- Description
- This book looks at the impact of war on women in Britain. It shows how conflict has changed women’s lives and how those changes have put women at the centre of peace campaigning. Lindsey German shows how women have played a central role in anti-war and peace movements, including the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The women themselves talk about how they overcame prejudice and difficulty to become active. The book looks at how the changing nature of war, especially the involvement of civilians, increasingly involves significant numbers of women. As well as providing an inspiring account of women's opposition to war, the book also tackles key contemporary developments, challenging negative assumptions about Muslim women and showing how anti-war movements are feeding into a broader desire to change society.

- Description
- In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.

- Description
- Barbara Wootton was one of the extraordinary public figures of the twentieth century. She was an outstanding social scientist, an architect of the welfare state, an iconoclast who challenged conventional wisdom and the first woman to sit as Speaker in the House of Lords in Parliament. This biography is an account of the making of British social policy at a critical period seen through the lens of the life and work of a pivotal figure. Oakley tells a story about the intersections of the public and the private and about the way her subject’s life unfolded within, was shaped by, and helped to shape a particular social and intellectual context.

- Description
- When women agitated to join the medical profession in Britain during the 1860s, the practice of surgery proved both a help (women were neat, patient and used to needlework) and a hindrance (surgery was brutal, bloody and distinctly unfeminine). Brock examines the cultural, social and self-representation of the woman surgeon from the second half of the nineteenth century until the end of the Great War. She investigates what surgery women performed and how these procedures affected their personal and professional reputation, as well as the reactions of their patients to these new phenomena.

- Together with her mother, Emmeline, Christabel Pankhurst co-led the single-sex Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), founded in 1903 and regarded as the most notorious of the groupings campaigning for the parliamentary vote for women. A First Class Honours Graduate in Law, Christabel revitalised the women’s suffrage campaign by rousing thousands of women to become suffragettes and to demand rather than ask politely for their democratic citizenship rights. A supreme tactician, her advocacy of ‘militant’, unladylike tactics shocked many people, and the political establishment. When an end to militancy was called on the outbreak of war in 1914, she encouraged women to engage in war work as a way to win their enfranchisement. Four years later, when enfranchisement was granted to certain categories of women aged thirty and over, she stood unsuccessfully for election to parliament, as a member of the Women’s Party. In 1940 she moved to the USA with her adopted daughter, and had a successful career there as a Second Adventist preacher and writer.

- Throughout Labour's history, even in its earliest years, women were present in the room. They came from many backgrounds and they worked for the causes they believed in as organisers, campaigners, negotiators, public speakers and leaders. Amongst them was Isabella Ford, an active socialist and trade unionist and Millicent Fawcett, the President of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. They took on the vested interests of their time: sometimes they won. Yet the vast majority of them have been forgotten by the Labour movement that they helped to found. This book tells their story.

- During the two world wars, it is well known that women all over the country entered factories, armed services and farms, filling gaps left by the exodus of men. In forestry, they also formed the Women's Timber Corps. Timber was a vital resource, imported into the UK in vast quantities, but wartime meant the country had to be self-sufficient .

It introduces lesser-known aspects of women's war experience, including female composers' musical responses to the war, changes in the culture of women's mourning dress, and the relationships between war, motherhood, and politics. The chapters also consider the gendered nature of war memory in Britain, exploring the emotional legacies of the conflict today, and the place of women's wartime stories on the contemporary stage. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women's History Review.

- Drawing on a vast range of recent scholarship, as well as hitherto unpublished archival research, this book analyses the variety of messages about sexuality interacting at specific historical moments. Hall discusses a range of cases, for example, the 'massage parlours' furore of the 1890s, and lesser-known sex reformers such as Stella Browne and George Ives. However, notorious scandals, such as the trial of Oscar Wilde and the prosecution of Radclyffe Hall's lesbian novel The Well of Loneliness, famous figures such as Havelock Ellis and Marie Stopes, and the well-known liberalizing Acts of Parliament of the late 1960s are not neglected.

- Description
- This volume covers the country from Cork to Belfast, from 1914 up to the early 2000s. Half of the book is devoted to Northern Ireland and to the second part of the twentieth century. The chapters describe the participation of women in war, the portrayal and non-portrayal of women in war, their experiences of war and the consequences they suffered. This book is not only about women fighting, it is also about how war and warlike situations affected women of all types and classes and their children: prostitutes, rural women, urban women, protestant women, Catholic women, writers, dramatists, artists, journalists, women in the peace movement, feminists, free women and imprisoned women. The thirteen chapters include two articles on the First World War, about 'The Women's Legion'- a women's voluntary organization, and one about the poet and writer Winifred Letts and her responses to the war. Two articles on the Irish War of Independence are concerned with representation and portrayals of women involved in the nationalist cause. The Second World War is the subject of three articles, about prostitutes, babies and rural women.
