- In 2017, a routine network television investigation led Farrow, son of actress Mia Farrow and filmmaker Woody Allen. to a story about Harvey Weinstein , protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family. This is the story of the tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse. And it's the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement of metoo.

- With Pulitzer Prize winners Kristof and WuDunn as our guides, readers undertake an odyssey through Africa and Asia to meet extraordinary women, among them a Cambodian teenager sold into sex slavery and an Ethiopian woman who suffered devastating injuries in childbirth. The authors show how a little help can transform the lives of women and girls abroad. That Cambodian girl eventually escaped from her brothel and, with assistance from an aid group, built a thriving retail business that supports her family. The Ethiopian woman had her injuries repaired and in time became a surgeon. A Zimbabwean mother of five, counseled to return to school, earned her doctorate and became an expert on AIDS. Through these stories, Kristof and WuDunn help us see that the key to economic progress lies in unleashing women’s potential. They make clear how so many people have helped to do just that, and how we can each do our part. Throughout much of the world, the greatest unexploited economic resource is the female half of the population.

- Description
- A collection of writings on how the structures of power have exerted systematic governance over women in Africa. It addresses how the rhetorical devices of tradition and modernity have played important roles in the control and appropriation of African women's bodies. The chapters draw on history, literature, political science, journalism, sociology, comparative studies, and women and gender studies to offer multidisciplinary perspectives from which to understand the diversity of women's experiences, gender issues, and sexualities as they intersect with class, race, ethnicity, and nationality. This volume not only shows how the macro-narratives of colonialism and post-colonialism provide frameworks for understanding the micro-narratives of empowerment and disempowerment of women, but also considers resistance strategies women have used to guard against the subjugation of their bodies and sexualities. Themes covered include constructions of African motherhood and womanhood, femininity and health, gender and sexual representations and contestations, and gendered nationalism and culture.

- This book presents a disturbing picture of non-consensual sex among children and young adults in developing countries. It documents a range of non-consensual experiences--from unwanted touch to forced penetrative sex and gang rape--and sheds light on the experience of young males as both victims and perpetrators, and the unsupportive and sometimes abusive roles of families, teachers, health care providers and law enforcement agents. It argues for a radical review and reform of programs designed to prevent abuse and support survivors.

- This book reconsiders a reliance on the criminal justice system for solving women’s struggles with domestic violence: acknowledge how militarism subjects women to extreme levels of violence perpetrated from within, and without, their communities: recognize how the medical establishment inflicts violence—such as involuntary sterilization and inadequate health care—on women of color: devise new strategies for cross-cultural dialogue, theorizing and alliance building. .INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence was born in 2000, when more than two thousand activists from diverse communities came together to end the war being waged on women of color in the US and around the world. Now the largest multiracial, grassroots, feminist organization in the United States, INCITE! boasts chapters in more than 20 cities.

- In traditional historical and scholarly accounts of the making and fighting of wars, women are often nowhere to be seen. War stories are told as if men were the only ones who plan, fight, are injured by, and negotiate ends to wars. As this book tells, women can be found at every turn in the (gendered) phenomena of war. Women have participated in the making, fighting, and concluding of wars throughout history, and their participation is only increasing at the turn of the 21st century. Women experience war in multiple ways: as soldiers, as fighters, as civilians, as caregivers, as sex workers, as sexual slaves, refugees and internally displaced persons, as anti-war activists, as community peace-builders, and more.

- Description
- Gender-based violence affects every society in the world, and represents a significant impediment to development. Anyone can be a victim of violence on the grounds of their gender identity, but it is predominantly women and girls whose lives are limited by its effects. This volume explores the wide variety of forms that gender-based violence can take, including violence that occurs within marriage, during fuel collection and forced evictions, and at school, and the impact that this violence can have on the capacity of victims to support themselves and enjoy their full rights as human beings. The authors also present examples of successful policy, ranging from lobbying for better legal and police protection for victims, to working with men and boys to combat the underlying gender stereotypes and expectations which legitimize gender-based violence against women.

- The author says that because the pattern of abuse and cover-up was so similar across the world, there is something fundamentally awry with Church traditions and power structures in relationship to sexuality and sexual abuse. Specifically, in chapters on suffering and sadomasochism, bodies and gender, desire and sexuality, celibacy and homosexuality, the author concludes that aspects of the Catholic theology of sexuality set the stage for the abuse of minors and its cover-up. She also analyzes the American bishops' lack of pastoral care and tendency towards clerical narcissism as central factors in the scandal.

