- Description
- This book focuses on data available about actual trends in girls’ uses of violence, the scholars here find that by virtually any measure, incidents of girls’ violence are going down, not up. Additionally, rather than attributing girls’ violence to personality or to girls becoming “more like boys,” the contributors examine the contexts that produce violence in girls, demonstrating how addressing the unique problems that confront girls in dating relationships, families, school hallways and classrooms, and in distressed urban neighborhoods can help reduce girls’ use of violence.

- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- Description
- Cecily Devereux reconsiders the extent to which McClung's enduring legacy of crusading for women's rights is founded on the ideas of British eugenicists such as Francis Galton and Caleb Saleeby and implicated in the passage of eugenical legislation in Canada. In a critical study of Painted Fires, the Pearlie Watson books, and several short stories, Devereux attempts to understand McClung's fiction in terms of its engagement with a politics of 'race' and nation and constructions of specifically 'racial' impurities that many women saw themselves as uniquely able to 'cure.'

- Description
- This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to an aspect of Gothic texts, films, and music: that of rewriting. From the eighteenth-century Gothic novel to present-day vampire films and Goth music, the genre is characterised by its nostalgic reflection on past worlds, narratives, and identities. Gothic nostalgia is often accompanied by a transgressive drive, resulting in perversions of the rewritten past—the modern vampire is no longer embodied evil but an attractive dandy, while Goth subcultures reflect on Victorian aesthetics but pervert them by adding fetishist elements. This book brings together the early Gothic novel, present-day female and black Gothic literature, Goth subculture and music, and the imagery of horror films and comic books, thus broadening the definition of ‘Gothic’ from a literary genre to a gesture of pervasive cultural criticism.

- Description
- In the early 1970s, the International Feminist Collective began to organise around the call for recognition of the different forms of labour performed by women. - Description
- Davis takes readers behind the scenes of two hundred years’ worth of conflicts over the existence, separation, and equity of gendered public restrooms, documenting at each step how bathrooms have been entangled with bigger cultural matters: the importance of the public good, the reach of institutional inclusion, the nature of gender difference, and the myriad privileges of social status. Chronicling the debut of nineteenth-century “comfort stations,” twentieth-century mandates requiring equal-but-separate men’s and women’s rooms, and twenty-first-century uproar over laws like North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” Davis reveals how public restrooms are far from marginal or unimportant social spaces.
