- Description
- Feminist film theory has been one of the, if not the, most important strands within film theory. Shohini Chaudhuri's book will focus on the work of three leading feminist film theorists - Laura Mulvey, Kaja Silverman and Teresa De Lauretis, whose working represents key schools of thought or emphases within feminist film theory. Key ideas explored through a discussion of the work of these three thinkers include the male gaze, the female voice, technologies of gender, fantasy and body horror, and masculinity in crisis

- Description
- Interdisciplinary reader demonstrates how widely feminist thinking has spread, how deeply it has shaken settled assumptions in the disciplines and how much new light it throws on contemporary controversies. This volume offers not only a reference manual to what we now know about gender relations as social forces but also gives impetus to future thinking in imaginative and utopian ways about questions of gender, power and knowledge. Each chapter explores contemporary questions and dilemmas in feminist theory and research, assessing the impacts of past research and feminist actions. Leading scholars discuss such topics as the state of women's and gender studies, feminist epistemology, cultural representations, globalization and the state, families, and work.

- This text provides an approach to research by providing exercises and 'behind the scenes' glimpses of feminist researchers at work. The in-depth examples cover the range of research questions that feminists engage with, including issues of gender inequality, violence against women, body image issues, and the discrimination of 'other/ed' marginalized groups. The topics vary from ethnography, oral history, focus groups, to content analysis interviewing and survey research. A full chapter is devoted to feminist approaches to mixed methods research.. Research tips and checklists are provided along the way for the researcher.

- This book addresses the central questions of how social and economic rights have been historically constructed and shaped by processes of political and economic change, and by the normative assumptions and design of social institutions. It underlines the importance of thinking beyond states and markets in social provisioning, including in the analysis the interactions between these and other social institutions, especially the family and community.

- Description
- Questions about the relevance and value of various liberal concepts are at the heart of important debates among feminist philosophers ( such as Dworkin, Butler, Jagger, MacKinnon) and social theorists. Although many feminists invoke concepts such as rights, equality, autonomy, and freedom in arguments for liberation, some attempt to avoid them, noting that they can also reinforce and perpetuate oppressive social structures. In this book Schwartzman explores the reasons why concepts such as rights and equality can sometimes reinforce oppression. She argues that certain forms of abstraction and individualism are central to liberal methodology and that these give rise to a number of problems. Drawing on the work of feminist moral, political, and legal theorists, she constructs an approach that employs these concepts, while viewing them from within a critique of social relations of power.

- In Women Artists at the Millennium, artists, art historians, and critics examine the differences that feminist art practice and critical theory have made in late twentieth-century art and the discourses surrounding it. In 1971, when Linda Nochlin published her essay 'Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?' in a special issue of Art News, there were no women's studies, no feminist theory, no such thing as feminist art criticism: there was instead a focus on the mythic figure of the great (male) artist through history. Since then, the 'woman artist' has not simply been assimilated into the canon of 'greatness' but has expanded art-making into a multiplicity of practices with new parameters and perspectives. In Women Artists at the Millennium artists reflect upon their own varied practices and art historians discuss the innovative work of such figures as Louise Bourgeois, Lygia Clark, Mona Hatoum, and Carrie Mae Weems. And Linda Nochlin considers changes since her landmark essay and looks to the future, writing.

- Description
- The term 'homonormativity' describes current prevailing idealised assumptions about lesbian identity. This concept, however, marginalizes subgroups within the greater lesbian population. The authors confront 'homonormativity' in lesbian communities by discussing what is a definable lesbian identity. They explore issues about gender policing and the viewpoints in lesbian communities that hold that transgender, intersectional and queer individuals are considered to have 'false consciousness'. This monograph has been co-published simultaneously as Journal of Lesbian Studies vol. 10 (2006), numbers 1/2.

Is gender yet another Western construct that has been applied to Africa? They show gender as an applied rather than theoretical tool and discuss themes such as the performance of sexuality, lesbianism, women’s political mobilization, the work of gendered NGOs, and the role of masculinity in a gendered world.

- Bolokoli, Khifad, tahara, tahoor, qudiin, irua, bondo, kuruna, negekorsigin, and kene-kene are a few of the terms used in local African languages to denote a set of cultural practices collectively known as female circumcision. Practiced in many countries across Africa and Asia, this ritual is hotly debated. Supporters regard it as a central coming-of-age ritual that ensures chastity and promotes fertility. Human rights groups denounce the procedure as barbaric. It is estimated that between 100 million and 130 million girls or women today have undergone forms of this genital surgery.

- This collection of essays brings together a diverse range of voices that speak to the issues of home, gender, and identity. The contributors are experts on the political economy of the female body. Using an interdisciplinary approach, these writers explore how the victimization, dehumanization, and marginalization of women affect the identity of the female body both individually and communally. The essays include information on the ideologies of the human body in the West, the challenges women face in securing the material needs to create healthy homes and bodies, and environments where feminist practices have made a difference. Home/Bodies includes contributions by several new-generation feminist scholars and researchers, along with established teachers, researchers, and activists in the academy and the community.

- Description
- Over the past decades, feminist scholars have rocked the foundation of academia by challenging long-established beliefs, contesting dominant research paradigms, and identifying new strategies of analysis. How are we to understand these feminist interventions? Do they capture a truth about race and gender that mainstream scholarship has missed? Do they provide important insights into the politics of knowledge? How do feminist uses of traditional research methods differ from their deployment by nonfeminist scholars? What is distinctive and innovative about feminist research? . .Feminist Inquiry provides scholars and students with a comprehensive guide to methodological issues within feminist scholarship. Mary Hawkesworth presents lucid introductions to key philosophical debates about the nature of knowledge, an original account of feminist scholarship's contributions to these debates, and a sophisticated assessment of the analytical tools that feminist scholars have created to improve understandings of the world. Drawing upon contentious debates concerning the incidence of rape, public support for reproductive rights, affirmative action, and welfare reform, Hawkesworth demonstrates how seemingly abstract questions about the nature of knowledge have palpable effects on the lives of contemporary women and men .Feminist Inquiry makes epistemological debates-previously the exclusive preserve of philosophers-accessible to a wider audience, and demonstrates the practical and academic importance of these issues.

- Description
- This publication takes note of a proliferation of phallic feminine figures in disparate North American and European texts from the end of the nineteenth century onward. Brooks takes up the textual figure of the phallic woman where Freud locates it, in the imagined mother that the little boy, in fantasy, credits with a penis of her own. It traces this phallic-woman motif backward to the sexological case study, and forward to newspaper accounts of testosterone-taking third-sexers. Brooks examines both high and low literature, pornography, postmodern theory, and writing that would seem to answer Lacan's injunction to move 'beyond the phallus'.

- Aptheker was an activist participant in some of the major events of the '60s and '70s—the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley, the antiwar movement and the Angela Davis trial. As the daughter of U.S. Communist Party leader Herbert Aptheker, she was virtually a red-diaper princess, only to 'fall from grace' with the party in her late 20s. Her highly politicized New York City upbringing was one of middle class comfort, although sorely affected by McCarthyist persecution—as well as sexual abuse by her father, deeply repressed memories of which she uncovered in adulthood. The author, who taught her first women's studies course in 1977, describes herself as a latecomer to the women's movement (the Communist Party considered it 'petit bourgeois '). A personal transformation paralleled the political, as her repressed lesbianism also surfaced and gradually culminated in a fulfilling long-term relationship.
