- Description
- This book is based on over 100 oral histories gathered from women from a variety of racial, ethnic, and geographical backgrounds. Buss analyzes this body of work, identifying common themes in women's lives and resistance that unite the oral histories she has gathered. From the beginning, her work has shed light on the inseparable, compounding effects of gender, race, ethnicity, and class on women's lives, what is now commonly called intersectionality. The book is structured thematically, with each chapter analyzing a concept that runs through the oral histories, e.g., agency, activism, religion.

- Description
- On April 26th 2015, when radical Islamist opposition forces in Syria announced the 'Great Attack' on Aleppo, young women of various ethnicities and religions backgrounds sought refuge in Le Pont gallery. They were mostly former participants of Art Camping, a collaborative art project initiated by Le Pont in responsive to the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in Aleppo in 2012. This book documents the photo sessions Issa Touma, photographer and director of the gallery, held at Le Pont during the week of the 'Great Attack', like a last message from Aleppo. It tells the story of a group of girls in their customary dressing, stating their fears during the crises, scared about losing either their life or lifestyle.

- Dickens writes about the life, works and thought of twelve leading women mystics, from 11th Century Richeldis of Faverches to 16th Century Teresa of Avila. For the widely known (Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich, and Hildegard of Bingen) as well as the less studied (Angela of Foligno, Richeldis of Faverches, and Mechtilde of Hackeborn) matters of love, location, authority, pilgrimage, and anti-clericalism are common themes. In these pages the mystical texts emerge as distinctively female, though open-endedly so, and as a vital communication of the rich, multi-faceted world of medieval Europe.

- Description
- Josephine Butler, 1828-1906 spearheaded campaigns against state regulation of prostitution. A gifted platform speaker, she enthused a variety of British and European audiences, and wrote abundantly about her cause. Contributors revisit Butler after the end of the twentieth century, where she has been fêted, forgotten, and then rediscovered as reformer, mystic, and feminist. Firmly locating Butler within her context, the book breaks new ground by focusing on the role of religion in her life and work, and on Butler as (auto)biographer, writing her own self as she writes her campaign.

- Slavery in the history of the United States continues to loom large in American national consciousness, and the role of women in this chapter of the American past is largely under-examined. This encyclopedia focuses on the daily experiences and roles of female slaves in the United States, from colonial times to official abolition provided by the 13th amendment to the Constitution in 1865. The book contains 100 entries written by a range of experts and covering all aspects of daily life. Topics include culture, family, health, labor, resistance, and violence. Arranged alphabetically by entry, this look at history features life histories of lesser-known African American women, including Harriet Robinson Scott, the wife of Dred Scott, as well as more notable figures.

- This book offers essays by black women writers on moments that strongly influenced their careers. The anthology provides a overview of the formal concerns and thematic issues facing contemporary black women writers. Editor Joanne Veal Gabbin offers an introduction that places these writers in the context of American literature in general and African American literature in particular. Each essay includes a headnote summarizing the writer's career and aesthetic development. In their pieces these women negotiate educational institutions and societal restrictions and find their voices despite racism, sexism, and religious chauvinism. They offer strong testimony to the power of words to heal, transform, and renew.

- This earliest known work in Islam devoted entirely to women's spirituality was written by the Persian Sufi Abu 'Abd ar-Rahman as-Sulami. The long-lost text provides portraits of 80 Sufi women who lived in the central Islamic lands between the 8th and 11th centuries C.E. As spiritual masters and exemplars of Islamic piety, they served as respected teachers and guides in the same way as did Muslim men, often surpassing men in their understanding of Sufi doctrine, the Qur'an, and Islamic spirituality. This bilingual edition includes pages from 10th-century manuscript.

- Description
- The experience of women in the nineteenth century has generated a lot of research in recent decades. This book presents recent scholarship available in a concise resource, providing thus an authoritative source of information and interpretation. The authors emphasize areas in which scholars have identified important changes (such as suffrage and reform), topics in which researchers are now making great strides (such as racial, ethnic, religious, and regional diversity), and innovative and relatively recent explorations (for example, work on female sexuality). Accessible overview articles and alphabetical encyclopedia-like entries are combined in a comprehensive volume. .Part 1 contains a historiographical essay followed by a ten-chapter narrative overview. These chapters include discussions of families and households, labor and the workforce, religion and morality, feminism and equal rights, reform and voluntarism, and more. Part 2 is an A-to-Z listing of concise entries on key terms, notable figures, political movements, social and religious organizations, and legislation.

- At the beginning of the 18th Century, the Ottoman Empire remained the most powerful of Middle Eastern Empires. One often overlooked aspect was the role of powerful women, often the head of the harem, or wives or mothers of Sultans. These educated patrons left a great array of buildings across the Ottoman lands: powerful palaces and mausoleums, but also essential works for ordinary citizens, such as bridges and waterworks. Gulnus Sultan for example, the head of the imperial harem under Mehmed IV and mother to his sons, was often pictured on horseback, and travelled widely across the Middle East commissioning architects and craftsmen as she went. Her buildings were personal projects designed to showcase Ottoman power and they were built from Constantinople to Mecca, from modern-day Ukraine to Algeria.