- Heightened awareness of the problem of sexual abuse has led to deep anxiety over adults touching children—in nearly any context. Though our society has moved toward increasingly strict enforcement of this taboo, studies have shown that young children need regular human contact, and the benefits of breastfeeding have been widely extolled. Exploring the complicated history of love, desire, gender, sexuality, parenthood, and inequality, The bookt probes the issue of how we can draw a clear line between natural affection toward children and perverse exploitation of them. The author demonstrates that we cannot determine what is wrong about sexual abuse without first understanding what is good about appropriate sensual affection. Pondering topics such as the importance of touch in nurturing children, the psychology of abuse and victimhood, and recent ideologies of motherhood, she argues that we must expand our philosophical and theological language of physical love and make a distinction between sexual love and erotic love.

She describes the impact of the abuses inflicted on Native American children at state-sanctioned boarding schools from the 1880s to the 1980s: the widespread appropriation of Indian cultural practices by whites and other non-Natives: environmental racism: and population control. Smith connects these and other examples of historical and contemporary colonialism to the high rates of violence against Native American women-as a group.

- An estimated 35 million people worldwide are displaced by conflict, and most of them are women and children. During their time away from their homes and communities, these women and their children are subjected to a horrifying array of misfortune, including privations of every kind, sexual assaults, disease, imprisonment, unwanted pregnancies, severe psychological trauma, and, upon return or resettlement, social disapproval and isolation. .This collection brings these problems - and potential solutions - into sharp focus. Based on field research and a broad knowledge of other studies of the challenges facing women who are forced from their homes and homelands by conflict, this book offers understanding and problem-solving ideas.

- In this volume, human rights advocates and scholars argue that the memory of trauma is gendered and that women's voices and perspectives are key to our understanding of the dynamics that emerge in the context of genocidal violence. The genocides of modern history such as Rwanda, Armenia, the Holocaust and their effects have been well documented, but how do the experiences of female victims and perpetrators differ from those of men? Examined is how women consistently are targets for the sexualized violence that serves as an instrument of ethnic cleansing, how female perpetrators take advantage of the new power structures, and how women are involved in the struggle for justice in post-genocidal contexts. By focusing on women, the book helps to understand the relationship between misogyny and violence in societies where genocide erupts.

- The essays in this book reveal the diverse ways black women experience and represent sexuality. The contributors highlight the range of tactics that black women use to express their sexual desires and identities. .The authors take not only an interdisciplinary approach, but also an intergenerational one, in conversation with the foremothers of black feminist studies. In addition, the book explores a diverse archive of representations, covering everything from blues to hip-hop, from Crash to Precious, from Sister Souljah to Edwidge Danticat. Revealing that black female sexuality is anything but a black-and-white issue, this collection demonstrates how to appreciate a whole spectrum of subjectivities, experiences, and desires.

- This book explores the cultural understanding of actors, agents and structures of war and how can we make sense of attitudes towards women, agency and war today. Ahall argues that all types of stories are informed by ideas about motherhood and maternal reproduction as the foundation of sexual difference. This does not only mean that women are judged based on the shape of their, maternalised, bodies, rather than what they actually do, but, it means that ideas about motherhood function to police contemporary gender norms and contemporary understandings of agency in war. This book argues that maternalist war stories function to reiterate traditional heteronormative gender roles. The body politics of war told through maternalist war stories is a process in which the sexing of war means the policing of gender borders, with motherhood acting as the border agent.

- During the Asia-Pacific War, the Japanese military forced hundreds of thousands of women across Asia into 'comfort stations' where they were repeatedly raped and tortured. Japanese imperial forces claimed they recruited women to join these stations in order to prevent the mass rape of local women and the spread of venereal disease among soldiers. In reality, these women were kidnapped and coerced into sexual slavery. This book features the personal narratives of twelve women forced into sexual slavery when the Japanese military occupied their hometowns. Beginning with their prewar lives and continuing through their enslavement to their postwar struggles for justice, the interviews reveal that the prolonged suffering of the survivors was not contained to wartime atrocities but was a lifelong condition resulting from various social, political, and cultural factors.

Drawing upon a range of contemporary criminal law theorists and feminist scholars, this publication reconsiders the nature of mutuality in a world dominated by gender norms, the proper scope of criminal law, and the true meaning of sexual autonomy.

- Description
- This ethnography analyzes female agency, gendered violence, and transactional sex in contemporary Papua New Guinea. Focusing on Huli 'passenger women,' (women who accept money for sex) it explores the socio-economic factors that push women into the practice of transactional sex, and asks how these transactions might be an expression of resistance, or even revenge. Challenging conventional understandings of 'prostitution' and 'sex work,' Holly Wardlow contextualizes the actions and intentions of passenger women in an analysis of kinship, bridewealth, marriage, and exchange, revealing the ways in which these robust social institutions are transformed by an encompassing capitalist economy.
