- Women represent a slight majority of Quebec's population, yet they continue to occupy a minority of seats in its National Assembly and in Canada's House of Commons and Senate. To explain why this is the author examines Quebec women's political engagements from 1791 to the present. She traces the path that led to women obtaining the rights to vote and run for office and then draws on statistics and interviews with female politicians to paint an indepth portrait of women's underrepresentation and its main causes. Her account not only documents the democratic deficit in Canada's parliamentary systems, it also outlines strategies to improve women's access to legislative representation in Canada and elsewhere.

- Description
- The volume looks at the past and the present of European citizenship, and, by implication, its future. The aim of the investigation is theoretical and practical. It is based on the conviction that knowledge is essential for decision making, political or otherwise: and that more knowledge is needed to make decisions about European citizenship. Attitudes towards such vital political and ethical issues as ‘citizenship’ are commonly based on general impressions and opinions, rather than on a critically-founded understanding. As historians and specialists in other social and human sciences, we believe it is our duty to contribute to the common patrimony of understanding and insight, so that informed citizens can make informed decisions. One part of the book is called Work, gender and society. it contains the articles from Waaldijk, Laikos and Hageman.

- Description
- Overview of women’s role and place in western Europe, from the beginning of the eighteenth century until the twentieth century. Chapters focus on women's work, sexuality, the family, education and training, religion, political participation, war and peace, popular culture and leisure, and women as producers and consumers of art. The interaction between women, ideology and female agency, the way women engaged with patriarchal and gendered structures and systems, and the way women carved out their identities and spaces within these informs each of the studies.

- Description
- Beginning with an analysis of Aristotle's notion of political friendship, Schwarzenbach brings the philosopher's insights to bear on the social and political requirements of the modern state. She elaborates a conception of civic friendship that, with its ethical reproductive praxis, functions differently from male-centered notions of fraternity and, with its female participants, remains fundamentally separate from generalized, male-inflected claims of Marxist solidarity. Schwarzenbach also distinguishes civic friendship from feminist calls for public care, arguing that friendship, unlike care, not only is reciprocal but also seeks to establish and maintain equality. .Schwarzenbach concludes with various public institutions-economic, legal, and social-that can promote civic friendship without sacrificing crucial liberties. In fact, women's entrance into the public sphere en masse makes such ideals realistic within a competitive, individualistic society.

- Description

- Description
- The eight essays collected in this volume examine the practice of gender history and its impact on the understanding of European history. Each essay takes up a methodological or theoretical issue in feminist history and argues the necessity of critiquing and redefining the concepts of body, citizenship, class and experience through historical case studies. The author argues how gender history has revised narratives in some fields within modern European history (such as the French Revolution) but has had a lesser impact in others (Weimar and Nazi Germany).

- Description
- Theories of intersectionality have fundamentally transformed how feminists and critical race scholars understand the relationship between race and gender, but are often limited in their focus on contemporary experiences of interlocking oppressions. In this book Kitch explores the 'backstory' of intersectionality theory: the historical formation of the racial and gendered hierarchies that continue to structure U.S. culture today. Kitch uses a genealogical approach to explore how a world already divided by gender ideology became one simultaneously obsessed with judgmental ideas about race, starting in Europe and the English colonies in the late seventeenth century. Through an examination of religious, political, and scientific narratives, public policies and testimonies, laws, court cases, and newspaper accounts, this book provides a comparative study of the racial formation and reveals gendered patterns that have served white racial dominance and repeated themselves with variations over a two-hundred-year period.

- Description
- The volume seeks to investigate the importance of women's relationship with citizenship and nationality, based on an analysis of writings in various European contexts, from the 17th century to the present. The essays show that women’s writing has helped to re-shape traditional concepts of the nation and explore the history of cross-cultural identities. Among the themes discussed are: the construction of female identity through religious ideology, the importance of translation and cultural studies as a source of feminine knowledge, and the relationship between public life and private domain within the multiculturalism of Europe.
