- Description
- Highlighting the frequent pathologization of animal lovers and animal rights activists, this book examines how the “madness” of our relationships with animals intersects with the “madness” of taking animals seriously. The essays in this volume argue that “animaladies” are expressive of political and psychological discontent and the characterization of animal advocacy as mad or “crazy” distracts attention from broader social unease regarding human exploitation of animal life. Allusions to madness are also often gendered, thought to be overly sentimental with an added sense that emotions are being directed at the wrong species.

- Description
- This volume explores issues of black female identity through the various “imaginings” of the black female body in print and visual culture. Offering an exploration of the continuities and discontinuities of subjectivity and agency, this collection reveals black women’s expressivity as a multilayered enterprise, liberating and similarly confining. Thus these representations in art, literature, and culture perform a delicate and challenging dance of redemption—a redemption necessary to flesh out the precarious dynamics of being black and female at the turn of this century.

- Description
- This book investigates meanings associated with female head hair, problematising assumptions about its role and implications in the 21st Century. Authors reflect on the use of hair in popular culture, such as children’s television and pop album artwork, as well as in work by women artists. Studies examine the lived experiences of women from a range of backgrounds and histories, including curly-haired women in Israel, African American women and lesbians in France. Other essays interrogate the connotations of women’s head hair in relation to body image, religion and aging.

The book’s ten contributors, black female scholars from a variety of disciplines, provide a wide range of perspectives, while considering everything from Basketball Wives to Say Yes to the Dress. As regular viewers of reality television, these scholars are able to note ways in which the genre presents positive images of black womanhood, even as they catalog a litany of stereotypes about race, class, and gender that it tends to reinforce
