- Description
- Talking back and acting out is a collection of writing by women who actively negotiate, reconstruct, and re-imagine their identities in opposition to dominant cultural constructions. The collection explores individual women's refusal to be reduced to hegemonic constructions, prescribed identities, and limited possibilities. The essays highlight stories of women who push the boundaries of what it means to be a woman in this multicultural, yet white supremacist, society.

- Description

- Description
- The relationship between bodies and images has long occupied feminism. This book explores the way in which this relationship has primarily been approached and offers an alternative framework for analysis. Coleman moves from a consideration of media images, the focus of much feminist research, to examine images more widely: as mirrors, photographs, glimpses, comments, imagination. Addressing issues of appearance and selfhood, sex and gender, and temporality, the book takes a Deleuzian position to argue that bodies and images are not separable entities, but rather entangled processes of becoming. It asks the question: how do bodies become through images?

- Description
- This book is an ethnography of class dynamics and the subject formation of migrant domestic workers. Based on interviews with young women who migrated from China's Anhui province to the city of Beijing to undertake domestic service for middle-class families Hairong explores what these migrant domestic workers mean to the families that hire them, to urban economies, to rural provinces such as Anhui, and to the Chinese state. Above all, Yan focuses on the domestic worker's self-conceptions, desires, and struggles. Yan analyzes how the migrant women workers are subjected to, make sense of, and reflect on a range of state and neoliberal discourses about development, modernity, consumption, self-worth, quality, and individual and collective longing and struggle. She offers insight into the workers' desire and efforts to achieve quality through self-improvement, the way the workers are treated by their employers, and representations of migrant domestic workers on television and the Internet and in newspapers and magazines.

- Description
- Brown examines how African American women since the 1970s have found ways to move beyond the 'double consciousness' of the colonized text to develop a healthy subjectivity that attempts to disassociate black subjectivity from its connection to white culture. Brown traces the emergence of this new consciousness from its roots in the Black Aesthetic Movement through important milestones such as the anthology The Black Woman and Essence magazine to the writings of Angela Davis, Toni Cade Bambara, and Jayne Cortez.

- Description
- The main goal of this study is to consider how the relations between gender, diaspora and youth culture are digitally articulated by Moroccan-Dutch youths between the age of 12 and 18 years old. Combining new media, gender and postcolonial theory, the researcher carried out a transdisciplinary analysis of a young ethnic-minority population whose contribution to digital culture is still undertheorized. In particular he explored how Moroccan-Dutch youths participate in and appropriate digital spaces in order to convey their belongings across multiple axes of identification such as gender, sexuality, diaspora, religion and youth-culture.
