- Description
- Klein shows in this book, that contemporary feminism, once 'disrobed' from the rhetorical garb of eauality with men, is laid bare as having a single-minded political agenda - the achievement of privilege over men. This goal, it is argued, is blatantly inconsistent with any reasonable notion of equality, and creates an insidious sexism apparent in the behavior of feminists themselves. In the final analysis, Klein urges readers to embrace a productive and healthy account of justice, merit and overall human excellence.

- Description
- By describing and analyzing the feminist, charitable and patriotic activities of Ottoman Muslim women during the period 1908-1918, the study sought to get a better understanding of the identity claims which are part of the particular form of discourse which nationalism is and to show how the processes of community and nation building and the creation of state identities in the late Ottoman Empire were gendered. It shows that Ottoman Muslim women with their organizations and activities not only reflected the multi-tier identities prevailing in late Ottoman society, but actively took part in shaping and reshuffling them and that knowledge of the activities of Ottoman (Muslim) women in the many feminist, philanthropic and patriotic organizations which existed during the last decades of the Ottoman Empire is indispensible for a better understanding of the development of nationalism(s) in the late Ottoman era and the identity claims involved in it.

- Description
- Cecily Devereux reconsiders the extent to which McClung's enduring legacy of crusading for women's rights is founded on the ideas of British eugenicists such as Francis Galton and Caleb Saleeby and implicated in the passage of eugenical legislation in Canada. In a critical study of Painted Fires, the Pearlie Watson books, and several short stories, Devereux attempts to understand McClung's fiction in terms of its engagement with a politics of 'race' and nation and constructions of specifically 'racial' impurities that many women saw themselves as uniquely able to 'cure.'

- Description
- Special consideration in this volume is given to gender issues arising during periods when upheaval challenged colonial regimes, which often resulted in decolonization and independence. Chapters also reveal how former colonies transitioned into ‘nations,’ along with transnational dynamics that took place among modern states. A common thread woven through each article is the matter of precisely who it was that deserved to be treated and recognized as fully human in an era of imperial exchanges and ongoing capitalist globalization. Authors describe hemes as labour, commodities, fashion, mobility, and activism while exploring the dynamics of empire in destinations ranging from Africa and the Americas to Europe and Asia. .Originally published as Gender & History Volume 26 Issue 3

- Description
- Much has been written about the American women’s rights pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902). Historians have written her biography, detailed her campaign for woman’s suffrage, documented her partnership with Susan B. Anthony, and compiled all of her writings and papers. The author extends the discussion of Stanton’s impact on modern-day feminism by analyzing her intellectual contributions to — and personal experiences with — family law. Throughout her fifty-year career, Stanton emphasized reform of the private sphere of the family as central to achieving women’s equality.

- Description
- This book provides an overview of Spanish feminist thought from the eighteenth century to the present. It focuses on six concepts: solitude, personality, social class, work, difference and equality. It compares Spanish feminist theory with that of other countries. The author brings together arguments from different Spanish scholars. The book describes the tension between theorists of each persuasion, a tension that emerged publicly during Spain's democratic era.

- Description
- Looking forward to the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of essays looks back at the decades since women won the right to vote to analyze the changes, developments, and even continuities in women's roles in the broad political sphere. Ultimately, the book asks two questions about the last 100 years of women's suffrage: How did the Nineteenth Amendment alter the American political system? and How has women's engagement in politics changed over the last 100 years?

- Description
- This book assesses the relationship between the politics and aesthetics of Olive Schreiner, South Africa's first novelist and modernist. The author argues that by understanding how writers use modernist techniques to articulate postcolonial resistance, the form and function of South African literature may be catched. The book provides readings of South Schreiner’s three novels, Undine, The story of an African farm, and From man to man, in light of the new theory of primitivism in African literature by directly addressing the issue of narrative form. This argument is contextualised in relation to the work of other Southern African authors, in whose writings the impact of Schreiner’s politics and aesthetics can be traced, such as J.M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer and Doris Lessing.
