- Description
- Monter sketches Europe's increasing acceptance of autonomous female rulers between the late Middle Ages and the French Revolution. He surveys the governmental records of Europe's thirty women monarchs—the famous (Mary Stuart, Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great) as well as the obscure (Charlotte of Cyprus, Isabel Clara Eugenia of the Netherlands)—describing how each of them achieved sovereign authority, wielded it, and (more often than men) abandoned it. Monter argues that Europe's female kings, who ruled by divine right, experienced no significant political opposition despite their gender.

- How relevant does gender remain to premodern history in the twenty-first century? This book considers this question in eight case studies that span the European continent from 1400 to 1800. An introductory essay examines the category of gender in historiography and specifically within premodern historiography, as well as the issue of source material for historians of the period.

- Description
- This publication highlights how, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, European women, as readers and writers, contributed to the construction of national identities. The book, which presents twenty countries, is divided into four parts. First, it examines how women belonged to nations: they represented territories and political or religious communities in their own style. Second, it deals with the ways in which women wrote the nation: the network of relationships in which they were involved that were not necessarily national or territorial. The legitimation that women writers succeeded in finding is emphasised in the third section, while in the fourth is analysed how and why women were open to the outside world, beyond the country's borders.

- Description
- This book offers an analysis of case studies on family violence between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, using court records as their main source. It raises questions for research on early modern Europe: the notion of absolute power: sovereignty and its applicability to familial power: the problem of violence and the possibility of its usage for conflict resolution both in public and private spaces: and the interconnection of gender and violence against women, reconsidered in the context of modern state formation as a public sphere and family building as a private sphere. Contributors bring together studies of domestic violence and spousal murder in Romania, England, and Russia, abduction and forced marriage in Poland, infanticide and violence against parents in Finland, and rape and violence against women in Germany.

- Description
- This volume surveys the role women have played in various types of business as owners, co-owners and decision-making managers in European and North American societies since the sixteenth century. Drawing on scholarship, it identifies the economic, social, legal and cultural factors that have facilitated or restricted women's participation in business. It pays particular attention to the ways in which gender norms, and their evolution, shaped not only those women's experience of business, but the ways they were perceived by contemporaries, documented in sources and, partly as a consequence, viewed by historians.

- Description
- Town rules and customs, as well as police and guilds’ regulations, affected women’s participation in the urban economy: the formally recognized and legally accepted power of women was very limited. The book draws attention to how women navigated these gendered terrains. As the book demonstrates, 'exclusion' is too strong a word for the realities of women’s everyday lives. Frequently guild and corporate regulations were more about situating women and regulating their activities, rather than preventing them from operating in the urban economy. Similarly corporate structures, which were under stress, found flexible strategies to incorporate women who through their own initiative and activities put pressure on the systems.

- Description
- This book re-evaluates and extends understandings about how work was conceived and what it could entail for women in the premodern period in Europe from c. 1100 to c. 1800. It does this by building on the growth in literature on women’s working experiences, and by adopting new interpretive approaches that expand received assumptions about what constituted 'work' for women.

- In early modern Catholic Europe and its colonies priests frequently developed close relationships with pious women, serving as their spiritual directors during their lives, and their biographers after their deaths. In this richly illustrated book, Jodi Bilinkoff explores the ways in which clerics related to those female penitents whom they determined were spiritually gifted, and how they conveyed the live stories of these women to readers. The resulting popular literatures of hagiography and spiritual autobiography produced hundreds of texts designed to establish models of behavior for the Catholic faithful in the period between the advent of printing and the beginning of the modern age.

- This collection brings a transcultural and transnational perspective to the study of early modern women rulers and female sovereignty. Contributors to the volume juxtapose rulers from different countries, including Isabel of Castile and Elizabeth Tudor, as well as Isabeau of Bavaria, Jeanne d'Albret, Isabel Clara Eugenia, Juana of Austria, and Catherine of Brandenburg. Several essays also focus on the representations of foreign rulers such as Catherine de Medici in England and Elizabeth I in France. Drawing on early modern literature and historical documents, this study investigates the various political, discursive, and symbolic measures employed to negotiate and support female sovereignty by both early modern writers and the rulers themselves.

- Description
- Representing a historical cross-section of performance and training in Western music since the seventeenth century, this publication brings to light the private and performance lives of five women musicians and composers. Guiding readers through the thirty years war in central Europe, elite courts in Germany, urban salons in Paris, nazi control of Germany and Austria, and American musical life today, as well as personal experiences of marriage, motherhood, and widowhood, the author provides insights into the culture in which each woman was active: duchess Sophie-Elisabeth of Braunschweig-Lueneberg (harpsichordist), Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre (composer), Josephine Lang (pianist and composer), baroness Maria Bach (composer and pianist), Ann Schein (pianist). Mining musical autographs, unpublished letters and press reviews, interviews, and music archives in the United States and Europe, the author probes each musician's social and economic status, her education and musical training, the cultural expectations within the traditions and restrictions of each woman's society, and other factors.

- The period of reform, revolution, and reaction that characterized seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe also witnessed an intensified interest in lesbians. In scientific treatises and orientalist travelogues, in French court gossip and Dutch court records, in passionate verse, in the rising novel, and in cross-dressed flirtations on the English and Spanish stage, poets, playwrights, philosophers, and physicians were placing sapphic relations before the public eye. In this book Lanser shows how intimacies between women became harbingers of the modern, bringing the sapphic into the mainstream of some of the most significant events in Western Europe. Ideas about female same-sex relations became a focal point for intellectual and cultural contests between authority and liberty, power and difference, desire and duty order and governance. Lanser explores the ways in which a historically specific interest in lesbians intersected with systemic concerns that would seem to have little to do with sexuality.

- Description
- This book investigates the gendered nature of political culture across early modern Europe by exploring the relationship between gender, power, and political authority and influence. The collection offers a rethinking of what constituted ‘politics’ and a reconsideration of how men and women operated as part of political culture. It demonstrates how underlying structures could enable or constrain political action, and how political power and influence could be exercised through social and cultural practices. - Description
- Originally published in hardcover in 2014. The beguines began to form in various parts of Europe around 1200. Beguines were laywomen, not nuns. They were never a religious order or a formalized movement, but shared common elements as visionary spirituality, business acumen, and commitment to the poor and sick. The book describes the history of beguines across Europe, beguine ministries, beguine spirituality and compassion, beguines as preachers, performers and writers, and if beguines were heretics.

- Description
- The essays in this book challenge the knowledge about the fairy-tale heroine and offer new insights into the tales produced by female writers and storytellers. Exploring new texts and contexts, Fairy Tales and Feminism reaches out beyond the national and cultural boundaries that have limited our understanding of the fairy tale. Also considered within this volume is how film, television, advertising, and the Internet test the fairy tale's boundaries and its traditional authority in defining gender. .From the Middle Ages to the postmodern age—from the French fabliau to Hollywood's Ever After and television's Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?—the essays assembled here cover a broad range of topics that map new territory for fairy-tale studies.

- Description
- Two classic topics in social anthropology are combined in this work--the study of witchcraft and sorcery and the study of rumors and gossip. After revealing the importance of rumor and gossip as catalysts for accusations of witchcraft and sorcery, it demonstrates their role in the genesis of social and political violence, as seen in peasant rebellions, as well as witch-hunts. The study draws upon examples from Africa, Europe, India, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.
