- Description
- This collection of essays examine the HBO program Girls. Since its premiere in 2012, the series has garnered the attention of individuals from various walks of life. The show has been described in many terms: insightful, out-of-touch, brash, sexist, racist, perverse, complex, edgy, daring, provocative. Overall, there is no doubt that Girls has firmly etched itself in the fabric of early twenty-first-century popular culture. The essays in this book examine the show from various angles including: white privilege: body image: gender: culture: race: sexuality: parental and generational attitudes: third wave feminism: hipster, indie, and urban music as it relates to Generation Y and Generation X.

- Description
- Collection of essays with recent research into the impact of the conflict on British women during the First World War and since. It introduces lesser-known aspects of women's war experience, including female composers' musical responses to the war, changes in the culture of women's mourning dress, and the relationships between war, motherhood, and politics. The chapters also consider the gendered nature of war memory in Britain, exploring the emotional legacies of the conflict today, and the place of women's wartime stories on the contemporary stage. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women's History Review.

- Description
- This volume explores issues of black female identity through the various “imaginings” of the black female body in print and visual culture. Offering an exploration of the continuities and discontinuities of subjectivity and agency, this collection reveals black women’s expressivity as a multilayered enterprise, liberating and similarly confining. Thus these representations in art, literature, and culture perform a delicate and challenging dance of redemption—a redemption necessary to flesh out the precarious dynamics of being black and female at the turn of this century.

- Description
- The contributors look at how women composed, assuming that compositional gender strategies may have been used differently when applied through her vision: how women were composed, or represented and interpreted through music in a larger cultural context, and how her presence in that dialog situated her in social space. They describe trace how women found music as a means for communicating, establishing intellectual power, generating musical tastes and for enhancing the quality of their lives: the impact of women who performed publicly on their lives and families: and how some women made their own money with music.
