- Description
- This volume reflects the potential of a new perspective that allows for a more adequate analysis of transnational activities, by looking at the lives and work of women’s activists in informal border-crossings, ephemeral NGOs, the lower management of established international organizations, and other global networks. By pointing out cultural hierarchies, the vicissitudes of translation and re-interpretation, and the ambiguity of intercultural exchange, this volume demonstrates the potential of transnational history. Chapter 1. Understanding international feminisms as ‘transnational’ – an anachronism? May Wright Sewall and the creation of the International Council of Women, 1889 to 1904 / Karen Offen: Chapter 2. A forgotten instance of women’s international organizing. The transnational feminist networks of the Women’s Progressive Society (1890) and the International Women’s Union (1893–1898) / Julie Carlier: Chapter 3. The national councils of women in France, Italy and Portugal. Comparisons and entanglements 1888-1939 / Anne Cova: Chapter 4. A struggle over gender, class and the vote: unequal international interactions and the formation of the ‘female International’ of socialist women (1905-1907) / Susan Zimmermann: Chapter 5. How did women use the vote? Women and transnational politics in the twentieth century / Pat Thane: Chapter 6. A transnational career? The republican and utopian politics of Frances Wright (1795–1852) / Jane Rendall: Chapter 7. What is a transnational life? Some thoughts about Marguerite Thibert’s career and life (1886–1982) Françoise Thébaud: Chapter 8. Between nationalism and cosmopolitism: female opera singers in Britain and Germany in the first half of the nineteenth century / Gunilla Budde: Chapter 9. Gender, class, race and sexuality: A transnational approach to legislation on venereal diseases, 1880s–1940s / Ida Blom: Chapter 10. Transgressing the colour line. Policing colonial ‘miscegenation’ / Birthe Kundrus: Chapter 11. Sex drives, bride prices and divorces: Legal policy concerning gender relations in German Cameroon 1884–1916 / Ulrike Schaper

- Description
- Focusing on political movements and cultural practices in different global locations the contributors to this book articulate an understanding of the role of vulnerability in practices of resistance. They consider how vulnerability is constructed, invoked, and mobilized within neoliberal discourse, the politics of war, resistance to authoritarian and securitarian power, in LGBTQI struggles, and in the resistance to occupation and colonial violence

- Description
- The author uses masochism as a lens to examine how power structures race, gender, and embodiment in different contexts. Musser employs masochism as a tool for probing relationships between power and subjectivity. Engaging with a range of debates about lesbian S&M, racialization, femininity, and disability, as well as key texts such as Sacher-Masoch’s Venus in Furs, Pauline Réage’s The Story of O, and Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality, Musser renders legible the complex ways that masochism has been taken up by queer, feminist, and critical race theories. Furthering queer theory’s investment in affect and materiality, she proposes “sensation” as an analytical tool for illustrating what it feels like to be embedded in structures of domination such as patriarchy, colonialism, and racism and what it means to embody femininity, blackness, and pain.

- Description
- In the 1970s, often to the consternation of parents and siblings, some progressive young Arab women voluntarily donned the veil. The movement, which rapidly expanded and continues to gather momentum, has sparked controversy within Islamic culture, as well as reactions ranging from perplexity to outrage from those outside it. Western feminist commentators have been particularly vociferous in decrying the veil, which they glibly interpret as a concrete manifestation of patriarchal oppression. However, says El Guindi, most Western observers fail to realize that veiling, which has a long and complex history, has been embraced by many Arab women as both an affirmation of cultural identity and a strident feminist statement. Not only does the veil de-marginalize women in society, but it also represents an expression of liberation from colonial legacies. By voluntarily removing themselves from the male gaze, these women assert their allegiance to a rich and varied tradition, and at the same time preserve their sexual identity.

- Description
- Debates about and insurgencies against female circumcision are symptoms of a disease emanating from a mindset that produced hierarchies of humans, conquered colonies, and built empires. The mindset finds its articulation at points of coalescence. Female circumcision provided a point of coalescence and impetus for the articulation. Insisting that the hierarchy on which the imperialist project rests is not bipolar but multi-layered and more complex, the contributions show how imperialist discourses complicate issues of gender, race, and history. Nnaemeka gives voice to the silenced and marginalized, and creates space for them to participate in knowledge construction and theory making.

- Description
- This book traces the history of contraception use and population management in colonial India, while illuminating its connection to contemporary debates in India and birth control movements in Great Britain and the United States. Ahluwalia draws attention to the interactive and relational history of Indian birth control by including western activists such as Margaret Sanger and Marie Stopes alongside important Indian campaigners. In revealing the elitist politics of middle-class feminists, Indian nationalists, western activists, colonial authorities and the medical establishment, Ahluwalia finds similatities between these groups in rationalizing procreation and regulating women while invoking competing notions of freedom, femininity, and family.
