- Description
- What international family law is ‘necessary for the proper functioning of the internal market’? An analysis of international family law within the European Union from a multidisciplinary approach was needed to tackle this central theme. Articles 61c and 65 of the EC Treaty expressly place civil judicial cooperation in the perspective of the proper functioning of the internal market and thus appear to grant it a distinct ‘economic’ flavour. Still, the link between civil cooperation and family law on the one hand and economic integration on the other hand, is not self-evident. A key question today is to what extent and according to what framework the European legislator can and should act in the field of international family law.

- Description
- The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is one of the most important human rights tools ever created. Adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly, it is often described as an international bill of rights for women. These essays and personal reflections, from individuals who have served on the committee that monitors CEDAW, introduce readers to the issues and the activism. .Only a handful of countries have refused to ratify CEDAW: the United States is the only industrialized country among them. This book reveals the profound impact the convention has had on women's lives around the world and its potential to affect American women. With examples and moving reminiscences from Japan to Tunisia to the Caribbean and beyond, this collection addresses CEDAW's impact on women in Islam, labor markets, migration, violence against women, human trafficking, women in politics, and more.

- Description

- Description
- From half a million women who die in pregnancy and childbirth to one out of three women suffering domestic violence worldwide, from 90 million girls who do not go to school to HIV/AIDS spreading fastest among adolescent girls, women around the world face unique health challenges. In this book Anne Firth Murray tackles health issues from sex selective abortion and unequal access to food and health care to the challenges faced by aging women. Murray makes clear that the issues are social, ethical, and political much more than they are medical.

- Description
- Kojima focuses on the intersections between female migration and trafficking in women and girls in the context of labour flows within Asia. She describes recent developments in trafficking and migration patterns within the international economy and their implications for interventions. She considers trafficking as a manifestation of hegemonic masculinity operational at both the level of the state and of civil society. She analyses the transformative potential of a human rights approach for addressing the vulnerability of women and girls in the migration-trafficking continuum, gender relations and women's collective agency.

- Description
- This book discusses recent theoretical and empirical developments in international migration from a gender perspective. Its main objective is to analyse the diversification and stratification of gendered migratory streams with regard to skill level, labour market integration, and legal status. The book builds upon the recent shift in scholarly research on migration, with women-centred research shifting more toward the analysis of gender. Theoretical formulations of gender as relational, and as spatially and temporally contextual have begun to inform gendered analyses of migration. The contributions to this book elaborate in more detail the broader social factors that influence migrating women’s and men’s roles, access to resources, facilities and services.
