- Description
- 'Author examines the role that the Amsterdam Police Department plays in the context of lesbian domestic violence and the taboos surrounding lesbian domestic violence, perceptions of how the police are handling such cases, and asks who should be initiating discussions. Author look specifically at the way the Amsterdam Police Department networks Roze in Blauw and the Domestic Violence Unit address the reporting and underreporting of abusive cases amongst lesbians. She provides the opinions and insights of police officers, LGBT therapists, researchers, and LGBT community members and analyzes what the Amsterdam Police has done in the past, what they are doing now, and what can be done in the future to address the specific needs of lesbians affected by domestic violence. The police have acknowledged that this is an issue they should be working on, but have not yet found the best way to spread awareness and handle the cases that come in. If Amsterdam can figure out a way to make this subject less taboo and more talked about, perhaps the rest of the Netherlands, Europe, and the world can keep the conversation flowing and break the silence surrounding lesbian domestic violence. - 'Author discusses the antecedents and consequences of identification with feminism. First she defines what a feminist actually is. .More technically, the Oxford dictionary says that a feminist is “A person who supports feminism”, and feminism means “The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities”. There are many definitions of feminism and individuals often define feminism differently. .There are many branches of feminism. Men and women should not be treated as if they are the same because that maintains inequality. Hence, radical feminists challenge social norms and existing social institutions. Other subgroups of feminists call themselves socialist feminists, liberal feminists, lesbian feminists, or Black feminists. Despite their many differences, what all of these branches of feminists have in common is that they are willing to label themselves as a feminist. .Interestingly, some people believe that men and women should be equal, but do not identify as a feminist. Others believe in gender equality based on individual values and self-determination, and therefore call themselves neo-liberals, or egalitarians. .Some people argue that there is more to being a feminist than merely believing that men and women should be equal. For example, being a woman is sometimes seen as a requirement for being a feminist, as is being an activist and actively striving for equal rights. In fact, according to one feminist identity, active engagement in collective action is the final stage of developing a feminist. To conclude, feminism (or feminist) is a multifaceted concept and there is not one definition. In all definitions though there is one corresponding aspect and that is that feminism is about the equality of the sexes.'

- Description
- 'What author wants to work towards in this thesis is a problematization of a kind of relating in terms of recognition and categorization in order to work towards a different mode of relating to what is new and other: a relating that is no longer appropriating or fixing of what it relates to but a relating is characterized by an ‘openness’ towards what is different. The turn to the notion of the unimaginable is a means by which she tries to envision the kind of relating to the new and the other. What is unimaginable cannot be appropriated in familiar terms: the unimaginable can not be explained or described. As soon as we do, it turns into what is imaginable. This is what inspires the different relating towards the new that is proposed in this thesis. In order to provoke a more open and generous approach towards difference, the main question this thesis concentrates on is how to envision a different relating towards the new by means of an ethics of the unimaginable.'

- Description
- Young viewers encounter content in the media that they are not able to distinguish from reality are not confined to sexually explicit internet material. That’s the same case with less explicit, but nonetheless unrealistic, sexual content in more mainstream media such as music videos. For example, in a highly publicized case, rap and hiphop culture and its sexually stereotypical music videos in particular, were said to have inspired 13-year old teenagers to engage in sexual assault. That's why politicians and other critical voices from society requested that young people are taught to put sexual media content in perspective. To know whether such requests are warranted and how they can be addressed, however, we first need to understand whether and how sexual media content affects young people, which young people are affected most and which are not. This dissertation aims to contribute to this understanding.

- 'The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of female sexual offenders and their offending careers. It is well known that there is variation in various aspects of male sexual offending. Researchers have attempted to address this heterogeneity by developing classifications. Such classifications have been based on the age of the victim (child molesters versus rapists), the age of the offender (juvenile versus adult offenders), the presence of any co-offenders (solo-offenders versus co-offenders), whether there was physical contact with the victim (hands-on versus hands-off offenses) and offenders’criminal careers (versatile offenders versus specialized offenders). Such heterogeneity is arguably also present in female, adult, as well as juvenile sexual offenders. '

- Description
- Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Development Studies of the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, The Netherlands. The objective of the thesis is to analyse the post-plantation island Jamaica and it's political economy, which has produced a combination of poverty and violence in the urban areas. Case study is Southside, one of the inner-city communities in capitol Kingston. This study examines the concepts of gender, power and the body that are incorporated into the material and symbolic discourses of domination and resistance. It will also link current manifestations of these political and socio-economic problems to the historical evolution of Jamaica. The thesis tells the story of efforts to improve the lives of disadvantaged and socially excluded citizens, with practices of exchanging sex for materiality and parenting as survival strategies.
