- Description
- In this volume, human rights advocates and scholars argue that the memory of trauma is gendered and that women's voices and perspectives are key to our understanding of the dynamics that emerge in the context of genocidal violence. The genocides of modern history such as Rwanda, Armenia, the Holocaust and their effects have been well documented, but how do the experiences of female victims and perpetrators differ from those of men? Examined is how women consistently are targets for the sexualized violence that serves as an instrument of ethnic cleansing, how female perpetrators take advantage of the new power structures, and how women are involved in the struggle for justice in post-genocidal contexts. By focusing on women, the book helps to understand the relationship between misogyny and violence in societies where genocide erupts.

- Collection of articles discussing gender, with examples of gender constructive processes within various contexts and by means of diverse methodologies. It addresses issues such as gender performativity, its variances depending on their historical, social and cultural contexts and the rituals, representations and institutions involved in gender performances. It demonstrates that it is impossible to consider gender as a fixed biological trait. The authors propose to look at gender performance as an ongoing process in which femininities and masculinities imply dynamic intersections with categories such as nationality, ethnicity, class, sexuality and age. With cases from South Africa, United States and Brazil.

While in the European Union’s Mediterranean countries inequality is mostly linked to the social sphere and in particular refers to labour market dynamics, in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) area the social and private spheres are blended and cultural and religious factors have a great impact on women autonomy and opportunities beyond the family perimeter. The chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue of the Journal of the Balkans and Near Eastern Studies.

First it answers whether the concept of a 'gendered state' is generic or if some states are particularly gendered in their identities and interests and with what implications for the type of citizenship, society and international security. Second it looks at the theoretical significance of the gendered state for current IR scholarship. Finally it explains to what extent postcolonial states are distinctive from metropolitan states with regard to gender. .

Authors reflect on the use of hair in popular culture, such as children’s television and pop album artwork, as well as in work by women artists. Studies examine the lived experiences of women from a range of backgrounds and histories, including curly-haired women in Israel, African American women and lesbians in France. Other essays interrogate the connotations of women’s head hair in relation to body image, religion and aging.

- The end of socialism in the Soviet Union and its satellite states ushered in a new era of choice. But personal choice is limited by a range of factors such as a person’s economic situation, class, age, government policies and social expectations, especially regarding gender roles. The notion of free choice is a crucial feature of capitalist ideology and can be manipulated in the interests of the market. This collection explores the complexity of choice in Russia and Ukraine. The contributors explore how the new choices available to people have interacted with and influenced gender identities and gender and how choice has become one of the driving forces of class-formation in countries which were, in the Soviet era, supposedly classless.
