- Description

- Description
- The author examines the question of how women of color experience feminism, and how race and socioeconomics can alter this experience. She discusses the intersectional nature of being a woman of color and a feminist, based on profiles of historical women of color (including Hottentot Venus, Josefa Loaiza, and Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash) and also by reflecting on her own experiences in academia. The topics include sexuality, social movements and activism, violence, reproductive rights, popular culture, identities and love.

- Description
- Des Jardins explores the work of a wide variety of women historians, both professional and amateur, white and nonwhite. These historians addressed new questions and represented social groups traditionally omitted from the historical record, such as workers, African Americans, Native Americans, and religious minorities. Assessing the historical contributions of Mary Ritter Beard, Zora Neale Hurston, Angie Debo, Mari Sandoz, Lucy Salmon, Mary McLeod Bethune, Dorothy Porter, Nellie Neilson and many others, Des Jardins argues that women working within the confines of the historical enterprise collectively brought the new perspectives of social and cultural history to the study of a multifaceted American past.

- Description
- This book is a collection of Lorde's non-fiction prose, written between 1976 and 1990, and it introduces new perspectives on the depth and range of her intellectual interests and her commitments to progressive social change. Presented here is a major body of Lorde's speeches and essays, along with the complete text of A Burst of Light and Lorde's landmark prose works Sister Outsider and The Cancer Journals. Together, these writings reveal Lorde's commitment to a radical course of thought and action, situating her works within the women's, gay and lesbian, and African American Civil Rights movements. They also place her within a continuum of black feminists, from Sojourner Truth, to Anna Julia Cooper, Amy Jacques Garvey, Lorraine Hansberry, and Patricia Hill Collins. I Am Your Sister concludes with personal reflections from Alice Walker, Gloria Joseph, Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, and bell hooks on Lorde's political and social commitments and the indelibility of her writings for all who are committed to a more equitable society.

- Description
- In this book the author reviews the history of black feminism through analysis of plays by Pearl Cleage, Glenda Dickerson, Breena Clarke, Kia Corthron, Suzan-Lori Parks, Sharon Bridgforth, and Shirlene Holmes. The book represents a cross section of women who have diverse writing and performance styles and generational differences that highlight the artistic and political breadth of black feminist theater. Anderson closely investigates each play’s construction and the context of its production, including how the play critiques, shifts, or alters dominant culture stereotypes: how it positions goals of the “community”: and how it engages with the concept of art’s function. She not only discusses what shapes the black feminism of these writers but also points out how the meaning of the term black feminism shifts among them.
