- The theme of female transformation informs the Hollywood representation of femininity from the studio era to the present. Whether it occurs physically, emotionally, or on some other level, transformation allows female protagonists to negotiate their own complex desires and to resist the compulsory marriage plot. A study of Hollywood from Now, Voyager, The Heiress, and Flamingo Road, to Carrie, the Alien films, The Brave One, and the Slasher Horror genre, this book boldly unsettles commonplace understandings of genre film, female sexuality, and Freudian theory as it makes a case for the queer relevance of female

- Levinas’ ethics and his relationship to film are studied in relation to the work of Luce Irigaray, Tina Chanter, Kelly Oliver, and Ewa Ziarek. The sexualized female body is eyed with feminist perspectives. Readings of films from different decades and cultures are made, including Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Federico Fellini's La dolce vita (1959), Michelangelo Antonioni's L'avventura (1960), John Huston's The Misfits (1961), and Philip Kaufman's The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988).

- By analyzing the negotiation of femininities and masculinities within contemporary Hollywood cinema and by focusing on the largely neglected intersections between postfeminism and queer theory this volume presents diverse interrogations of popular cinema. The chapters in this collection position contemporary commercial production as a space where female empowerment is both celebrated and undermined, and signal the necessity of further debate surrounding the formation of gender identity in postmillennial Hollywood cinema.

- Description
- Images of flappers, garçonnes, Modern Girls, neue Frauen, and trampky---all embodiments of the dashing New Woman---symbolized an expanded public role for women from the suffragist era through the dawn of 1960s feminism. Chronicling nearly a century of global challenges to gender norms, This volume examines the ways in which novel ideas about women's roles in society and politics were disseminated through these technological media, and it probes the significance of radical changes in female fashion, appearance, and sexual identity. Tthese essays explore the manner in which New Women artists used photography and film to respond creatively to gendered stereotypes and to reconceive of ways of being a woman in a rapidly modernizing world.

Concentrating on episodes and phenomena that occurred between 1915 and 1950, the contributors describe experiences ranging from those of a transgendered Zapatista soldier to upright damas católicas and Mexico City’s chicas modernas pilloried by the press and male students. Women refashioned their lives by seeking relief from bad marriages through divorce courts and preparing for new employment opportunities through vocational education. Activists ranging from Catholics to Communists mobilized for political and social rights.

- Gillett invokes feminist and psychoanalytic theories in her analysis of Campion's films. She states that Campion revises Laura Mulvey's notion of the male gaze, by subjecting male sexuality to female scrutiny and by attempting to invent the conditions of mutual seeing. For example, Gillett's discussion of In the Cut employs the myths of Medusa and Bluebeard and also Barbara Creed's conception of the monstrous feminine in its discussion of castration. She argues that whereas Malloy is unafraid of female desire, Rodriguez castrates (decapitates) women out of fear of being castrated himself. Although this film scrutinizes male sexuality, Gillett claims that it also provides a different story of female sexual desire.

- Description
- Nina Martin argues that pornography makes a valuable resource for investigating female sexuality and gender construction. In this study she uses erotic thrillers to examine the construction of female desire. The heroines of these productions have overtly sexual adventures, often dabbling in a variety of sex work positions--including call girl, stripper, and exotic dancer--to get in touch with their sexual desires. Martin explains, however, that the films highlight a fundamental tension between endorsing an empowered, sexually experienced female heroine ('the sexy bad girl') and reinforcing more conventional, constructed standards that limit the acceptable forms of feminine sexuality. So while the sexual explicitness of the films acknowledges the increasing appeal of pornography to female heterosexual viewers, erotic thrillers remain couched in romanticized narratives and settings that speak to very traditional understandings of femininity and desire. By analyzing the way the specifics of this hybrid genre have been shaped by pop cultural products targeting women, including soap operas, women's magazines, and talk shows, Sexy Thrills unpacks the construction of female desire to reveal how sex is marketed to heterosexual women.

- Of all the images to arise from the Harlem Renaissance, the most thought-provoking were those of the mulatta. For some writers, artists, and filmmakers, these images provided an alternative to the stereotypes of black womanhood and a challenge to the color line. For others, they represented key aspects of modernity and race coding central to the New Negro Movement. Due to the mulatta's frequent ability to pass for white, she represented a variety of contradictory meanings that often transcended racial, class, and gender boundaries. Portraits of the New Negro Woman investigates the visual and literary images of black femininity that occurred between the two world wars. Sherrard-Johnson traces the origins and popularization of these new representations in the art and literature of the Harlem Renaissance and how they became an ambiguous symbol of racial uplift constraining African American womanhood in the early twentieth century.
