- Description
- This book deals not only with 'typical' colonial empires like the British Empire, but also with those less well-studied, such as the German, Russian, Italian and U.S. empires. The focus is on various imperial formations, from colonies in Africa or Asia to settler colonial settings like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The book deals with key themes such as intimacy, sexuality and female education, as well as exploring aspects like the marriage regimes some empires developed or the so-called 'servant debates'. It also presents several ways in which imperial formations were structured by gender and categories like race, class, caste, sexuality, religion and citizenship.

- Scott shows that the gender equality invoked today as a fundamental principle was not originally associated with the term “secularism” when it first entered the nineteenth century. The inequality of the sexes was fundamental to the articulation of the separation of church and state that inaugurated Western modernity. Western nation-states imposed a new order of women’s subordination, assigning them to a feminized familial sphere meant to complement the rational masculine realms of politics and economics. It was not until the question of Islam arose in the late twentieth century that gender equality became a primary feature of the discourse of secularism.

- This book explores the courtship and marriage of Gwyneth Murray, an English woman, and a Canadian, Harry Logan, who wrote in the personae of their vagina (Dardanella) and penis (Peter) during World War I. Through an analysis of their daily correspondence over nearly a decade, it uncovers the couple’s changing attitudes to the intersection of sexuality and religion, to marriage and childrearing, as they navigated the transition from Victorian to modern values.

- The collection begins with ? recollection of celebrating, as a child in Bulgaria, Alphabet Day, the holiday honoring the Cyrillic letters. Kristeva considers literature with Barthes, freedom through Rousseau, Teresa of Avila and mystical experience, Simone de Beauvoir’s dream life, and Antigone and the psychic life of women. A group of essays drawing on her psychoanalytic work delve into Freud, Lacan, maternal eroticism, and the importance of psychoanalysis today. She thinks through disability and normativity, monotheism and secularization, the need to believe and the desire to know. Finally, Kristeva discusses French culture and diversity, rethinking universalism and interrogating the potential for Islam and psychoanalysis to meet, and pays homage to de Beauvoir by rephrasing her dictum into the provocative “One is born woman, but I become one.”

- Description
- Over twenty-nine chapters, this handbook illustrates how women's and gender history can shape how we view the past, looking at how gender influenced people's lives as they participated in migration, colonialism, trade, warfare, artistic production, and community building. Theoretically cutting edge, each chapter is alive with colorful historical characters, from young Chicanas transforming urban culture, to free women of color forging abolitionist doctrines, Asian migrant women defending the legitimacy of their marriages, and transwomen fleeing incarceration. Together, their lives constitute the history of a continent.

- This book investigates meanings associated with female head hair, problematising assumptions about its role and implications in the 21st Century. Authors reflect on the use of hair in popular culture, such as children’s television and pop album artwork, as well as in work by women artists. Studies examine the lived experiences of women from a range of backgrounds and histories, including curly-haired women in Israel, African American women and lesbians in France. Other essays interrogate the connotations of women’s head hair in relation to body image, religion and aging.

- Description
- This book looks at why do governments promote women's rights. Through analysis of state action in seventy countries from 1975 to 2005, the book shows how different women's rights issues involve different histories and trigger different conflicts. Change on violence against women and workplace equality involves a logic of status politics: feminist movements leverage international norms to contest women's subordination. Family law, abortion and contraception, conform to a logic of doctrinal politics, which turns on relations between religious groups and the state. Publicly-paid parental leave and child care follow a logic of class politics, in which the strength of Left parties and overall economic conditions are more salient.

- Menstruation is still seen by many as a mark of shame. We are told not to discuss it in public, that tampons and sanitary pads should be hidden away, the blood rendered invisible. In many parts of the world, poverty, culture, and religion collide, causing the taboo around menstruation to have grave consequences. Younger people who menstruate are deterred from going to school, adults from work, infections are left untreated. The shame is universal and the silence a global rule.

- Gender discrimination is often seen from a human rights perspective. But restrictions and discrimination against women are also bad economics. They undermine the talent pool available to the private sector, they distort power relationships within the family and lead to inefficiencies in the use of resources. They contribute to create an environment in which women are second class citizens, with fewer options than men, lower quality jobs, lower pay, often the victims of various forms of violence, literally from the cradle to the grave. Women are also not fully politically empowered and have scant presence in the corridors of power, whether as finance ministers, central bank governors, prime ministers or on the boards of leading corporations.

- Female philanthropy was at the heart of transformative thinking about society in the interwar period. In Britain, in the aftermath of the First World War, professionalization: the authority of the social sciences, mass democracy, internationalism and media sounded the future and the death knell of elite practices of benevolence. Female philanthropists reshaped personal models of charity into modern projects of social connectedness, and new forms of cultural and political encounter. The author connects the stories of four women: Evangeline Booth, Lettice Fisher, Emily Kinnaird and Muriel Paget.

- Women writers played a central role in the development of the philosophy of mind and its practical outworkings in Romantic era England, Scotland and Ireland. This book focuses on the writings and lives of five writers - Anna Letitia Barbauld (1743 – 1825), Honora Edgeworth (1751 – 1 May 1780), Hannah More (1745 – 1833), Elizabeth Hamilton (1756?– 23 July 1816) and Maria Edgeworth (1768 – 1849) - a group of women who differed in their political, religious and social views but were nevertheless associated through correspondence, family ties and a shared belief in the importance of female education.

- This book chronicles the influence of second wave feminism on everything from electoral politics to LGBTQ rights. The original descriptions of second wave feminism focused on elite, white voices, obscuring the accomplishments of many activists, as third wave feminists criticized. In this book scholars provide a more complex description of second wave feminism, in which the efforts of women from many races, classes, sexual orientations, and religious traditions, in the fight for equality have had a long-term impact on American politics.
