- Description
- This volume reflects the potential of a new perspective that allows for a more adequate analysis of transnational activities, by looking at the lives and work of women’s activists in informal border-crossings, ephemeral NGOs, the lower management of established international organizations, and other global networks. By pointing out cultural hierarchies, the vicissitudes of translation and re-interpretation, and the ambiguity of intercultural exchange, this volume demonstrates the potential of transnational history. Chapter 1. Understanding international feminisms as ‘transnational’ – an anachronism? May Wright Sewall and the creation of the International Council of Women, 1889 to 1904 / Karen Offen: Chapter 2. A forgotten instance of women’s international organizing. The national councils of women in France, Italy and Portugal. Comparisons and entanglements 1888-1939 / Anne Cova: Chapter 4. The republican and utopian politics of Frances Wright (1795–1852) / Jane Rendall: Chapter 7. What is a transnational life? - Description
- This book explores the history of marriage and marriage-like relationships across five continents from the seventeenth century to the present day. Scholars examine how the methodologies from the new history of emotions contribute to our understanding of marriage, seeking to uncover not only personal feeling but also the political and social implications of emotion. They highlight how marriage as an institution has been shaped not just by law and society but also by individual and community choices, desires and emotional values.

- Description
- In 1843 on the island of Tahiti the evangelical missionary Rev. Alexander Simpson was accused of sexually assaulting female students under his care. The events did not come out in public for at least a decade, while Simpson's power in the local community only grew and rumblings relating to his wrong-doings were ruthlessly 'crushed'. By exploring the case of Rev. Simpson, the author gives us insights into the gender, power and racial dynamics of a particular case of sexual abuse on the frontiers of European colonialism. She explores the social and sexual context of clerical abuse, considers the hierarchies of gender and power that determined how the case was handled, and investigates the nature of colonialism, gender and abuse in the 19th century.

- Description
- This collection of essays explores the cultural meanings of women leaving home. The volume aims to put the narrative element of home-leaving into a European context by investigating travel in various directions: from England to somewhere abroad, from the (former) colonies to the (former) imperial centre or simply within a psychic space. The female figures discussed in the volume leave home for various reasons - to go into exile, to challenge orthodox conceptions of femininity, to travel for pleasure or out of curiosit. The essays in this collection focus on how the cross-cultural encounters implicated in discourses of race, gender, nation and religion affect female identity. The 'protagonists' of these narratives range from mythical heroines to early modern Protestant refugees to fictitious and historical figures from the past 200 years. like Saartjie Baartman. The discussion throughout is informed by contemporary theories of gender, literary and cultural studies.

- Description
- In a reinterpretation of the years between 1620 and 1763, the author argues how ideas about gender and family life were central to the ways people in colonial New England, and their neighbors in New France and Indian Country, described their experiences in cross-cultural warfare. Little argues that English, French, and Indian people had broadly similar ideas about gender and authority. Because they understood both warfare and political power to be intertwined expressions of manhood, colonial warfare may be understood as a contest of different styles of masculinity.

- Description
- Theories of intersectionality have fundamentally transformed how feminists and critical race scholars understand the relationship between race and gender, but are often limited in their focus on contemporary experiences of interlocking oppressions. In this book Kitch explores the 'backstory' of intersectionality theory: the historical formation of the racial and gendered hierarchies that continue to structure U.S. culture today. Kitch uses a genealogical approach to explore how a world already divided by gender ideology became one simultaneously obsessed with judgmental ideas about race, starting in Europe and the English colonies in the late seventeenth century. Through an examination of religious, political, and scientific narratives, public policies and testimonies, laws, court cases, and newspaper accounts, this book provides a comparative study of the racial formation and reveals gendered patterns that have served white racial dominance and repeated themselves with variations over a two-hundred-year period.
