- Description

- Description
- Empowerment, liberation, choice. Once the watchwords of feminism, these terms have now been co-opted by a society that sells women an airbrushed, highly sexualised and increasingly narrow vision of femininity. While the opportunities available to women may have expanded, the ambitions of many young girls are in reality limited by a culture that sees women's sexual allure as their only passport to success. At the same time women are encouraged to believe that the inequality all around us is born of biological differences rather than social factors.

- Description
- This book explores popular contemporary texts featuring lesbian characters, including The L Word, Queer as Folk, Dykes to Watch Out For, and various pornographic videos. Beirne places these works in the context of political and cultural trends of the post-millennial period and compares them to cultural representations of lesbians from the past. Taking up such issues as mainstreaming, feminine lesbians, the male gaze, female masculinity, and sexual practice, this book puts forward provocative readings of texts that have been little explored and offers new insights into the depiction of lesbians

- Description
- This book takes on representations of black women's sexuality in the porn industry. Black women share their thoughts about desire and eroticism, black women's sexuality and representation, and ambition and the need to make ends meet. Miller-Young documents their interventions into the history of black women's sexuality, looking at individual choices, however small, a costume, a gesture, an improvised line,as small acts of resistance, of what she calls 'illicit eroticism.' Building on the work of other black feminist theorists, she seeks to expand discussion of black women's sexuality to include their eroticism and desires, as well as their participation and representation in the adult entertainment industry.

- Description
- Based on a reading of hardcore pornographic films from the 1970s and 1980s the author develops a method of analyzing racialized pornography that focuses on black women's pleasures in blackness: delights in toying with and subverting blackness, moments of racialized excitement, deliberate enactments of hyperbolic blackness, and humorous performances of blackness. The author considers how racial fictions can create a space of agency and pleasure for black female subjects.
