- Description
- Žarkov analyzes representations of female and male bodies in the Croatian and Serbian press in the late 1980s and in the early 1990s, during the war. She argues that the Balkan war was not a war between ethnic groups, but that ethnicity was produced by the war itself. She argues that both the representational practices of the 'media war' and those of the 'ethnic war' depended on specific notions of femininity and masculinity, (hetero)sexuality and ethnicity.

- Description
- The author examines the principles that guide the creation and dissemination of historically based fictional narratives. Are such representations capable of shaping, changing or depicting 'real' human atrocities? How do existing ideas about gender influence the ways these narratives are written and perceived? Moving beyond fictional accounts that have portrayed the carnage of World War II, the Holocaust and the Vietnam War, the author focuses on emerging narratives about recent abuses, including those in South Africa, Rwanda and Iraq.
