- Description
- This book contests the idea that Europe developed within clear-cut geographical boundaries. It examines how experiences of colonialism and imperialism continue to be constitutive of the European space and of the very idea of Europe. By approaching Europe as a complex political space, the chapters investigate topical concerns around its politics of inclusion and exclusion towards migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, as well as its take on internal conflicts, transitions and cosmopolitan imaginaries.

- Description
- This book takes on fundamental questions at the intersections of gender, sexuality, and the body. Several questions frame the volume: How does studying gender and sexuality expand and enrich our understanding of Muslim-majority countries, historically and at present? How does the embodiment of ’Muslim’ identity get reconfigured in the context of twenty-first-century globalism? What analytical questions are raised about ’Islam’ when its diverse meanings and multifaceted expressions are closely examined? What roles do gender and sexuality play in the construction of cultural, religious, nationalistic, communal, and militaristic identities? How have power struggles been signified in and on the bodies of women and sexuality?

- Description
- This book presents an overview of current research into constructs of gender, the role of religion and the importance of situation, and looks closely at what Islam has to say about women's participation in sport and what Muslim women have to say about their participation in sport. It highlights the challenges and opportunities for women in sport in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries, utilising a series of case-studies in various countries. Material on Iraq, Palestine and Bosnia and Herzegovina provides insights into the impact of war on sporting activities for women. The book also seeks to make recommendations for improving access to sport for girls and women from Muslim communities.

- Description
- This book provides an overview of the gender rules encountered in Europe in the period between approximately 500 and 1500 C.E. The essays speak to how best to uncover the experiences of ordinary people from archives formed mainly by and about elite males, and how to combine social histories of lived experiences with cultural histories of gendered discourses and identities. The collection focuses on Western Europe in the Middle Ages but offers some consideration of medieval Islam and Byzantium.

- This collection explores the impact of religion on the formation of men and masculinities in twentieth-century Britain. Religion is explored beyond the traditional boundaries of church worship and institutional structures to encompass the diverse cultures of male sexuality, home life, war, work, immigration, leisure and sectarian politics. Issues of change, such as the decline of single-sex associational settings, the theological shifts and changing fortunes of sects, the varying visibility of queer and homosexual cultures, and the shifting boundaries and collapsing distinctions between clergy and laypeople are explored in depth.

- This volume builds on existing scholarship on representations of the breast, the iconography of the Madonna Lactans, allegories of abundance, nature, and charity, women mystics' food-centered practices of devotion, the ubiquitous practice of wet-nursing, and medical theories of conception. It is informed by studies on queer kinship in early modern Europe, notions of sacred eroticism in pre-tridentine Catholicism, feminist investigations of breastfeeding as a sexual practice, and by anthropological and historical scholarship on milk exchange and ritual kinship in ancient Mediterranean and medieval Islamic societies.

They try to answer the question what impact will religion have on the European secular worldand how social and economic transitions on a transnational scale challenge ethnic and religious identifications. The new European multiculturalism calls into question the nature of boundaries between various ethnic-religious groups, as well as the demarcation lines within ethnic-religious communities.

- 9/11 is not simple a date on the calendar but marks a distinct historical threshold, ushering in the war on terror and a supposed “clash of civilizations. Perhaps no date, since Virginia Woolf declared that “on or about December 1910 human character changed,” has marked such a singular point in the perception of time, identity and nature. Women’s writing has always been something of a counter-canon, offering modes of voice and point of view beyond that of the “man” of reason. This collection of essays explores the two problems of what it means to write as a woman and what it means to write in the twenty-first century.

This book highlights the broader sources of authority that affected the emergence of new feminist actors and agents and their impact on the sociopolitical landscapes of the region.

- The acceptance of female leadership in mosques is a significant change from much historical practice, signalling the mainstream acceptance of some form of female Islamic authority in many places. This book investigates the range of female religious leadership present in contemporary Muslim communities in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Netherlands and North America. Authors discuss its emergence, the limitations placed upon it, and its wider impact, as well as the physical and virtual spaces used by women to establish and consolidate their authority.

Bringing together a series of short case studies drawn from new ethnographic fieldwork, its subjects range from the experiences of working-class men in Putins Russia to colonial masculinities in Southern Rhodesia, and from young British Muslim men to amateur footballers in Jamaica.

- The book addresses the challenges faced by women on the two shores of the Mediterranean. While in the European Union’s Mediterranean countries inequality is mostly linked to the social sphere and in particular refers to labour market dynamics, in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) area the social and private spheres are blended and cultural and religious factors have a great impact on women autonomy and opportunities beyond the family perimeter. The chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue of the Journal of the Balkans and Near Eastern Studies.

- This book examines the issues and controversies that are debated when it comes to the concept of feminism and gender in Arab society today. It offers explorations of the theoretical issues, the latest developments of feminist discourse, literary studies and sociology, as well as empirical data concerning the situation of women in Arab countries, such as Iraq and Palestine. Iin many countries of the Arab World- particularly Palestine, Iraq and Lebanon, as well as Sudan- issues of war, civil conflict, military occupation and imperialism often override those of gender. The place of feminism in this context is extremely problematic, as nationalist, religious and class interests supersede feminism as a public concern, even among many women. Arab feminists are thus either co-opted by these interests or find themselves in the frustrating position of negotiating their way through a minefield of contradictory imperatives and loyalties.

- In promising women equal citizenship rights and promoting gender equality, Turkey's recent welfare reforms appear to address fundamental problems-the patriarchal system limits women's lives to their roles as wives and mothers, and their labor to informal and unskilled sectors. Yet these policies, guided by the process of accession to the European Union, have conflicting outcomes for women. The reforms sweep away historic support structures and deem women 'equal citizens' without adequate interventions in legal and social frameworks, thus increasing their vulnerability. The AKP's neo-liberal policies and rising Islamic movements further weaken the reform process.

The work pulls together a range of disciplines and themes in motherhood studies: the effects of globalization, HIV/AIDS, welfare reform, politicians as mothers, third wave feminism, and the evolving motherhood movement.

The essays address the gender-specific ways in which rights-based protocols have been analyzed and legislated in the past and the present and the implications for women and men in various social and geographical locations. Questions addressed include: What are the gendered assumptions and effects of the dominance of rights-based discourses for claims to social justice? What kinds of opportunities and limitations does such a 'culture of rights' provide to seekers of justice, whether individuals or collectives, and how are these gendered? How and why do female bodies often become the site of contention in contexts pitting cultural against juridical perspectives?

- The traditional Islamic boarding schools known as pesantren are crucial centres of Muslim learning and culture within Indonesia. This book explores understandings of gender and Islam in pesantren and Sufi orders in Indonesia. It demonstrates how, as Muslim women rise to positions of power and authority in this patriarchal domain, they challenge and negotiate 'normative' Muslim patriarchy while establishing their own Muslim 'authenticity.' The book goes on to question the comparison of Indonesian Islam with the Arab Middle East, challenging the adoption of expatriate and diasporic Middle Eastern Muslim feminist discourses and secular western feminist analyses in Indonesian contexts.

- Description
- The book is focused on intersectionality between gender, race and disability and the question of whether this intersection can be adequately addressed in (EU) law. The discussion rests on two basic assumptions. First, the multiplication of 'discrimination grounds' in EU law and other legal regimes should not result in a dilution of the demands of equality law. Accordingly, the book focuses on the three key grounds - race, gender and disability.. Second, any multi-ground non-discrimination law framework needs to engage with the question of discrimination on several grounds.
