- Description
- In this anniversary edition to celebrate the 35th jubilee of LOVA the focus is on etnographies of gender and the body. Irma Beusink presented a paper at he LOVA conference in Amsterdam, July 2014, using metaphors to analyze differences within feminisms and their translations into the governmental policies and political statements of indigenous women's organizations in Bolivia. Breast cancer is the second most frequent cancer in the world and a mastectomy is the main method of treatment. Mastectomized women must reconstruct the way that they express their femininity and the symbols that identify them. In El Salvador significant changes in social life have occurred due to the levels of violence that the maras, or transnational street gangs, have generated. How adolescent women living in mara-controlled territories associate themselves with the maras and how their associations impact their sexuality and life strategy choices are discussed by Edith Yesenia Pena Sánches en Mónica Paola Zúniga Escobar. Authors describe the corporeality of an ethnographic view of morbid obesity, technoscience and identity by analyzing the story of a woman with morbid obesity in Mexico City. Anorexia nervosa as a health problem shows a prevalence of 0.5 to 5% in Mexico and it is mainly shown in adolescent and young adult women. In his paper Matthew W Maycock shows certain forms of competition and the denial of pain, both of which are integral to being rickshaw drivers, in light of their implications for masculine bodies and performances. The last 10 years has seen an increase in traditional bride abduction (ukuthwala) cases in South Africa. Recent cases share the common element of sexual violence of under-aged girls by much older men, or even groups of men. Diana Dubrovska takes a look at female sex tourism in the Caribbean and Latin America. In her paper Heather Tucker considers the contemporary Euro-American and European interests and outrage over the 'barbarity' of anti-homosexuality legislation in countries in Africa. Ourania Tsiakalou pays attention to the massive detentions of trans women that took place in Greece as well as some other instances of transphobia, as it was presented in the media and in the public sphere.

- Description
- Talking back and acting out is a collection of writing by women who actively negotiate, reconstruct, and re-imagine their identities in opposition to dominant cultural constructions. The collection explores individual women's refusal to be reduced to hegemonic constructions, prescribed identities, and limited possibilities. The essays highlight stories of women who push the boundaries of what it means to be a woman in this multicultural, yet white supremacist, society.

- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- Description
- Themes of embodiment and agency have long been central to feminist philosophical thought and have increasingly led feminists to extend their theorizing to encompass a range of identities shaped by processes of gender, race, class, disability, and sexuality. The intersection of these themes, however, has often been limited to analyzing how specific modes of socialized embodiment can be impediments to agency or autonomy. .This book brings together a range of theoretical perspectives and resources to the project in ways that stress possibilities as well as constraints. Contributors utilize phenomenology, psychoanalysis, care ethics, analytic philosophy, Hegelian critique, and postcolonial theory to examine embodiment and agency in contexts ranging from a child's struggle to find her own identity to global politics. Part I of this book explores how we become individually and collectively identified subjects through the possibilities for agency that arise from specific modes of embodiment. Part II continues the theme of embodied agency in contemporary sociopolitical contexts. It reconceptualizes the links between embodiment and moral agency in ways adequate to political realities, personal relationships, and collective responsibilities.

- Description
- The women who launched the radical second wave of the feminist movement believed in universal sisterhood and color-blind democracy. Their hopes, however, were soon dashed. To this day, the failure to create an .integrated movement remains a sensitive and contested issue. In this book Winifred Breines explores why a racially integrated women's liberation movement did not develop in the United States. .Drawing on flyers, letters, newspapers, journals, institutional records, and oral histories, Breines dissects how white and black women's participation in the movements of the 1960s led to the development of separate feminisms. Herself a participant in these events, Breines attempts to reconcile the explicit professions of anti-racism by white feminists with the accusations of mistreatment, ignorance, and neglect by African American feminists. Many radical white women, unable to see beyond their own experiences and idealism, often behaved in unconsciously or abstractly racist ways, despite their passionately anti-racist stance and hard work to develop an interracial movement. As Breines argues, however, white feminists' racism is not the only reason for the absence of an interracial feminist movement. Segregation, black women's interest in the Black Power movement, class differences, and the development of identity politics with an emphasis on 'difference' were all powerful factors that divided white and black women. By the late 1970s and early 1980s white feminists began to understand black feminism's call to include race and class in gender analyses, and black feminists began to give white feminists some credit for their political work. Despite early setbacks, white and black radical feminists eventually developed cross-racial feminist political projects.
