- Description
- Offering a perspective on the constitutional text and record of multiple jurisdictions, from long-established to newly emerging democracies this book portrays a profound shift in our understanding of what constitutions stand for and what they do. Its central insight is that democratic constitutions must serve the needs and aspirations of all the people, and constitutional legitimacy requires opportunities for participation in both the fashioning and functioning of a country's constitution.

- Description
- This book explores the extent to which gendered approaches are evident and effective in spatial development in selected European countries. Beginning with an introduction to theories and concepts of gender, space and development, the book includes a brief historical review of gender in spatial planning and development throughout Europe in general, and an overview of different national frameworks in European countries, comparing legal, organisational and cultural similarities and differences. This is followed by a reflection on how simplifications and stereotypes of gender concepts are used in the practice of spatial development. The main part of the book offers a transnational discussion of planning practices on selected thematic topics. It starts with gender-sensitivity in urban master planning and at neighbourhood level referring to different types of planning manuals. Furthermore, the book focuses on gender-sensitive evaluation in urban planning as well as international agendas for sustainable development as a framework for a new generation of gender equality policies.

- Description
- This book re-evaluates and extends understandings about how work was conceived and what it could entail for women in the premodern period in Europe from c. 1100 to c. 1800. It does this by building on the growth in literature on women’s working experiences, and by adopting new interpretive approaches that expand received assumptions about what constituted 'work' for women.

- Description
- What is the relative importance of different inequalities for policymaking? Should they all be protected similarly, or are some different and deserving of wider protection? The last decade has seen a steady move away from policy approaches that address different inequalities separately and a move towards an integrated approach to multiple inequalities. This collection maps the ways in which multiple inequalities are being addressed institutionally in Europe, and identifies the changing patterns of institutionalization. Using country-based and region-specific case studies it offers a comparative analysis of the multidimensional equality regimes that are emerging in Europe, and analyses the potential that these have for 'institutionalizing intersectionality'.

- Description
- This book is a theory-building and comparative exercise in concepts commonly used to analyze the broad impacts of gender quotas. The book begins with the argument that the means by which women enter politics may influence how their presence affects political representation. Following a preface by Drude Dahlerup, the editors introduce the book with a framework for analyzing the impact of quotas, based upon descriptive, substantive and symbolic dimensions of representation. The book is organized into three sections, each devoted to analyzing one of the dimensions of representation, and each of these sections contains a chapter case study from one of four regions of the world (Western Europe, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia).

- Description
- Through three neo-institutionalist lenses—historical, sociological and discursive—contributors investigate two aspects of the processes of adoption or opposition of equal recognition of same-sex partnerships. First, the book discusses the way in which claims by LGBTIQ movements are being framed politically and brought to parliamentary politics. Then the contributors explore the ways in which same-sex marriage becomes institutionalized (or resisted) through legal and societal norms and practices. The book incorporates a broad range of perspectives, including scholarship on social movements, LGBTI rights, heterosexuality and social norms and gender and politics, illustrated by international case studies.
