- Description
- Carlson compares the dynasty of the writers Wollstonecraft, Godwin and Shelley to a family. Their works and lives influence each other. The book includes chapters on the writers' efforts to rewrite the sentiments and literary conventions associated with family life, their sentiments and opinions on life and death, their embrace of fancy, the texts they wrote on and for children. The political theories and novels of Wollstonecraft and Godwin are considered to reform love to make it more conductive to the autonomy of women and men. With an epilogue 'On Percy's case'.

- Description
- By the time Ian Watt published The Rise of the Novel in 1957, it was clear that many women novelists before Jane Austen had been overlooked in critical studies of literature and that some of them had been completely forgotten by the reading public. In this book, Brian Corman explores the question of how and why this came about. Corman provides a systematic survey of the reputations of early women novelists as canons of the novel developed over a period of roughly two hundred years, and, in doing so, suggests reasons for their frequent exclusion. Women Novelists before Jane Austen challenges the view that exclusion from the canon was a simple function of gender and goes deeper to examine potential reasons why certain women writers were overlooked. In the process, it provides an overview of histories of the British novel from the beginning through to the mid twentieth century, ending with the publication of Watt's famous text. Further, Corman offers a prolegomenon to the important recovery work of the late twentieth century, in which many revised accounts of the history of the novel appeared.

- Description
- This book explores how the publication of women's life writing influenced the reputation of its writers and of the genre itself during the nineteenth century. It provides case studies of Frances Burney, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Robinson and Mary Hays, four writers whose names were caught up in debates about the moral and literary respectability of publishing the 'private' through diaries, lettes, memoirs and (auto)biography. Focusing on gender, genre and authorship, this study examines key works of life writing by and about these women, the reception of these texts in essays, reviews, fiction, poetry and other life writing, qualitative and quantitative data like prints runs, circulation figures, pricing and reprinting patterns. The book examines: Diary and letters of Madame D'Arblay (1842-1846) / Frances Burney : Letters written during a short residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (1796) / Mary Wollstonecraft : Memoirs of the author of a Vindication of the rights of woman (1798) / William Godwin : Memoirs (1801) / Mary Robinson : Female biography (1803) / Mary Hay : (Coda:) Common Reader / Viriginia Woolf (1925, 1932).

- Description

- Description

- Description
- Princesses are significant figures in girls’ culture in the United States and around the world. This anthology brings together international and interdisciplinary perspectives on the multitude of princess cultures, continuously redrawn and recast by grownups and girls from the Ancien Régime to the New Millennium. Essays critically examine the gendered, racialized, classed, and ethnic meanings of royal figures and fairytale and pop culture princesses inscribed in folk tales, movies, cartoons, video games, dolls, and imitated in play and performance. Focusing on the representation and reception of the princess in western and non-western ideologies, this collection examines the position of princess cultures mediating the lives, imaginations, and identities of girls from toddlers to teenagers - and beyond.
