- Description
- Exploring the application of quotas and affirmative action at an institutional or organizational level from different perspectives, the contributions inthis book provide an understanding of the complexity and controversial nature of policies and actions in different countries. Focussing particularly on gender-related initiatives, but raising questions pertinent to other aspects of diversity, the contributions from international researchers investigate variances between and differing justifications for policies. Mijntje Lückerath writes about the feasibility of the Dutch quota bill.

- Description
- This book examines political participation, representation and legitimacy in the national parliaments of European Union countries. The book is organised around three major questions: what affects the presence of women in parliament?: does the number of women in parliament have an effect?: and are women in parliament representing women? A surprising result of the research is that relatively small groups of women can influence various aspects of the legislative process. Diaz researched different electoral systems, and concludes that the level of proportionality of the system influences the extent to which parliament and assemblies mirror their polulations, both socially and ideologically.

- Description
- In Scandinavia, women's law was established as a distinct legal discipline in university teaching and legal scholarship in the mid 1970s. Scandinavian women's law has been mainstreamed into the general development of European law on gender equality and discrimination. Scandinavian women's law - as developed through the last 40 years - and EU gender equality law are thus contemporaries. Because of the direct effect and supremacy of EU law over national law, the interplay between elements of law stemming from the EU-level and from the national level has been particularly important in the Nordic EU-Member States - Denmark, Sweden and Finland (Norway is not a Member).

- Description
- This book focuses on gender issues to tackle important questions such as: What are women and men symbols of and how is gender constructed in policy discourse? It studies what functions symbolic representation fulfils in the construction of gender, what social roles get legitimized in policy discourse, and how this affects power constellations. The authors draw on theories of symbolic representation and gender, as well as primary material about political debates on labour and care issues, partnership and reproductive rights, gender violence, and quotas. The authors show that reconsidering symbolic representation from a discursive perspective makes explicit issues of (in)equality embedded within particular constructions, as well as their consequences for political representation and gender equality.

- Description
- In recent years, several countries have adopted measures such as candidate gender quotas to increase women's presence in electoral politics. France adopted gender parity reforms - laws to ensure equal access to elected office for women and men - in 1999 and 2000. Have these reforms had a positive effect on women's political representation? In this book, Jocelyne Praud and Sandrine Dauphin answer this question by tracing the evolution of France's gender parity reforms, from their historical roots to their recent extension beyond the electoral sphere. They combine analysis of women's historical struggle to acquire and exercise political rights, interviews with parity advocates and opponents, and translations of key European and French legal documents.Although parity reforms have not dramatically boosted women's representation in the National Assembly, this book reveals that they have set in motion a process of feminization in the electoral sphere that bodes well for the future of parity democracy.

- Description
- The author addresses key themes that have emerged in politics in post-colonial states: nationalism and its developmental framing of gender relations: the debates on the post-colonial state among feminists: policy agencies that have become the state's answer to women's struggles for political and economic inclusion: democratization of the state and the implications for the refashioning of gender and power relations: practical problem-solving through quotas for women in representative politics and the limits to such an approach to political equality. She describes how women have engaged with institutions of governance in developing countries, looking in particular at political participation, deliberative democracy, representation, leadership and state feminism. She also examines the governance of the regimes of production, consumption and exchange from the last three decades by focussing on an analysis of the Trade Related Intellectual Property (TRIPS) regime and how governance of global regimes of production affects the ways in which inequalities are being reproduced.

- Description
- Gender quotas are a controversial policy measure. However, over the past twenty years they have been widely adopted around the world and especially in Europe. They are now used in politics, corporate boards, state and local public administration and even in civil society organizations. This book explores this phenomenon, providing a comparative perspective on gender quotas' adoption across thirteen European countries (Belgium, France, Slovenia, Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Germany, Austria, Norwege, Sweden, and Denmark). It also studies resistance to gender quotas by political parties and supreme courts.
