- Description
- Banned in public institutions in France and Turkey, mandatory in Saudi Arabia and Iran, no other item of clothing incites such furious reactions. The Islamic veil – a catch-all term that encompasses everything from a simple headscarf to the all-covering burqa – has, over the past decade, become a heated battleground for debates on everything from women’s rights to multiculturalism. Elizabeth Bucar goes beyond the simplistic question of whether the veil is “good” or “bad” to ask instead why it has become so politically symbolic. Cutting through the condescension and fear that typify the debate, she reveals the huge diversity of women’s experiences of veiling.

- This book maps the origins of the concept of intersectionality, particularly in Black feminist thought and sociology, opens the discourse to challenges and applications across disciplines and outside academia, and explores the leading edges of scholarship to reveal important new directions for inquiry and activism. Charting the development of intersectionality as an intellectual and political movement, Grzanka brings together both foundational readings and emerging classics.

- Description
- 'This report presents the analysis of survey research conducted in Nepal in the fall of 2013. First, a description of the survey design and data collection processes concerning the groups of people who might identify as sexual or gender minorities, and present analysis of the responses. .Then a demographic overview of a sample, with special attention to the identity, behaviour, and attraction elements of respondents reported. After that an examination of an important inflection point for LGBTI rights advocacy in Nepal – the provision of citizenship certificates listing a third gender option. .Also authors analyze key socio-economic indicators in the sample – including literacy and living situation, and educational attainment and enrollment. Authors then examine data collected about respondents’ relationships and discuss some of the reasons the sample may differ so drastically from what national data sets show, including potential ways to improve data collection on this subject in future studies. .At the end authors analyze data regarding access to HIV services, including knowledge of HIV, HIV testing behaviours and, for people living with HIV, sero status disclosure patterns, some treatment behaviours, and xperiences of HIV-related discrimination.'

- Description
- This book gathers together contributions by experts in various fields – including law, sociology, philosophy and anthropology – to pin down the relationship between institutions and the gender binary. Centrally, it examines the way in which the present-day gender binary is shored up by the conceptualization and regulation of sex and gender at societal and institutional levels.

- Description
- In these essays, Grosz demonstrates how imagining different relations between the past, present, and future alters understandings of social and scientific projects ranging from theories of justice to evolutionary biology, and she explores the radical implications of the reordering of these projects for feminist, queer, and critical race theories. .Grosz’s reflections on how rethinking time might generate new understandings of nature, culture, subjectivity, and politics are wide-ranging. She moves from a compelling argument that Charles Darwin’s notion of biological and cultural evolution can potentially benefit feminist, queer, and antiracist agendas to an exploration of modern jurisprudence’s reliance on the notion that justice is only immanent in the future and thus is always beyond reach.
