North and South are reflected in their literature. Pelan concentrates primarily on radical fiction produced between 1970 and the middle 1990s, finding that a period in which Irish women's writing proliferated and seems in hindsight to have had an usually cohesive political agenda. After taking in turn writing from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, she surveys the new minefield she finds in the following decade.

Ahluwalia draws attention to the interactive and relational history of Indian birth control by including western activists such as Margaret Sanger and Marie Stopes alongside important Indian campaigners. In revealing the elitist politics of middle-class feminists, Indian nationalists, western activists, colonial authorities and the medical establishment, Ahluwalia finds similatities between these groups in rationalizing procreation and regulating women while invoking competing notions of freedom, femininity, and family.

- Description
- This book opens a window into the lives of British spinsters in the mid-seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries, assessing the opportunities open to them and the restrictions placed upon them within different social classes, occupations, and periods. Hill examines how often spinsters were able to earn enough money to live independently, She looks at the part single women played in religious organisations and the role of friendship and letter-writing in their daily lives. She describes the nature of close relationships between women, some lesbian but many others not. Exploring the spinsters' possibilities of escape from restrictive lives, particularly by emigration or crossdressing, she discusses how successful these were. She provides details about the degree of surveillance single women suffered from the authorities and how often they were seen as a threat to social order. Finally she addresses the question of whether all spinsters of this era were suffering victims or potential viragoes, or neither.

- Description
- This book explores whether the forces of globalization affect the erosion of standard career patterns of mid-career men in twelve OECD countries. Overwhelming evidence against the ‘individualization of inequality’ thesis is provided – it is argued that equality remains largely stratified by factors such as occupational class and educational level, and in some countries has even grown over time. .The contributors illustrate that globalization appears to have influenced the rise of ‘patchwork’ careers in countries where workers have been increasingly less protected by institutional configurations. These countries include Denmark, Mexico, The Netherlands, the UK and the US, as well as post-socialistic countries such as Hungary, Estonia and the Czech Republic. Interestingly, there is no evidence that men’s careers have become more erratic in Italy, Spain, Sweden or Germany. Nation-specific institutions, such as welfare regimes, education and training systems and employment relations remain key factors impacting on job mobility patterns.

- Description
- 'Women in England in the Middle Ages' looks at 'all sorts and conditions' of women from c.500 to c.1500 A.D., concentrating on common experiences over their life-cycle, as daughters, wives and mothers, and the contrasts derived from their position in the social hierarchy. Most women lived out their lives in their own village or town, but queens and noblewomen exercised power and patronage locally and at the royal court. Religion played a significant part in women's lives: some became nuns and abbesses, while the majority were involved in their own parish and community. Inevitably, women's lives changed over time, but, in bringing up their children and balancing family and work, medieval women faced many of the problems of their modern counterparts.

- Description
- As economic citizenship was a pre-condition of full citizenship, the lack of economic autonomy was an important motivation during the early stages of the women's movement. Independent of their class background, women had less access to not only financial resources but also social and cultural capital, i.e., member's commitment. Resources are therefore of particular interest from a gender perspective, and this book sheds light on the importance of resources for women's struggles for political rights. Highlighting the financial strategies of the first wave of Swedish middle-class and socialist women's movements and comparing them with similar organizations in Germany, England, and Canada, the authors show the importance of class, gender, age, and the national context, offering a valuable contribution to the discussion of resource mobilization theories in the context of social movements.
