- Description
- This book reconnects the roots of black feminism to contemporary activism in the United States, describing the contributions of the black feminist organization, the Combahee River Collective (CRC). Forty years ago, in 1977, the CRC founders published a statement the so-called Combahee River Collective Statement. One remarkable aspect of this radical collective was its intersectional analysis of the roots of black women's oppression and inequality. In this collection of interviews, founding members of the CRC and contemporary activists - e.g. from #BlackLivesMatter - reflect on the legacy of its contributions to black feminism and its influence on today's struggles.

- Description
- This book traces the development of a Left feminist consciousness as women became more actively involved in the American Left during and immediately following World War II. McDonald argues that women writers on the Left drew on the rhetoric of antifascism to critique the cultural and ideological aspects of women's oppression. The book provides a historical overview of women writers who anticipated issues about women's oppression and the intersections of gender, race, and class that would become central tenants of feminist literary criticism and black feminist criticism in the 1970s and 1980s. It closely considers works by writers both well-known and obscure, including Lorraine Hansberry, Alice Childress, Martha Dodd, Sanora Babb, and Beth McHenry.

- Description
- This volume, synthesizing over 20 years of feminist thinking, presents critiques of mainstream psychological theories and lays the groundwork for the development of a context-based, feminist psychological theory. . .Part I of the volume examines the limitations that underlie traditional views of human nature as well as the consequences of not taking into account the effects of contextual and structural forces upon human development. .The initial chapters utilize feminist analyses of gender, context, and structure to assess the adequacy of the metaphysic in traditional personality theories' assumptions. .Following chapters examine the impact and limits of empiricism as the dominant model of knowledge generation within cognitive-behavioural theories: identify Jung's biases, which are integral to his use of rationalism as an epistemic method: and demonstrate the class and culture biases implicit in personality theories. In essence, the limits and dangers of single-use epistemological approaches are illuminated, and fundamental considerations – 'What is reality and by whom is it defined?' - are posed. . .Part II focuses on traditional views of psychopathology, and provides feminist critiques of its models and conceptualizations. These chapters address current mainstream models of several large categories of psychopathology - depression, schizophrenia, agoraphobia, personality disorders, and trauma - and present feminist revisions for differently understanding these sets of observed behaviours.

- Description
- In this book the authors collect the stories of the women who helped to found and lead the Southern Association for Women Historians during its first twenty years. These women give evidence, in strong and effective language, of the experiences that shaped their entrée into the profession. They vividly describe the point at which they experienced the shift in their lives and in the lives of those around them that led toward a new day for women in the history profession. In the midst of a national movement to end sex discrimination through legislation, to increase women's consciousness-raising efforts, and to acknowledge the economic realities of women in the workforce, these women came together to form an organization that could enable them to have the careers they deserved.

- Description
- This book examines the history of women's bookstores in the US from the 1970s to the 1990s. 'Women's bookstores' refers to bookstores operated by and for women. Such bookstores emerged out of the second women's movement as well as the lesbian and gay rights movement. This book establishes that women's bookstores played an important role in feminism by enabling the dissemination of women's voices and thereby helping to sustain and enrich the women's movement. The crucial step toward the development of women's bookstores started with the first national Women In Print Conference in 1976. As an important part of the feminist publishing community, it gathered strength centered around the periodical Feminist Bookstore News.
