- Description
- In this book Anne Phillips contends that critics misrepresent culture as the explanation of everything individuals from minority and non-Western groups do. Multiculturalism has been blamed for encouraging the oppression of women--forced marriages, female genital cutting, school girls wearing the hijab. Phillips informs her argument with the feminist insistence on recognizing women as agents, and defends her position using an unusually broad range of literature, including political theory, philosophy, feminist theory, law, and anthropology. She argues that critics and proponents alike exaggerate the unity, distinctness, and intractability of cultures, thereby encouraging a perception of men and women as dupes constrained by cultural dictates.

- Description

- Description
- Description of political and religious changes in Iran over the past quarter-century and their influence on the position and lives of women. In part I Halper describes the formal changes that took place in the area of family law after the Revolution when Shari'a became the law of the state. Part II examines the situation of women before and during the Revolution. Part III considers the impact of the politics of the revolutionary period on the post-revolutionary legal regime, paying particular attention to the crucial roles that women played in the Revolution. She concludes with a discussion of veiling and the ways in which that issue has come both to symbolize and also impact women’s status. In Part IV she examines the phenomenon of 'Islamic feminism' and the attempts to reconceive a religious jurisprudence that eliminates misogynistic tendencies. Halper concludes that Shari’a law is open to reinterpretation through a process of political and social negotiation within its framework, and that Iranian women have been agents of that reinterpretation.

- Description
- In the early months of 2010, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy told Parliament that the burqa is “not welcome” in France, citing this as a step to defend France against extremists. Employing Edward Said’s theoretical notion of “Orientalism” as means of discussing the “Other,” I argue for a more critical look at France’s role in limiting religious freedom and denying notions of female agency. More specifically, I urge a more diversified view of feminism and female identity outside of the Western paradigm. By viewing the veil as a rhetorically universal symbol of oppression, Western feminists and political figures are missing the opportunity to recognize the diversity of religious adherence and feminist agency that exist in a variety of forms, some of which are highlighted in this paper. While touting the ban’s role in promoting gender equality, Sarkozy employs “faux feminism”– a specious appropriation of feminist sentiment to rationalize Orientalist aims. In effect, this approach reifies Muslim women as victims in need of Western“ heroes” while promoting a unique form of sexist Islamophobia.'

- Description

- In this book Mookherjee develops Iris Young's idea of 'gender as seriality' in order to reconfigure feminism in such a way that it responds to cultural diversity. A discourse of rights can be formulated, she argues, and this task is crucial to balancing women's interests and multicultural claims. Mookherjee works out her claim through a series of difficult dilemmas in modern liberal democracies: the resurgence of controversy over the Hindu practice of widow-immolation (sati): Muslim divorce laws that are gender-discriminatory, forced marriage in the UK's South Asian communities: the right of evangelical Christian parents to exempt their children from secular education: and the right for Muslim girls to wear the hijab in state schools in France. This perspective will spark debate over issues that are crucial in contemporary political philosophy, such as human rights and capabilities, toleration, citizenship practices, cultural rights, the ethic of care, communitarianism, and the politics of recognition.

- In the 1970s, often to the consternation of parents and siblings, some progressive young Arab women voluntarily donned the veil. The movement, which rapidly expanded and continues to gather momentum, has sparked controversy within Islamic culture, as well as reactions ranging from perplexity to outrage from those outside it. Western feminist commentators have been particularly vociferous in decrying the veil, which they glibly interpret as a concrete manifestation of patriarchal oppression. However, says El Guindi, most Western observers fail to realize that veiling, which has a long and complex history, has been embraced by many Arab women as both an affirmation of cultural identity and a strident feminist statement. Not only does the veil de-marginalize women in society, but it also represents an expression of liberation from colonial legacies. By voluntarily removing themselves from the male gaze, these women assert their allegiance to a rich and varied tradition, and at the same time preserve their sexual identity.

- This book presents a detailed critical analysis of the work of Fatima Mernissi. Mernissi is considered to be one of the major figures in feminist thought for both Morocco and Muslim society in general. The work discusses Mernissi’s intellectual trajectory from ‘secular’ to ‘Islamic’ feminism in order to trace the evolution of so-called Islamic feminist theory. The book also engages critically with the work of other Muslim feminists, using frameworks and approaches developed in the works of Muslim reformist thinkers, namely Mohammad Arkoun and Nasr Abu Zaid, with the aim of engaging the theorization of this emerging feminism.

- In this analysis of how Western and Iranian feminism both converge and conflict the author makes connections among feminism, imperialism and the discourses of global sisterhood. She investigates topics including the state-sponsored Women’s Organization of Iran and the involvement of feminists such as Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem in the Iranian feminism movement before and during the 1979 revolution. She examines the veiled woman in the films of Tahmineh Milani, Ziba Mir-Hosseini and Kim Longinotto, and Mahnaz Afzali.
