- Description
- While previous studies explored challenges concerning the gendered culture within higher education, less is known about the additional barriers faced by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering en Mathematics) women with children. This study examines the influence motherhood has on STEM womenÔÇÖs perceptions of organisational support, mentoring and networking. Women with children are found to have less opportunity to engage with mentoring or to benefit from formal or informal networks within the institution. The authors suggest review of HR policy and practice to facilitate greater organisational support.

- Description
- This article discusses disability memoirs written by mothers of disabled sons during state socialism in Poland. It recovers an often forgotten experience of living socialism as a mother of a disabled child and analyzes disability as a category of difference that, unlike gender or class, was not reordered by the socialist state. It argues that disability reconfigured motherhood as a political institution under state socialism and shows that a child’s disability permitted women to become politically disobedient subjects. Disability allowed women who were responsible for their children’s overcoming disability to make demands on the state and criticize it for the lack of sufficient accommodations and resources. At the same time, the article highlights the violence embedded in the relationship between a disabled son and his mother.

- Description
- 'This study uses the narratives of six unmarried Dutch women over the age of fifty as a lens through which to critically examine race, ethnicity, class, gender and aging in the context of Amsterdam Zuidoost. Zuidoost (Southeast) is an area of Amsterdam saturated with Dutch immigrants from former colonies, most notably Suriname. Therefore this study critically examines the ways in which the Netherlands’ history of colonialism and slavery come into play in contemporary Zuidoost, in the lives of both autochtonen and allochtonen women. Ultimately no concrete conclusions can be made because of the limiting size of the study, however themes from the stories that women tell in the categories of sexuality and relationships, experiences of race, feelings of belonging in both Zuidoost and Amsterdam, motherhood and menopause are explored through a Dutch post-colonial lens.'

- Description
- This article analyzes the Gulag memoirs of four women political prisonersÔÇöOlga Adamova-Sliozberg, Liudmila Miklashevskaya, Nadezhda Joffe, and Valentina Grigorievna levleva-PavlenkoÔÇöto examine the interplay of motherhood and survival. Each was a mother of small children sentenced to forced labor camps in the northern polar regions of the Soviet Union. Motherhood played a complex role in their survival. The rupture in family relations, particularly the separation from their children, magnified the psychological and emotional stress of their incarceration. Yet, being a mother in the camps provided a compelling motivation to stay alive. It helped them to sustain a sense of normalcy by connecting them to their former lives and to the family unit that represented stability and sustenance amid the bleakness of their Gulag existence.

- Description
- In her paper Jane Cattien takes postmodern and intersectional critiques of feminist standpoint theory as a critical point of departure to re-examine the debate around the relevance of the signifier “women” in feminist epistemology. Her aim is twofold: first, she seeks to shed new light on these criticisms by using the lived experiences of mixedrace women as an innovative lens through which to examine the issue of fragmentation in feminist epistemology. Eleanor Dobson examines the relationship between mummy fiction and the fairy-tale genre in the closing years of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth. Isabella Luta investigates the significance behind this change and explore how myth influenced medicine to tackle the question of why ‘Nymphomania’ became the preferred term for excessive female sexuality in the 19th century. A substantial amount of literature dealing with conceptualisations of the nation has neglected the importance that gender and the politics of reproduction play in the construction of national identities. Analysing images of political campaigns and activists as well as public discourses on motherhood, abortion and childcare, Yvonne Frankfurth will illustrate the importance that gender and sexuality assumed in German nation-building projects before and after its unification in 1990. In her paper Kelly Yin Nga Tse critically examines post/feminist imperatives in relation to neoliberal ethos and class dynamics in The People’s Republic of Desire by transnational Chinese women writer, Annie Wang. While what comprises “feminist research methods” is subject to debate, research with a feminist orientation is often characterised by heightened reflexivity and a recognition of the subjective nature of knowledge claims. By drawing upon ethnographic research conducted among young people in post-apartheid South Africa, Fawzia Haeri Mazanderani interrogates the potential value of audio recordings or “voice notes” during fieldwork, in conjunction with the more traditional form of the fieldwork diary.

- kinderloosheid, moederschap, kinderkeuze, Nederland, 2010-2019, 21e eeuw, onderzoek
- Description
- 'The purpose of Kinderloosheid: (In)voluntarily Childless Women in Dutch Society was to examine how Dutch women, particularly those without children interact with norms of motherhood in the Netherlands. I conducted five interviews, two with voluntarily childless women and three with involuntarily childless women. From the information gathered through these conversations, which ranged in topic from early family life to current relationships to experiences of childlessness, I grouped together major trends and came to several conclusions. First, that childlessness violates a strong Dutch social norm, causing various effects of social exclusion. Second, that women deal with their childlessness in several primarily social coping behaviors. Finally, that the motivations behind wanting or not wanting to have children are also social in nature. This research would provide backing for support group structures and for activism in support of spreading awareness about childlessness.'
