- Description
- This book provides a survey of women in Muslim, Jewish and Christian communities in the Middle East during the last two centuries. The authors consider women's defined roles within these religious communities, as well as exploring how women themselves develop and apply their own strategies within religious societies. The accounts draw on case studies from Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon .The authors challenge our understanding of patriarchy to offer a more nuanced account. Taking a balanced look at the issues of religion, gender and change in the Middle East, this interdisciplinary study gives insight to the theme of women and religion in the Middle East.

- Description
- This book argues that three million years of peace, a period when women’s status in society was much higher than it is now, preceded the last 6,000 years of war during which men have come to hold power over women. The book challenges the idea accepted in academia that history is a linear development in which society is steadily moving out of a violent and patriarchal past to a more equitable and peaceful future, and it reexamines both the archaeological work of Marjia Gimbutas and recent research into the prehistories of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia and Oceania.

- Description
- In this publication the author takes the reader on a tour of how self-identity developed throughout history and what individualism means for Muslim societies struggling to maintain a sense of honor in a globalized twenty-first century. He analyzes the connection between tribal patriarchy and Muslim radicalism through the tribal patriarchy index. This index helps to illuminate why women's sexuality, dress, and image so compel militant Muslim outrage and sometimes violent action.

- Description
- Addressing the co-optation of feminist analysis by the state, the discursive constitution of gender and violence, the location of violence in relations of production and reproduction as weaving this together with contemporary critical masculinity studies, Pease shows that men’s violence against women needs to be understood in the context of other forms of men’s violence, including violence against boys and other men, the involvement of men in wars and conflict between nations, and men’s ecologically destructive practices which constitute a form of slow violence.
