- Description
- In this book David Stamos wants to question whether and to what extent evolutionary biology shines light on the big questions debated in the humanities and social sciences. The main theme in the book is the debate between evolutionary explanations and what has come to be known as the Standard Social Science Model. This model is a way of looking at human nature that is commonly found in sociology, behaviorism in psychology, cultural anthropology, Marxism, women's studies, and gay studies. Stamos examines topics of race, sex, gender, the nature of language, religion, ethics, knowledge, consciousness and ultimately, the meaning of life from different perspectives.

- Description
- What kind of challenge does sexual and racial difference pose for postmodern ethics? What is the relation between ethical obligation and feminist interpretations of embodiment, passion, and eros? Ziarek argues we cannot address such questions, without putting into dialogue discourses that have hitherto been segregated: postmodern ethics, feminism, race theory, and the idea of radical democracy. Addressing diverse thinkers—including Emmanuel Levinas, Patricia Williams, Jean-François Lyotard, bell hooks, Michel Foucault, Frantz Fanon, Julia Kristeva, and Luce Irigaray—the author proposes a new conception of ethics, an ethics of dissensus that rethinks the relation between freedom and obligation in a double context of embodiment and antagonism.

- Description
- In this work Marty Kheel offers an ecofeminist perspective on nature ethics. She argues that the influential nature theorists whose work se examines represent a masculinist orientation that devalues concern for individual animals. Drawing on feminist theories, such as an ethic of care, inspired by educational psychologist Casrol Gilligan she seeks to heal the divisions among movements and philosophies of feminism, animal advocacy, environmental ethics and holistic health .

- Description
- This collection aims to think critically about agency and explore the relationship between agency and coercion in greater depth. In academic, activist, and policy circles alike, feminist work has re-focused attention onto women as agents rather than as passive victims of overwhelming structures of male institutional power, or less capable of exercising agency by virtue of their class, race, gender or culture. How does bringing agency and coercion into closer interplay impact our understanding of the two? How might the stories of feminist agency change if we locate agency and coercion on the same intellectual frame? What would it mean to disrupt the existing constellation of ideas accompanying agency so as to include coercion, subordination and oppression alongside ideas of freedom, autonomy, and independence? How do we theoretically negotiate agency and coercion in conditions of deep inequality?

- Description
- This book offers a detailed analysis of Beauvoir's concepts of freedom and recognition concerning their impact on a philosophy of gender. It demonstrates that Beauvoir is much more than a simple equality feminist and that she posed questions that are at the center of contemporary feminist research. It shows that Beauvoir's existentialist approach must be taken seriously in that it provides a fundamental instrument for the interpretation of gender relations. On the basis of her work the conflicts are revealed that arise when modern emancipation theories and post-modern deconstructivism clash. By investigating these conflicting tendencies the thesis is elaborated that Beauvoirs's work can be seen as a pivot between modern and post-modern discourse.

- Description
- This publication considers the ontological presuppositions of feminist theories of sexual difference and brings them into conversation with phenomenological, ontological accounts of erotic experience. By inquiring into various types of analyzes of sexual oppression and different accounts of ethics of Eros, this book invites the reader to deepen their existential reflection on the significance of Eros for human life in general, and for political subjectivity in particular.
