The object of this book is integration of the concept of gender in the study of 'cultural transfer'. A second object is to give some historical background to the debate on multiculturalism and cultural exchange. The essays in the book are on the history of urban centres like Paris or Venice, on social spaces like academies, salons, and (royal) courts, and on cultural practices like lectures, conversations, scientific debate, correspondence, travel, fashion, and translation.
