Religion is explored beyond the traditional boundaries of church worship and institutional structures to encompass the diverse cultures of male sexuality, home life, war, work, immigration, leisure and sectarian politics. Issues of change, such as the decline of single-sex associational settings, the theological shifts and changing fortunes of sects, the varying visibility of queer and homosexual cultures, and the shifting boundaries and collapsing distinctions between clergy and laypeople are explored in depth.

- Description
- In this anthology SallyAnn H. Ferguson presents a number of important spiritual and autobiographical writings by African American women in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. .Ferguson places the texts in an evolutionary discourse. Women of African descent were subjected to slavery, rape, and ideological derision throughout American history, in part due to deeply ingrained biological imperatives within European American men. Despite this the African-American woman has consciously developed a literary tradition based on fundamental evolutionary principles of mind and body. Authors: Maria W. Stewart (1803-1879): Jarena Lee (1783-?): Harriet E. Adams Wilson (1828?-1863?) : Harriet A. Jacobs (1813-1897): Elizabeth Keckley (1818?-1907): Frances E. Watkins Harper (1824-1911): Charlotte L. - Among the radical magazines, news sheets, and bulletins that surfaced in the heady climate of the late 1960s, none can compare with the venerable Advocate, rightly described as 'the world's premier chronicle of the lesbian and gay civil rights movement.' In this book Chris Bull compiles dozens of trenchant and timely articles on politics from the magazine's first 32 years, ranging from descriptions of bar raids and early, celebratory coverage of the first openly gay elected officials to some of the first (woefully belated) articles on AIDS and, later, the rise of the religious right.

- Description
- With marriage in decline, divorce on the rise, the demise of the nuclear family, and the increase in marriages and adoptions among same-sex partners, it is clear that the structures of kinship in the modern West are in a state of flux.In this book Godelier contextualizes these developments, surveying the accumulated experience of humanity with regard to such phenomena as the organization of lines of descent, sexuality and sexual prohibitions. Godelier also studies the evolution of Western conjugal and familial traditions from their roots in the nineteenth century to the present. The conclusion he draws is that it is never the case that a man and a woman are sufficient on their own to raise a child, and nowhere are relations of kinship or the family the keystone of society.

- Description
- Matysik explores a movement known as 'ethics reform' that flourished in Central Europe between 1890 and 1930. The author examines the works of German-speaking intellectuals and activists-moral philosophers, sociologists, legal theorists, pedagogy specialists, psychoanalysts, sexual liberationists, and others-who discovered in the language of ethics a means to revitalize the public sphere. Ethics reformers used the academic field of moral philosophy to contest public- and state-sponsored rhetoric that they thought equated 'morality' with national loyalty, religious tradition, and repressive sexual mores. They founded organizations and periodicals, circulated brochures, and hosted lectures and conferences, all aimed at rethinking ethics for a secular modernity. Arising in a context sharply influenced by materialism, Darwinism, and the advent of sexology, ethics debates gradually focused on the role of sexuality in definitions of ethics and of the moral subject. Intellectuals and activists came to agree that sexuality was central to the formation of the moral subject.

- Description
- In the 1960s Christian religious practice and identity declined rapidly and women's lives were transformed, spawning a demographic revolution in sex, family and work. The argument of this book is that the two were intimately connected, triggered by an historic confluence of factors. Canada, Ireland, UK and USA represent different stages of secularisation for the book's study. Using statistical evidence from government censuses, Brown demonstrates how secularisation was deeply linked to demographic change. Starting with the distinctive features of the 1960s, the book quantifies secularisation's scale, timing and character in each nation. Then, the intense links of women's sexual revolution to religious decline and their changing patterns of marriage, coupling and birthing are explored. Finally the secularising consequences of economic change, higher education and women's expanding work roles areexamined.

- The book focuses on the period 1966-1989, which saw the highest concentration of anti-abortion activity during the twentieth century. It examines the tactics deployed by campaigners in their efforts to overturn the 1967 Abortion Act. Key themes include the influence of religion on attitudes towards sexuality and pregnancy: representations of women and the female body: and the attitudes towards the status of the fetus articulated by both anti-abortion and pro-choice advocates during the years 1966-1989.

- Description
- This book unravels the changes which have altered the life courses of ordinary women over the past one hundred and fifty years, namely the changes in marriage and fertility patterns. Using data from Dutch population registers and analytical techniques from the life course approach, the book offers new evidence on women’s changing position in the labour market, their role in pre-nuptial sexuality, and their contribution to marriage and fertility change in the Netherlands between 1880 and 1960. The author reconstructs the socio-economic and demographic worlds of different groups of working and non-working women, and by doing so she is able to locate the various groups driving the changes.
