- Description
- This book reconstructs the history of rape. The author narrates the history of rape, starting with the story of Lucretia in the sixth century BCE, who was raped and committed suicide. She argues that people's comprehension of rape has been consistent across the ages and advocates a new debate about sexual violence, sexual boundaries and consent. She also examines the role of race and the recurrent image of the black rapist, the omission of male victims and rape culture.

- Description
- This book analyzes the notion of gender in American presidential campaign communications. In spite of the second and third wave feminist movements, little has changed over the decades in gendered representations of presidential candidates. Through intersectional content and discourse analysis, this book shows how presidential candidates used their campaign to position themselves as defender of traditional gender roles and how this investment in heteronormative behavior was made visible in both international and domestic policy choices.

- Description
- This publication - a transnational exploration of the intersection of feminism, history, and memory - shows how the recollection of violent histories can generate possibilities for progressive futures. Questioning the politics of memory-making in relation to experiences of vulnerability and violence, this collection asks: How can memories of violence and its afterlives be mobilized for change? What strategies can disrupt and counter public forgetting? What role do the arts play in addressing the erasure of past violence from current memory and in creating new visions for future generations? With interdisciplinary contributions from, amongst others, Chile, Europe, Turkey, and the United States.

- Description
- This book explores representations of women in American and British fin-de-siecle and modern literature. It focuses on feminine figures who do “not to know” things, who are considered by critics as conservative, backward and threatening to modern feminist goals. Grounded in the late nineteenth century’s changing political and generic representations of women, this book provides a novel interpretative framework for reconsidering the epistemic claims of these women. The author analyzes characters from works by e.g. Henry James, Frank Norris, Ann Petry, Rebecca West, Edith Wharton and Virginia Woolf. She illustrates that these female characters represent crucial strategies by which modern and contemporary subjects navigate, survive, and oppose gender oppression.
