- Description
- The authors revisit women, first interviewed a decade earlier in Pamela Stone’s book 'Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home' about taking a career break of high-level jobs to raise children. They talk about the challenges when they return to work. Most succeed, but not in their former white-collar jobs due to the lack of flexibility in hours, but in lower-paid jobs in the gig economy or predominantly female nonprofit sector. An account of the consequences for women seeking to strike a work/life balance, how women can reinvent their careers, and the policy reforms needed in the upper strata of the labour market where patriarchy and capitalism operates.

- Description
- This book takes a look at the actions and policies of the George W. Bush administration in terms of their impact on women in the United States and abroad. A largely ignored aspect of his presidency, Bush's policies and actions have in many ways reversed or inhibited women's progress over the past three decades. While the media have focused on his opposition to abortion, Bush's less-publicized anti-feminist agenda has in fact been much more extensive. From shutting down women's offices in the government to de-funding programs that assist women, from opposing global women's rights treaties to supporting anti-feminist organizations. The author argues that Bush has opposed women's interests in multiple ways.

- Description
- In these twelve personal connected essays, Emily Bernard (1967) details the experience of growing up black in the south with a family name inherited from a white man, surviving a random stabbing at a New Haven coffee shop, marrying a white man from the North and bringing him home to her family, adopting two children from Ethiopia, and living and teaching in a primarily white New England college town. Each of these essays sets out to discover a new way of talking about race and of telling the truth as the author has lived it.
- Several of these essays appeared in slightly different versions in various journals in the period 2005-2018.

- Coco Fusco offers a look at women's role in the military and at America's use of torture in the War on Terror. The opening essay, 'Invasion of space by a female' takes its title from the term for the authorized military tactic and takes the form of a letter to Virginia Woolf. 'A field guide for female interrogators' guises as a CIA manual. In 'The feminist future' Fusco poses as a visitor from the US Army who, on the occasion of a gathering of preeminent women in the art world, congratulates her peers for their strategic containment of feminism. The book also includes a FBI memo that contains a description of an interrogation involving a female interrogator who made sexual advances as part of her approach to a prisoner.

- Description
- In this book Traister makes sense of a moment in American history that changed the country : the presidential election of 2008. Hillary Clinton’s improbable rise, her fall and her insistence on pushing forward straight through to her remarkable phoenix flight from the race: Sarah Palin’s attempt not only to fill the void left by Clinton, but to alter the very definition of feminism and claim some version of it for conservatives: liberal rapture over Barack Obama and the historic election of the first African-American president: the media microscope trained on Michelle Obama, harsher even than the one Hillary had endured fifteen years earlier. Meanwhile, media women like Katie Couric and Rachel Maddow altered the course of the election. What did all this mean to the millions of people who were glued to their TV sets, and for the country, its history and its future? As Traister sees it, the 2008 election was good for women. The campaign for the presidency reopened some of the most fraught American conversations—about gender, race and generational difference, about sexism on the left and feminism on the right—difficult discussions that had been left unfinished but that are crucial to further perfecting our union. The election was also shaped the perspectives of American women and men from different generations and backgrounds, altering the way that all of us will approach questions of women and power far into the future. When Clinton cried, when Palin reached for her newborn at the end of a vice presidential debate, the whole country was watching women’s history—American history—being made.

The author, drawing on her own experience as an exotic dancer, examines the ways that striptease embodies conflicting notions of race, class, and female sexuality, and how the exotic dance industry deploys these differences to codify and commodify our erotic imagination. With case studies.
