- This book brings the study of whiteness and postcolonial perspectives to bear on debates about urban change. It is a contribution to debates about urban change, race and cosmopolitan urbanism and brings the study of whiteness to the discipline of geography, questioning the notion of white ethnicity. The book engages with Indigenous peoples’ experiences of whiteness – past and present, and with theoretical postcolonial perspectives. The author .uses Sydney as an example of a 'city of whiteness', considering trends such as Sydney’s 'SoHo Syndrome' and the 'Harlemisation' of the Aboriginal community

- Description
- Nadje al-Ali looks at the myths and misconceptions which have dominated debates about Iraqi women. She traces the political history of Iraq from post-colonial independence, to the emergence of a women's movement in the 1950s and Saddam Hussein's early policy of state feminism. The book also discusses the increases in social conservatism, domestic violence and prostitution, and shows that, far from being passive victims, Iraqi women have been, and continue to be, key political actors. The impact of Islam on women's lives is analysed in the context of the recent invasion and occupation, and it is argued that US-led calls for liberation may in the long term serve to oppress the women of Iraq further.

- Description
- Shahrazad, the legendary fictional storyteller who spun the tales of the 1,001 Arabian Nights, has long been rendered as a silent exotic beauty by Western film and fiction adaptations. Now, she talks back to present a new image of Muslim women. In this book Gauch analyzes how postcolonial writers and filmmakers from Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia have reclaimed the storyteller in order to portray Muslim women in ways that highlight their power to shape their own destinies. Gauch demonstrates how these depictions of Shahrazad—from artists such as Moufida Tlatli, Fatima Mernissi, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Assia Djebar, Leïla Sebbar—navigate the demands of a global marketplace, even as they reshape the stories told about the Islamic world. In the face of both rising fundamentalism and proliferating Western media representations of Arab and Muslim women as silent, exploited, and uneducated victims, Gauch establishes how contemporary works of literature and film revive the voice of a long-silenced Shahrazad—and, ultimately, overthrow oppressive images of Muslim women.

- Description
- Growing up in Kenya, Kenda Mutongi encountered a perplexing contradiction. While the young teachers at her village school railed against colonialism, many of her elders, including her widowed mother, praised their former British masters. In this book Mutongi explores how both the challenges and contradictions of colonial rule and the frustrations and failures of independence shaped the lives of Maragoli widows and their complex relations with each other, their families, and the larger community. Throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, rates of widowhood have been remarkably high in Kenya. Mutongi here argues that widows survive by publicly airing their social, economic, and political problems, their “worries of the heart.” Initially aimed at the men in their community, and then their colonial rulers, this strategy changed after independence as widows increasingly invoked the language of citizenship to demand their rights from the new leaders of Kenya —leaders whose failure to meet the needs of ordinary citizens has led to deep disenchantment and altered Kenyans’ view of their colonial past.

- Description
- This is a study of war in the thought of one of the twentieth-century's important political thinkers. Hannah Arendt's writing was fundamentally rooted in her understanding of war and its political significance. But this element of her work has surprisingly been neglected in international and political theory. This book is about the full range of Arendt's historical and conceptual writing on war and introduces to international theory the distinct language she used to talk about war and the political world. It builds on her re-thinking of old concepts such as power, violence, greatness, world, imperialism, evil, hypocrisy and humanity and introduces some that are new to international thought like plurality, action, agonism, natality and political immortality. The issues that Arendt dealt with throughout her life and work continue to shape the political world and her approach to political thinking remains a source of inspiration for those in search of guidance not in what to think but how to think about politics and war. Re-reading Arendt's writing, forged through firsthand experience of occupation and struggles for liberation, political founding and resistance in time of war, reveals a more serious engagement with war than her earlier readers have recognized.

- Divine Love explores the work of Luce Irigaray. Her work stands at the intersection of contemporary debates concerned with culture, gender and religion, but her ideas have not yet been presented in a comprehensive way from the perspective of Religious Studies. This book tries to examine the development of religious themes from Irigaray’s initial work, Speculum of the Other Woman, where she rejects traditional forms of western religions, to her more recent explorations of eastern religions. Irigaray’s ideas on love, the divine, an ethics of sexual difference, and normative heterosexuality are analysed. These analyses are placed in the context of the reception of Irigaray’s work by secular feminists such as Judith Butler, Drucilla Cornell and Elizabeth Grosz, as well as by feminists in Religious Studies such as Pamela Sue Anderson, Ellen Armour, Amy Hollywood and Grace Jantzen. Finally, Irigaray’s own spiritual path, which has been influenced by eastern religions is evaluated in the light of recent theoretical developments in orientalism and postcolonialism.

- Description
- This volume of essays analyzes recent works by contemporary women writers whose characters’ midlife and later life changes are mapped in their narratives. Rather than focusing on the painful losses undergone by women of a certain age, recent narratives explore a kind of adventure of aging, one that is spiritual in nature, enabling new ways of being and becoming, but open-ended and capable of great variation in practice. In particular, these journeys of the spirit focus on the retrospective movement undergone by a midlife or older woman as she is led by inner or outer forces to assess where she has come from and decipher a shape or pattern to her journey. The essays in this book employ a wide variety of critical lenses to chart these adventures, including archetypal, Sufi, post-colonial, and feminist analysis: archival research: aboriginal life writing: and trauma theory. These studies bring a new understanding to women’s adventure of age in both literary texts and in life.
