- Description
- This history explores the nature of postwar advocacy for women's higher education. Eisenmann illuminates the impact of this advocacy in the postwar era, identifying a link between women's activism during World War II and the women's movement of the late 1960s. Though the postwar period has been portrayed as an era of domestic retreat for women, Eisenmann finds otherwise as she explores areas of institution building and gender awareness. In an era uncomfortable with feminism, this generation advocated individual decision making rather than collective action by professional women, generally conceding their complicated responsibilities as wives and mothers. By redefining our understanding of activism and assessing women's efforts within the context of their milieu, this innovative work reclaims an era often denigrated for its lack of attention to women.

- Description
- Using fathers' first-hand accounts from letters, journals, and personal interviews along with hospital records and medical literature, Leavitt offers a new perspective on the changing role of expectant fathers from the 1940s to the 1980s. She shows how, as men moved first from the hospital waiting room to the labor room in the 1960s, and then on to the delivery and birthing rooms in the 1970s and 1980s, they became more involved in the birth experience and their influence over events expanded. With attention to power and privilege, Leavitt charts not only the increasing involvement of fathers, but also medical inequalities, the impact of race and class, and the evolution of hospital policies. The book is illustrated with images from TV, films, and magazines.

- Description
- First printing 1991. At a time when there were few women directors in commercial films, the post-war avant-garde movement offered women an opportunity to express themselves through cinema. Focusing on Maya Deren, Shirley Clarke, and Joyce Wieland, Rabinovitz illustrrates how women used bold physical images to enhance their work and how each filmmaker provided entrée to her subversive art while remaining culturally acceptable. She combines archival materials with her own interviews to show how the women's labour and films, even their identities as women filmmakers, were produced and understood.
